About DIM TIM
Excerpt from an email to Jacob Lillemose, July 2011:
DIM TIM is the first real breakthrough figure I ever "invented" - back in 1983 - a little cyclops in a battleground scene from the 18th century (American Revolution, Bunker HIll, to be exact) etched into the wet ink on a tee shirt silk screening mount board. That's I think the moment I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Since then, the cyclops has been weaving in and out of my paintings, appearing like an apparition. Finally in 2008, he re-emerged in a major way. I was rebooting in the context of my MFA course. After 25 years of artist life, I ended up among other things, in the painting going in some visceral ways back to the beginning, and there was the cyclops. He became the central dimensional persona in the paintings between 2006-10. A good selection, pre-NYC, is here: http://artforhumans.com/ILUM/pages/frontpage.html I also inserted him into much of the digital work, including animations. A narrative began to congeal in the course of doing MBA-arts/MGT courses and the EGS doctoral studies. Although this is only slowly crystallizing, DIM TIM developed as a complex persona, a representation of the antidote for the artificial personhood of the corporation. I am convinced that the young Lady Gaga trolled my websites and discovered her "monster" thingie. :) You might recall all the Murakami-pushed/manga-derived/
pac-manesque monstery gooey cute kid-crap that suffused contemporary art business for a year or two before the Crash of 07. Cyclops reappeared as an antidote to that, too. Also as a Golem, in the Jewish, not LoTR tradition...... http://youtu.be/CpSNlqtIuaQ Anyhoo, as you probably can see already, DIM TIM became the dimensional embodiment ultimately of a 1000 scans and themes and evaluations, and most importantly a kind of sentient creation for/or/in itself, in the Hegelian sense. As I delved again deeply into philosophy, into realms where the homunculus lurks, the nyad, the geistes, and the other fanciful constructs the thinkers have invented over the centuries for their proofs, and layered in comix, which is where I started myself, as a child, for references, and the cinema's cartoon, and Bruegel and so much more, DIM TIM has become richer and deeper for me. Now, he is named (as the result of an accident, a TYPO, in abbreviating Dimensional Time for a Header), and since we started using a surveillance camera for his eye, and Shane is performing DIM TIM, he is moving closer to a full realization. I have been trying to find the right 3D animator to translate him into that space for a while. Now, in the Dimensional Time series of paintings for the Silvershed show, DIM TIM is the signer of my paintings. HE is the artist. In some structural ways, I am mimicking the operations of someone"" like Bloomberg, who is .com/.gov/.org, a media network, a mayor, a robber baron capitalist, just a pooping guy, a charitable foundation/philanthropist, etc...etc.. I think I'll stop there.. obviously DIM TIM has a LOT going ON! :)
“While the guns rumbled in the distance, we sang, painted, made collages, and wrote poems with all our might.”
— Jean Arp, as quoted by Harold Rosenberg in The De-Definition of Art
4D Art is the system, proven and proof method, and phenomenology through which art - painting and sculpture - is situated in the contextual rhizome (political, commercial and social topology) in which it actually exists anyway, now. Art so situated is therefore presented in itself, for itself, for us, exactly as it is, which helps us perceive our circumstances for what they are. What we do with that data, is up to each us and all of us, measurably, if not predictably.
- Paul McLean, Bushwick, 2011
“This new ideology has elicited a veritable earthquake, a landslide, in the old artistic system. We designate the totality of relevant artistic phenomena by the term “Dimensionism.” (The formula “N + 1″ expresses the Dimensionist development of the arts…”
From the Dimensionist Manifesto, Charles Sirato, Paris, 1936
