Chain letters were around before the internet, and while they may seem harmless enough they have a darker side. They have been used to con people out of money, to send viruses or track users, and of course they clog up the systems of communication that we all rely on, with meaningless crap.
These things all suck, but Iâd like to also add another problem to the list. People with some forms of mental illness can feel compelled to repost or comply with the demands of these images and posts, even when theyâd rather not. This can have many different causes- the magical thinking of shcizophrenia, the compulsions of OCD, the fears and general concern of GAD or other anxiety disorders- but they all have the same result. Someone who knows that something is bullshit is basically forced to comply with it anyway.
Therefore, this page is dedicated to reinventing the chain-letter image and defusing its power. If you find yourself compelled to repost an image like this, do whatever you must do to jinx it. Use whatever sort of juju you find pertinent, to neutralize its threats or promises and make them mundane, and worthless. If that juju is just the act of writing the text to do it, thatâs enough too!
Then add that the new requirement is NOT to repost or interact with the post- that simply SEEING IT neutralizes the threat or attains the reward. Make the text promises or threats as banal and commonplace as possible. Take the force out of the things.
If you are unable to do that yourself, feel free to submit to us, and we will do the juju FOR YOU. It will count as ârepostingâ, as âforwardingâ the image- IT WILL COUNT. If you feel compelled to repost or interact with the image, you can use our submit box to cope with that, without reposting to your own page.
