Hello everyone, it’s been a long time since we’ve talked about The Whit-Noise Podcast hasn’t it? Well that’s mostly been my fault and I wanted to start by apologizing for that. I’ve been going through a lot and I have let that a lot control me for far too long. Now I said that once before but that just goes to show how much I let it control me. However this time it is diferent and I am doing my…
imagine writing your book, and it becomes someone’s favorite book.
imagine what it must be like knowing that this thing you spent hours of your life creating has brought so much joy to someone that they title it their favorite.
This bears repeating because I continue to forget about it.
Your first draft doesn’t have to be good.
It’s allowed to just be bad. It’s allowed to just be the intermediate step of getting the words from your brain into the world in some tangible way that you can build from. It’s allowed to have notes that say “fix this” or “idk man come up with something” or “needs transition” or “put in better order”.
Your first draft is allowed to be a first draft.
I spend too much time thinking my first attempt at anything needs to be perfect when that is completely not the case and the entire thing holding me back.
I need to go easier on myself, on my writing. I need to get over it not being perfect the first time and just be happy that it’s out there in the first place.
I’m writing, that should be what matters. Not how good quality it is or how little needs to be fixed later on. That’s a problem for future me. Present me just needs to worry about getting the words down.
Once more, with feeling:
Your first draft can suck and it’s not the end of the world.
I have recently discovered the joy of podcasts, particularly those centering around a serialized fictional narrative. The ones I like the most are primarily within the science fiction and horror genres, including:
The Black Tapes
Tanis
Rabbits
The Bright Sessions
Ars Paradoxica
Small Town Horror
Paralyzed
Archive 81
And for less committal listening:
Welcome to Night Vale
Within the Wires
Lore
Astonishing Legends
I am ALWAYS looking for new podcasts to listen to, so if anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!
When I launched The Bright Sessions in 2015, there were only a handful of audio dramas compared to non-fiction podcasts. Now there are new ones coming out every day! We are truly in the new Golden Age of audio fiction and I couldn’t be happier. Here’s just a smattering of shows I really love.
If you’re new to audio drama:
Welcome to Night Vale and all of Night Vale Presents shows (Alice Isn’t Dead, Within the Wires, Orbiting Human Circus (of the air)) - WTNV is responsible for so much of the AD renaissance and that’s because it’s amazing.
The Thrilling Adventure Hour - a live variety show with a stellar cast. Another classic.
The Black Tapes Podcast - spooky and compelling
Limetown - an amazing mystery; genuinely scary at times
If you’re looking for character drama:
Wolf 359 - space dramedy that will pull you in with antics and then stab you in the heart with feels
The Far Meridian - dreamy, magic realism with so much heart
Steal the Stars - noir scifi romance that keeps you on the edge of your seat
36 Questions - a musical about the lies we tell the people we love
If you’re looking for plot to sink your teeth into:
ars Paradoxica - time travel and intrigue set in the Cold War
Archive 81- spooky found footage and an adorable rat!
The Message - aliens and government conspiracies
If you’re looking for laughs:
Deck the Halls - rom com shenanigans
Startripper!! - intergalactic hijinks
Hello from the Magic Tavern - improvised podcast in the magical land of Foon
Wooden Overcoats - British sitcom about rival funeral homes on a tiny island
And this is just the tip of the iceberg!! What are some of your favorite audio dramas?
