My history with this song:
weeeeeeee – also who remembers how normal everything was when the music video dropped? what a normal time May 2023 was to be a Swiftie. *nods sagely*
Also, I did basically the same dance for "I keep my side of the street clean" BEFORE the Eras tour started as Taylor did on tour, so… bonding <3
"Karma" is one of Taylor's glossiest, cheekiest, and most gloating tracks, on which she attributes her good fortune to the good she herself puts out in the world ("I keep my side of the street clean.") while warning those who have crossed her and others that the bad they've done will eventually come back to bite them.
The song is musically peculiar within Taylor's discography. It's uncharactistically non-committal with regard to its key: it's in D major but constantly reaching for the out-of-key C major chord, which lends it a floating, effervescent quality. Furthermore, the chorus' rhyming structure is non-straightforward, convoluted even, perhaps reflecting the curious ways in which Karma as a force can manifest.
Just look at this (also included the varied post-bridge chorus because I like how it both manages to recreate this structure and vary on it to some extent):
Cause Karma is my boyfriend
Karma is a God
Karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend
Karma's a relaxing thought
Aren't you envious that for you it's not?
Sweet like honey, Karma is a cat
Purring in my lap, 'cause it loves me
Flexing like a god-damned acrobat
Me and Karma vibe like that
'Cause karma is the thunder
Rattling your ground
Karma's on your scent like a bounty hunter
Karma's gonna track you down
Step by step from town to town
Sweet like justice, karma is a queen
Karma takes all my friends to the summit
Karma is the guy on the screen
Coming straight home to me
Karma is of course a religious concept, borrowed from Hinduism: Taylor portrays her successful fate as ultimately wanted by the supernatural forces of the universe because she plays by their rules.
I would also argue that memory lies at the heart of her thoughts on how Karma functions: "You're terrified to look down / 'Cause if you dare / You'll see the glare / Of everyone you burned just to get there / It's coming back around." In a more material sense, Taylor proposes that the people the you has hurt will not simply forget this poort treatment and eventually the you will have to pay for this. As "Tell Me Why" put it so succinctly: "Yes, I remember what you said last night."
The bridge of Karma is one of the most euphoric moments in the discography, partially due to its superb arrangement, but also due to how satisfyingly it addresses all of Taylor's previous struggles with the problem of suffering: "Ask me what I learned from all those years / Ask me what I've earned from all those tears / Ask me why so many fade, but I'm still here."
She only has one answer: "it's coming back around."
Favourite lyric: "Sweet like honey, Karma is a cat / Purring in my lap 'cause it loves me" – I like how there are lyrics that only Taylor Swift would ever think to release. Fantastic. I'm grinning.
Favourite melodic line: The rhythm of "Step by step from town to town" really hits for me
Favourite production element: I love the super scratchy intro, how it portrays the change from struggle to ease at the heart of the song: Taylor earning her success after "all those tears". (also obviously I have not been listening to this full album in one go, but I recall LOVING how that scratchy intro sounds directly after "Labyrinth") However, I also need to point out the vocal layering of "I'm still here" in the bridge, it's genuine BLISS, it's like the musical equivalent of daring Zeus to strike you down with lightning, knowing he wouldn't dare.
