Iâm not hitting or beating my kids.
You canât force morals on to people.
All you can do is hope and pray that your kids grow up and stay on the straight and narrow.
âPunishment only suppresses behaviorâ
Ok now that Iâm on the subject of disciplining children.
What the fuck do you do if talking to your child doesnât get through to them???
Talking usually will work if youâre trying to understand the child AND setting boundaries in place. Tell me why you are angry xyz, now you canât push things over but you can punch a pillow. Give options and if those donât work when you do punish lay out that you gave them options, give them a chance to take them but Iâd they donât then it is a time our or grounding or what have you.
My only source is being a teacher of 2 year Olds for a year but it usually works wonders
What if they refuse to talk and tell you why???
Iâd give them space but let them know that youâre there for them. Honestly speaking when a child trusts you, even if they donât want to speak in the moment, they will eventually come around to talk to you. Because they know you wonât judge or yell or make them feel bad. Usually. And if theyâre like throwing a tantrum itâs one of those, okay I see youâre upset, we need to sit down so that we can calm down. Iâll sit with you. Do you need a hug etc.
I used to have a lil girl that threw massive tantrums and she couldnât /wouldnât talk in the moment and youâd have to get down on her level and ask, do you need a hug/squeeze a hand/etc. Sheâd answer yes and want you to squeeze her until she calmed down and was able to vocalize why she was mad.
*laughs* thatâs cute. Guys you canât reason with a child they are going to do whatever the fuck they want regardless of how much you talk with them. If your child is being a bray and throwing a tantrum what are you going to do? Try to loudly talk to them gently over the sounds of their screaming and crying?
âŠdo you not understand that a child is a human being with a brain and feelings and they just need to be TAUGHT to manage those feelings?
Do you not remember what being a child is like?
Do you not understand that if you donât teach them how to deal, and how to talk things through (which they are FULLY CAPABLE OF, as news flash, children GROW UP TO BE ADULTS, WOW I KNOW, SUCH A SURPRISE) theyâll turn into jaded, mean, hostile assholes? Just like you?
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with yâall? Kids are small human beings who havenât been taught to reason yet. THEY CAN LEARN. THEY DO LEARN. WHY ARE YOU ALL SO EAGER TO FORGET THAT YOU WERE ALSO CHILDREN ONCE?!
Like honestly, I donât love kids, but I remember what it was like to be treated badly by an adult. It fucked me up. Stop creating a self fulfilling prophecy by being an asshole to kids and then pointing at their reactions as if it justifies your fuckass behavior.
If your child is being a [brat] and throwing a tantrum what are you going to do? Try to loudly talk to them gently over the sounds of their screaming and crying?
Yes exactly. Do just that. The more a caregiver can stay calm in the midst of a childâs crisis, the more comfortable the child will feel being honest about the feelings they are able to express. Once children trust that you are listening to their real needs, the cry for attention will decrease and clearer communication can develop. Thatâs how parenting/caregiving succeeds. But having patience and compassion.
I have worked with hundreds of kids in classroom settings, home settings, wilderness camping, and more. Kids are figuring out who they are, and the constant expectation that they behave like adults is unreasonable and harmful. Physical punishment and yelling quite literally stifles emotional development and quashes their sense of self. Instead, meet them where they are at.
If one cannot stand the noise, make sure the child is safe and then leave the room. If you are at a store or other outing, leave your cart and go home. Pull over if you are driving, and let the child sit in the car while you stay outside until they have calmed down.
Do not interact with children if you cannot refrain from hurting them or yelling. Harming a child will not help them learn to be a better communicator nor will it help them mature faster.
It will, however, teach that child to fear, hate, and be disgusted by you.

Reblogging for the inclusion of options for people feeling attacked and overwhelmed by noisy childrenâif a child is pushing you into reactive behavior, you need to learn how to disengage and get a hold of yourself. You arenât helpless and you arenât trapped, youâre big and strong and fast and no, you DONâT have to tolerate horrific behavior being blasted at you by a kidâyou can separate yourself from the situation!
Yep. Itâs hard, and few people have the spoons to manage the ideal, emotionally mature reaction all the time, but if you model it as an adult your kids will start learning from you. Sometimes itâs good to check in with âwould I think this was an acceptable way to interact with children I was babysitting or being paid to teach?â
Babysitters and teachers get to go home at night and take a break, yes. This lends some emotional recovery time. But they also know that they can deal with childrenâlots of children all at the same time!âwithout any physical harm, abusive language, or even prolonged yelling.
Iâve worked with children aged 2-16 and college students from 17+ and Iâve only had one occasion where anything remotely physical was necessary to maintain a safe and respectful environmentâ and that was just getting a program head to step in and separate an 8 year old from the other kids until he could calm down from a complete meltdown.
As for my part, I used to have tantrums as a kid. Fall on the floor, screaming, crying until I couldnât breathe tantrums. My mom had a variety of strategies for dealing with them, but she always said she never held it against me when Iâd say âI canât stopâ because she knew I really couldnât. I literally didnât have the emotional skillset to always handle all my feelings at the time. And you know what did stop them? I got older and figured it out.
Like, seriously, tantrums arenât even fun for the person having them. Theyâre awful and scary and overwhelming and miserable. NOBODY present is having a good time. Kids absolutely do not want to be having them. But the toolset for handling overwhelming feelings is *learned.*
Being a kid doesnât deny you basic human rights. Yeah, your kid is having a tantrum, yeah, your kid isnât doing what you want them to right now. But guess what? That doesnât give you the right to treat them like shit.
