Junpei/Chidori I

“Hey, hey, hey, Chidorita!”

Junpei strolled into the hospital room and took a seat right next to the stiff recovery bed. He placed a small box he had been carrying onto his lap. Chidori looked up from her sketchbook just long enough to give him a glazed stare, her eyes only half-open. The girl went back to her drawing.

“So… what’re you drawing today?”

“…A hideous monster from my dream.”

“Hm…” Junpei leaned over at her paper. “Kinda looks like me.”

“Yes,” she subtly smiled. “I know.”

“Anyway, sorry I couldn’t come in yesterday,” he sighed. “Had an emergency. Mitsuru-senpai thought Koromaru was dying, but it turned out that he just got into the reserve dog food and wouldn’t get up. But you know Senpai. She's kinda always…”

While Junpei talked, Chidori kept sketching away, toiling away with her colored pencils. They wouldn’t give her regular ones, so these soft ones would have to do. The only sharp thing that they did give her was a pencil sharpener.

“…and Yuka-tan immediately accused me of putting gum under her desk!”

“Did you?” Chidori asked, not diverting her eyes from the page.

“I mean, yeah, but it sucks that she immediately assumed I was guilty, you know?”

“I think I know it better than you might think.”

“Hm?” Junpei tilted his head. “What do you mean?”

“Take a look at me,” she said, setting her book down to look at the young man. “I talk differently, I dress differently, and I act differently from others my age. As a result, people assume that I’m some kind of freak or mentally disturbed girl.”

“Well… I didn’t think that,” he shrugged, looking away. “I thought you looked pretty cute. You know, sitting there with that cute white dress just drawing the scenery…”

“And I thought you looked…” Chidori stopped herself.

“What? Thought I looked like what?”

“Well… Junpei, you do have a habit of looking aimless when you walk around.”

“Heh, don’t I know it,” he smirked as if that was something to be proud of. “Anyway, it’s been in my lap the whole time, and you haven’t asked me about the box!”

“Oh… Should I?”

“C’mon, you’ll love it!”

“Alright…” she sighed, tiredly leaning back in her bed. “What’s in the box, Junpei?”

“Well, today on the way home from school I saw a little guy in the road and had to save him before a car came by! So for the afternoon…” Junpei reached into the box and pulled out a small leaf turtle. “You’ve got the company of me and this little guy! I named him Leo.”

“Leo…” Chidori looked positively starstruck at the turtle, as if she were looking at a miracle happening before her very eyes. The girl gingerly cupped both hands together and held them out. “May I… hold him?”

“Oh yeah, ‘course!”

Junpei handed the turtle over to Chidori, who continued looking at the creature with wonder. Though the turtle had retreated into its shell momentarily, it poked its head out to look at Chidori. Slowly, it extended its limbs out and rubbed its head against her thumb.

“Aw, looks like the little guy likes ya!” Junpei chuckled. “So, what do you think? New friend?”

“…” Chidori looked at Junpei with a smile that displayed how truly happy she felt. She couldn’t even explain it herself, but the little creature in her hands filled her with joy just to hold. “Do you think I could keep him?”

“Oh, uh… I don’t know if the hospital allows pets.”

“Your Kirijo friend can make it happen, though, right?” she asked, scratching under the turtle’s chin. “And I know you can make her do it.”

“Well, uh…” Junpei scratched the back of his head. “Yeah, I could do that.”

“Thank you,” Chidori smiled, gently caressing the creature’s shell.

“So, I guess you really like the little fella then, huh?”

“I don’t get to meet other people with shells very often.”

“Hm? You don’t got a shell. You talked to me pretty easy.”

“You’re an exception,” she explained, picking up her sketchpad and beginning to draw the shape of her new friend.

“Aw, is it ‘cuz I’m so charming? Ruggedly handsome? Suave to a fault?”

“Annoyingly insistent.”

“…Oh.”

“But I guess you wouldn’t be talking to me right now if you weren’t, so…” Chidori gave a small shrug. “You have to be doing something right.”

“Now that’s what I like to hear!”

Silent Hill F. Amazingly written game. It was so good I needed to draw at least one fanart. I loved the storytelling and symbolism in the game, as well as crafting theories with friends to solve mysteries before we reached the end of the game.

The painted family and their relationships with the Dessendre family are super fascinating to me. One of the things that's really interesting to me is that, in the game files, they're referred to as the "mirror family". This evokes Renoir's line about art as a mask and a mirror, and has me thinking about what these mirrors reflect. I wanted to make some images that play off of the mirror idea and I guess I'll start with Clea's.

For Clea, it's really interesting, because we see so little of her. In our only real scene with Clea, we do glimpse a lot of her character, although as is typical with this game, none of it is stated outright. We see her pragmatism, her unsympathetic and unsentimental nature, and her focus on action … but also her soft spot for Alicia. Despite her harsh words and bossy manner, she uses an affectionate nickname ("our little shadow" -- a reference to Alicia's current grief and depression, but also maybe a callback to childhood when Alicia would tag along after her older siblings?) and offers her some sparing praise. Later, we see her again in the Endless Tower, where she speaks disparagingly about her parents' dramatics (even as she creates 'Painted Love') but also encourages Alicia to be true to herself and uncompromising in her choices.

Her general manner with Alicia is affectionate but impatient, like a lioness with the runt of her litter. You can sort of imagine their sibling dynamic in childhood; little crybaby Alicia, tagging along, stamping her feet and demanding to be included lest she Tell On Them, but also requiring that the rules be softened and explained and adapted to something more age-appropriate. And then Clea, frustrated at this unasked-for invasion, but also dutiful and protective nonetheless; chivvying Alicia along even as she gives her a bit of sisterly hell.

In Act III we see that the monsters that have wreaked so much havoc on past Expeditions are Clea's, not Aline's. Still the act of a Paintress, just not the Paintress that everyone has been blaming. Her manner with Alicia is brusque and unpitying, but her actions towards the people of the Canvas are brutal and unfeeling. It could be argued that this is war, and she is simply a soldier obligated to kill the enemy … but then we find Painted Clea and Simon, and her behavior is almost sadistic. She could have simply killed them, but she chose to manipulate and enslave them, using them to do violence against those they love. She may be mortally offended by Painted Clea's existence, but that's hardly Painted Clea's fault! It was Aline who took this raw bit of potential and energy and shaped it with her daughter's face and memories and forced it to act out an imaginary life in Clea's name. Same with the Hauler. It seems really interesting that her worst cruelties seem reserved for those who are most like her or closest to her. (It's this, more than anything else, that makes me think Simon was based off of someone real; she shows a bit of similar approach to Painted Verso, recruiting him and sending him on a mission, and it seems to leave both of them equally but differently devastated.)

But, in the end, she's not the one trying to destroy the Canvas. Renoir is. She seems willing to tolerate Aline and Alicia's incursions into it, although not without resentment, judging by the Lady of Sap. She slips into savagery here and there, but it seems mostly inward, directed at images of herself and deflected away from those she loves. The other innocents that get caught up in the violence ... we don't know how she feels about them.

So, thinking about mirrors and masks, I wanted to capture some of this dichotomy. In the foreground is perfect Clea with her expressionless mask, beautiful with her impossibly long, impossibly thick, impossibly shiny hair. Composed and sipping her tea, undaunted by the dark, creaky manor or the wisp of ghostlike curtain caught by the wind. In the background, her painted twin is the mirror of her abused and shattered heart, reflecting the cruelties she inflicts on herself and fighting to break free.

Been playing Clair Obscur and have almost gotten to the ending- just need to level up and fight Renoir for the 3rd time -but had a realization we felt we needed to put down before we do: Verso is like a more subdued Dante Sparda and we’ve got Thoughts(tm) just how Verso has Feelings(tm).

Verso can be super cocky and smug and even admits to being vain about his looks to the point he keeps getting his hair dyed now that it’s been turned grey but his skill tree has moves that lead him to do damage to himself or take on the burdens (status effects) of the others in the party. Not to mention when the going gets tough- when things get serious -Verso does as well. The man has a buttfuckton of self loathing and Feelings(tm) about being what we think he perceives- or at least what we, personally, think he perceives -as a “lesser” existence. He’s more than willing to die if it means the “real” Dessendre family gets at least some sort of closure. He may have the original Verso’s memories but he also doesn’t see himself as the Verso that painted Lumiére. Because that Verso died in the fire and for as much as he loves Aline, as much as he calls her “mother”, he’s also acutely aware that the canvas isn’t where Aline belongs. She may have spent time with the painted Verso and Renoir and Alicia and Clea but Aline needs to move on and she refuses. Verso very clearly blames himself and his entire existence for keeping her there and he probably feels like dying for real would be some sort of recompense for the harm he feels he’s caused by simply being there. He (poorly) hides this self-loathing behind his goading of enemies and talking about how he’s oh so handsome and it’s clear from his skill tree alone. And that’s not even getting into the whole “Perfection” aspect of his gameplay style.

And speaking of characters who gain gameplay bonuses by being consistently good at what he does but also has a lot of family trauma he hides behind a sense of bravado: Dante Sparda.

Not enough people give Dante credit for pretending to be well-adjusted when he’s only just really good at deflection and subterfuge when it comes to his past.

For all of his silly little dances, for all of his enemy taunting, and for all of his love of pizza and strawberry sundaes Dante is very very much full of the trauma of being orphaned at a young age. The man grew up constantly being hunted by demons and being the inadvertent cause of so much death and suffering that he blames himself to the point he sends most of the money he earns on the jobs he completes to various different charity organizations and the families of people who also lost loved ones thanks to him. Dante isn’t much better at hiding his inner turmoil as Verso is; it just seems like it because he’s more deceptively outgoing. And we do mean deceptively. Dante is the kind of guy who at first appears to be friendly and chill to everyone but the moment you dig deeper into the man himself he will shut you down. He’ll make excuses about how nobody wants to hear sob stories about his past or he’ll lie by omission; talking up certain more sensationalized events and dismissing other things as unimportant. If he even talks about himself in the first place. Dante doesn’t talk about his past with anyone except maybe Vergil and even then they both tend to be too busy fighting each other to actually talk about their real feelings (hello again sparda sibling communication issues. how do you do?). But the only time you really get much of anything about their pasts other than the legend of Papa Sparda it’s to do with Dante and Vergil as twins and what happened in relation to each other before they got separated.

Dante getting super salty at Vergil in the DMC5 ending credits stuff for not saying “Jackpot” is both funny because for real? That’s the thing you get genuinely upset over? The fact your brother refused to say your shared childhood catchphrase? But also helps you realize just how stuck in the past Dante actually, truly is. He can’t let it go because it’s all he thinks he has. Even with all of the friends and colleagues he’s made over the years- including the ones who have died just for being around him and/or while they were in the process of helping him fight demons (you know, like how Verso lost a lot of people while trying to get Aline out of the canvas) -Dante still keeps all of them at an arms length. Even his nephew. Although we’d argue that it’s because he doesn’t want to be reminded of the fact that his brother spent a night with someone who wasn’t him even though Dante has been trying since he was fucking eight to find and keep Vergil with him for longer than a fleeting moment but that’s besides the point.

Both Dante and Verso are way more broken up inside thanks to the things that have happened to them and the things they’ve done than they’d ever care to admit and the fact that they both refuse to talk about their pasts with anyone other than their family- or what’s left of them at least -is very much proof of that. They’re much less well-adjusted than they want others to think they are and the more you watch them in their natural habitat the more it shows.

guess it makes sense now why we’re so attached to Verso as a character when we’ve been a Devil May Cry fan since middle school lololololololololol

There's just something very teenager about Alicia/Maelle's selective obliviousness to me, in this case in her relationship with Renoir. One second she's utterly confident she could convince Renoir against destroying The Canvas, fully aware of how often she got her way around Papa, the next she tries to throw herself a pity-party (surrounded by the cutest Nevrons on the Continent btw) about how she's just the average unliked youngest kid with Clea and Verso being the favourites . Meanwhile, Renoir's assessment of his kids by the order of birth being: 'Picks too many fights'; 'Please stop being a faker 🙄' and 'My baby is amazing she is the cutest smartest she's a star she can do anything I'm her biggest fan 🎆❤️🥰🩷🥰🧡🎆!!!!!

Clea can keep pretending not to give a fuck about the Canvas but I’m gonna be honest I don’t think anyone cares about it more then her

She painted half this world with Verso. She painted the strongest turtle ever, gave him overpowered abilities and made him her best friend. They sang and they danced and ever since she left Francois was never the same.

She helped paint the landscape, together they made the endless tower. He was scared of the dark so she painted her Lampmaster to fuck with him. She fought with Verso, Monoco, Noco and all the Gestrals and traded words with the Grandis, helped Esquie find his rocks.

After the Fracture she could’ve made her Nevrons anything, an army without soul to end her families madness. She doesn’t. She adds stalacts in the cold, she adds over a dozen mimes, she adds her Nevrons that do not attack they simply eat the mountains their on. She adds her dancers, her sky and sea serpent. She adds things that belong in this world, creatures who match their position in the Painting.

She paints over Painted Clea. She was content to let Aline stew in her grief, but she draws a line at this false representation of her. She has Simon kill her Axon. She is already in this painting. She is the Fading Woman and the Lady of Sap. This whole world is her work, all of it her representation.

Her family is fighting over Verso’s memory like dogs with a bone and they have destroyed her world. She painted half of this Canvas, a Canvas wrecked during the Fracture. His Gestrals and Grandis were misplaced, the land split.

Clea does not want to destroy this Canvas. The last piece of their brothers soul. But her brother is dead now, and her sister has been maimed and her mother is running from it and her father is too content to run right after her. The people who did this still breathe, something Verso can’t do and Alicia can only do with pain.

War is on their doorstep, and she can’t protect Alicia and her parents are too busy to be useful, her mother lost her spot as head of the painters council. Destroying the Canvas is the only way to get that semblance of her family back because Aline will never stop and Renoir will never stop chasing her.

They all tackle their grief differently, and Clea’s method is revenge. I imagine it’s no help that the only way she’ll have support in this war she singlehandedly wages is if she destroys the world she built with her deceased brother.

One day Clea woke up and not another person in her house made a sound. Because Verso was in the ground, Alicia was robbed of her voice and her parents have lost their minds.

bad idea to associate a song with a character/ship. even worse idea to put it on while you put away laundry because you have it stuck in your head. all of a sudden you have this montage of your favorite moments from that 80k unfinished work from 2019 playing behind your eyelids and you're not even cleaning anymore.
