Worth the read for sure! Being shipped to Mexico: “Utopia for Realists: How We Can Build the Ideal World”. The author, Rutger Bregman is a journalist at The Correspondent, and one of Europe's most prominent young thinkers. He has published four books on history, philosophy, and economics.

His History of Progress was awarded the Belgian Liberales prize for best nonfiction book of 2013, and Bregman has twice been nominated for the European Press Prize. Here is why you will want to read this book: You admit that things look pretty dark now and our future looks pretty bleak? Well what you need, my friends, is a dose of hope to wipe away that despair. Utopian thought provides that hope and shines a light upon some possible future pathways.

At any rate when things fall completely apart we better be ready with some bright ideas about how to make the world whole again.

This book is filled with some challenging ideas that are presented with such clarity you are likely to go out and win some brew pub arguments with your new found audacity. It also felt good to read. It was also a fast and easy read - despite how challenging some of the concepts were.

Latin America accounts for 8% of the world’s population and a third of its homicides, which makes it one of the world’s most murderous regions. At its violent core is El Salvador, where an imported American gang culture rivals government authority, and its leaders hold sway with a surplus of money, guns and willing young men. Unlike the major drug cartels that for years produced much of the region’s violence - using murder in the service of selling marijuana, cocaine and heroin largely to Americans - gangs in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala profit from extorting their own neighborhoods.

The gangs have evolved a more violent, chaotic economic model, one that is advancing in drug-trafficking countries, including Mexico, where large cartels have splintered into many warring groups.

“We’ve left behind the era of the cartel and the kingpin,” said Alejandro Hope, a security consultant in Mexico City. “Today, most violence in Latin America is the result of a new system that’s more diverse, harder to control, and much more local.”

Insecurity in Mexico

US's top military-intelligence official described how the war on Mexico's cartels has produced even more violence. 2017 ended as Mexico's most violent year in recent memory, with 25,339 homicide cases — more than during the peak year of inter-cartel fighting in 2011.

Crime and violence have steadily increased in Mexico over the past three years, and the bloodshed over the past decade has come despite, and often because of, the Mexican military's and federal police's presence in the streets.

Speaking before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, Army Gen. Robert Ashley, the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, described a key trend that has contributed to the violence.

Ashley told the committee what has "transpired over the last couple of years is you had five principal cartels; we alluded to the number of captures (of cartel leaders) that had taken place, over 100. Those five cartels have kind of devolved into 20, and (as) part of that outgrowth, you've seen an increase in the level of violence."
