Andy McMillin is part of the third generation of the McMillin family from San Diego of off-road racers took his time here to take and share a picture of the scenario surrounding him during pre-running for the up coming #Baja500. He got his start riding with his dad Scott McMillin, pre-running when he was just two years old.

He demonstrated he had what it took to win after McMillin became the youngest overall winner of the SCORE Baja 1000 in 2006 racing with Robby Gordon. He then followed that up with overall wins in 2009 and 2011 racing with his dad, and won again with a back-to-back victory with Rob MacCachren in 2014 and 2015.

San Felipe 250 accident 2018

Now that's some interesting read in the San Diego Union Tribune. Shines a different ligth on the Terrible Herbst Trophy Truck accident that killed 2 spectators and cast doubt on the "spectators to close to racetrack" remarks initially made.

The friends, Omar Coronado and Abelardo Padilla left San Vicente to see the races. The group set up camp about 30 feet from the course, and prepared lunch. Though several members of the group had been drinking beer, consumption had been moderate, Delgado said; Coronado, who was the designated driver, had not been drinking at all.

As the Terrible Herbst Trophy truck approached, it hit a large rock and lost control, causing a nearby group to scatter. Veering off the course, the truck initially headed straight for the spot where witness Delgado, his son, and three other members of the group had been standing.

But it then made a sudden turn, Delgado said, skidding in the direction of Coronado and Padilla, spraying them with dirt before slamming into them, and killing them on the spot, he said. The driver and his co-pilot were unaware of what had just happened when their vehicle came to a stop by some bushes just off the track, Delgado said. He said said some ten minutes had gone by - the brother said no more than 20 minutes when they watched as members of Herbst team arrived in pickups, and quickly drove off with the two racers.

As they were being taken away the driver “was crying,” Guillermo Delgado said, while the navigator “could not be calmed down, he was devastated.” Still in shock from the accident, the Delgados then watched as a man got into the Trophy Truck, and drove it away, despite members of the crowd telling him not to move it.

More than a month later, Delgado said he does not blame the driver for the accident, but for leaving the scene. He also blames “our police system that did not arrest them” for doing so, and allowed them to get away. “If they had done this in the United States, they would have faced consequences. How can they do this in Mexico and just wash their hands of it?”

As in the United States, it is illegal to leave scene of an accident, particularly when injury or death occurs, said Fernando López Alarcón, a Mexicali attorney with long experience investigating accidents in Mexico.

Repeated to efforts to reach the Herbst team, or its representatives, were unsuccessful. Messages left at the family’s Terrible Herbst convenience store business in Nevada and at the Terrible Herbst Motorsports office in Huntington Beach were not returned.

Baja 1000 deal

Supposedly agreement made between ejidatarios around Mulege and SCORE Intl ensuring the uninterrupted pre-running and racing on the land of the ejidos. The Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve counsel president and the ejidatarios emphasized that they are NOT against the event or participating racers.

However during the 50 year history of the race repeat damages to property remained not adjusted or compensated for. According to the report agreed SCORE Intl to cover damages done to roads, fencing or livestock caused by pre-running and the race.

SCORE Intl also has taken out a 2 million dollar insurance policy to cover issues in Baja California and Baja California Sur.

Mayor Cecilia López González from Mulege made the formal commitment to carry out the repair and rehabilitation of rural roads immediately after the race, in a period not exceeding one month, as well the Directorate of Public Services committed to carry out the garbage collection and cleaning in the affected areas.

Stay in the USA and make America great again Norman, don’t come to Mexico, take large amounts of money from the communities that would need that funds badly to gain some security, selling them a fata morgana of “tourism you bring” with your “world desert series” only off-road insiders know! It's a niche sport not many people past the south-west of the USA know!

Norman, who bought SCORE Intl, the company that manages and organizes Baja 1000, in December 2012, has never concealed his fanaticism for Donald Trump. Norman and his wife went to New York City, to personally congratulate Trump.

It may work out again with talk and some “palms getting dusted” but at the end of the day the reality is: the heyday’s of Baja racing for foreign orgs like SCORE Intl are counted, no matter how much history! Just recently I read in a public off-road forum a remark in reference to racing in Mexico: “.....corporations like FIFA, IOC, and ASO make so much money and still require the countries to pay for allowing the race to pass through (Mexico is the opposite as SCORE pays land owners)“ and “....... It'd be great to see some of the factory teams make an effort to give back to the people like the North American off-road family does in Mexico”. What do you really give back? The municipales (cities/counties) and states (Baja California & Baja California Sur) do have to pay a very “healthy” amount to have the “privilege” that the race org runs over their land.

There might be some ROI during a few days with slightly elevated tourism but how much of that ends up with the people?? North American racers come to Mexico, they hang out with off-roader’s or mingle with the fans but do they ever ask the regular Joe or Jane on the street? There are just as much people fed up with the off-road circus as there are are supporters!

San Felipe 250 start positions draw

Drawing for start positions this Saturday for 26th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250. Entries from across the globe, including many of the world’s top desert racers are entering in time for Saturday’s start draw for next month’s 26th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 desert race. With the drawing being held at the SCORE International headquarters in Los Angeles, the race itself will be held March 9-11 along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. With entries accepted up to race morning, over 225 entries from over 15 US States and 10 countries expected to enter the race and competition will be held in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the popular race. Following January’s two rounds at the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will be visiting Mexico for the first of three annual SCORE Baja races in 2012. The start draw for Round 2 of the 2012 SCORE Desert Series will determine the starting order within each of the various classes in the elapsed-time race. “San Felipe has long been a very popular spring race on the SCORE Baja racing schedule and this is our third year with MasterCraft Safety as the co-title sponsor of the race along with Tecate,” said Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after SCORE was founded in 1973.

“With this year’s race being our third of the season we expect a great race in a superb venue that will launch are three final races of the season in Mexico.” Pre-running will be allowed on the actual race course from Saturday, Feb. 25 through Friday, March 9 and SCORE CEO/President expects to announce details regarding the 2012 course in the next two weeks. A unique part of Saturday’s drawing will be the special drawing for the top 12 finishers from the nearest previous SCORE Baja race entered in the current race in both SCORE Trophy Truck and the unlimited Class 1. For this race it will be the top 12 finishers in each class from last November’s 44th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. After those groups are drawn, the remainder of the entries in each class will be selected for their respective starting positions after the first group in each class.
