Welcome!

Hello! This is my birding blog, balconybirds! It's called that because of all the birds that I attract to my balcony, lol. I also take a lot of pictures of them too! Along with that, like to go birding on the weekends and take a lot of pictures as well :) You can expect at least two of my bird pictures posted a day, as well as a longer post from my birding adventures posted on Sunday or Monday.

Also, a gentle reminder: if you see that I misidentified a bird, please let me know politely, and I'll correct the mistake. I'm still new to birding, so I'm bound to mess up. If you're rude or mean about it, I will block you. Sorry! I just don't need that in my life.

The Wren babies started hatching last night, and then this cute scene happened. The male came over with a snack, and he would not give it to the female, he wanted to feed them himself. These birds can be tiny tyrants but they are also super adorable at times. I only did minor edits here because it is kind of sweet to see him taking so much time when outside they are the quickest, sneakiest little things.

House Wrens can be a bit of a sensitive topic amongst birders who provide and monitor nestboxes because they can destroy whole clutches on their quest to dominate an area but things like wren guards can keep the peace, and they are a native bird, so if they do build a nest in one of my boxes, they can have it. They are charming little things with big personalities, and they make the funniest faces. Here is the female, sitting on her six eggs. (This is not the Chickadee box.) They should start hatching this week.

This is something you may see on hot days - this Blue Jay is not injured, it is taking a sunbath. It is done for skin care and grooming and helps with parasites. I always love seeing it because it feels like they have to feel perfectly safe when they do it.

I recently saw this with a Stellar's Jay (the same bird pictured here) and it initially had me worried it was sick or injured! Very relieving to learn about this interesting behavior.
