Child-feeding can Be the Best of Times. And the Worst of Times
Problems when feeding small children.
Parenting can be tough, especially when it comes to feeding baby children. All children are different. But children can sure be finicky when it comes to the food they like. On any given day, their preference and or their distaste may change day to day. It’s enough of a challenge to get most kids to eat.
You will likely spend a part of the time chasing your child around the room, just to get some food into his mouth. Alternatively, you may spend your time convincing your child not to spit out but to chew.
Your child isn’t having any fun, either. It can be a ‘no win’ situation.
Tackling the problem of feeding your kid requires two things to consider. Firstly, understanding basic principles of child feeding. And secondly using techniques to accomplish the task.
Basic Principles of Child Feeding.
Babies, especially those new to food, might not enjoy food all that much.It is a very strange and unfamiliar experience when you consider it. So many things to navigate, surfaces, bowls, food type, food temperature, eating utensils.
Do take into consideration that as human beings, children will naturally want to eat, if they’re hungry and need energy. After all, isn’t the feeding signal for children, usually a cry?
Babies will cry when they’re hungry to get their milk. Similarly, a child will cry when hungry, to get their food.That’s your opportunity.
You’re working with the basics here. Forget feeding food to a kid, simply because it is “healthy”. Babies do not think in terms of “healthy diets and lifestyles”. All they care about is the experience of their meal, what it tastes and looks like, the texture when placed in their mouths, and of course the comfort of their experience.
Provide that to them, and you and your baby share a successful feeding!
Techniques for Successful Feeding
A good starter technique would be the size of your baby spoons. The spoon size is important. It has to be just right. If the spoon you are using is too large, then you have a problem. The spoon may not be comfortable for their mouths.
A second technique would be baby spoons color. Appeal to your child’s sense of color. However, plastic may be your only option in this respect. You have to consider the pros and cons of plastic.
Natural material like bamboo spoons are a good alternative and may be healthiest for baby. Look for ones that are made with lacquer or coatings or glues. Although generally not recommended, babies will like the texture and firmness of natural bamboo.
The third and most important point is the food your baby eats. If your child can digest a food, let them try it. They might like or hate the food. It’s all about experimentation.
If they do like the food,
make sure you try to prepare food with similar tastes and textures next time
. You may even prepare food that they hate,
while changing the texture and taste blends, making it overall appealing. One day may be completely different than the next day. It’s a world of trial and error, and learning and improving.
