Her ship had crashed onto the ground. She needed to find anyone in order to see where she had crashed. Her communicator was no good, so she jumped out of her bent ship and began to look around.

Bandanna was on the scene quickly, toting his spear with him, just in case. “Hello? Who are you?” He wasn’t going to point his spear just yet, he had no reason to think this new person to be bad.

“I’m Selene Starhowler. Class F of the Starfleet Academy. I crashed just now. Who might you be?”

A lot of words he entirely understood but formed into a sentence he didn't.

"I'm Bandanna Dee, official royal advisor and head of the royal guard at Castle Dedede. It's nice to meet you!" A nub was held up to shake.

They were fine now, he could move perfectly fine, too much pressure was uncomfortable but he'd live. Seeing Matter leave the Halberd he knew he should at least try to talk to him... maybe it'd help them both. "Matter? Are... are you handling this alright?"

  {✫} No, not really. He’s stressed, uncertain, and more unsure now than ever if the rest of the crew trusts him. The fact that Dark still hasn’t woken up from the slumber he forced him into has left him with no one to speak with other than Vul, and no conversation with him ever ended without increased anxiety.

  He’s at the base of the hill right now. There’s no part of him that wants to go back up to the top and show Bandana the chrysalis. For now, he’s happy to just have a little company that isn’t expecting him to give orders.

  ❝I’m…managing, but I wouldn’t say I’m doing well.❞

  Miserable was putting it nicely. Desolate, hopeless, and abysmally depressed were the words he would have used if he didn’t want to keep Bandana from worrying.

  Not that he could blame them, since he’s pretty sure many of them lost both of their father figures in a single fell swoop, but…the energy their sorrow gives off forces him to fight off going comatose if he sits still for too long.

  ❝I don’t know how to fix that. I don’t know if I can, really.❞

"That's a good idea. See, I told you you'd figure out how to lead. That's exactly the right thing to do. Help take their minds off what's going on, they'll appreciate it, I'm sure."

He knew this had to be incredible difficult for Matter, but him doing his best was all his crew could ask for. He certainly seemed to be giving it to them.

"Just keep their spirits as high as you can, it certainly won't be an easy task but I'm certain it's one you'll rise to. You're already making good plans."

An explosion? It was so bright! The Dees in the castle were instantly riled up by it. High Alert, that didn't look any kind of good.

  As for doing what’s best for them, Matter hopes that keeping them busy is the right decision. Their progress in reversing the damage Galacta did is growing more impressive by the hour, based on the data they’re sending back to them.

  ❝I’ve ordered them to focus on rebuilding the areas Galacta destroyed. I’d rather not let them grieve extensively, or else they might actually believe that Meta and Gala are…❞

  He can’t quite get himself to finish that sentence.

He gets a little uncomfortable hearing the rumble. He hadn’t meant to upset Matter that way… “That’s great to hear, I wouldn’t have expected him to have said anything less. You’re doing great with leading them, in my eyes anyway.”

“Yes, of course. Keeping them busy right now is a good plan. It’ll keep their thoughts not on… what happened.” He doesn’t want to say it either, if he’s honest. He doesn’t want to think about that happening to either of the Knights. Let alone both.

  {✫} He runs his fingers over the Warp Star at his neck, a sort of habit he’d developed since he’d come into possession of it. Its smooth surface and gentle glow had been helpful in keeping him calm whenever he thought about the future.

  ❝My only concern is that we’re going to run out of things to fix before that crystal busts open. I’m not sure how well I can lead them if they’re restless and anxious with nothing to do except wait.❞

That… did sound an issue, actually. What would they do if the crew got everything fixed?

“Well… maybe it’d be a good idea to give them a break at that point. They will have done so much, it may be for the best to just try to keep them all calm. I’m sorry if that’s not very useful, I’ve not been in a situation like this before…”

  {✫} ❝I’ll probably have to at this rate, but I’m not sure that I want to send them back home. If they’re gone when Gala–❞ His voice cuts off abruptly. Would it even be Galacta coming out of that thing? He has no idea. ❝…when the chrysalis opens, we’ll be defenseless if we’re not battle-ready.❞

  He reminds himself to go check on it later. The amount of energy it would give off if it actually broke open would alert him and every other magic user on the planet immediately, but for now it couldn’t hurt to see if it’s still unchanged.

“Well they don’t have to go home, just rest for a while. It’d be best to make sure everyone’s here for... that. Make sure everyone is gathered and ready, but let them just have some time to recover strength.”

Bandanna was actually a little concerned that Matter would try to pretend he was fine. Him admitting that he wasn’t okay, while still worrying him, showed him Matter would accept help. Hopefully, anyway.

“Then how can I help you? I’ll do whatever I can to help you through this. It’s going to be fine. It always is…” He’s not only comforting Matter but himself too. Meta’s his friend. He didn’t deserve this…

  {✫} Bandana’s certainty that this will turn out okay is admirable, but it’s impossible for Matter to replicate. They’d need a miracle in order for Galacta and Meta to come out of this alright. He wishes he could agree with Bandana aloud, but he’s never been a great liar.

  ❝I don’t know. I guess having more people around while I wait this out would be helpful. I can’t imagine I’m going to be doing much between now and whenever we see whatever’s inside of the chrysalis emerge.❞

  His voice may outwardly sound hollow and emotionless, but he truly means that. On a good day he wouldn’t have been able to express how much Bandana’s surprising devotion means to him, but there’s no hope of him having the words now.

  ❝You may be right, but that’s not going to stop me from worrying. The Halberd is looking to me for leadership, and that’s…certainly not what I was created for.❞

A slight sprinkling of pink dusts his cheeks when Matter says that he appreciates what he’s said. He’s struggled with emotion in the past, he knows Matter entirely means what he said.

“Well, thank you Matter. It means a lot for you to say that.”

He knows what it’s like to need to lead. The other Dees always turn to him for guidance on almost anything.

“I could help you, if you want. You’ve done a lot of things you weren’t created to do and I don’t believe for a second you can’t do this too. I’m worried too but… I know we can lead them through anything. Meta chose you to be Captain for a reason.”

  {✫} Bandana has a point…somewhat. He wasn’t created to rebel against Zero’s authority and flee the Hyper Zone, but that was never something his former master had advised against. His hubris created a loophole: he was so sure that his servants would remain under his control that rebellion was never mentioned.

  Following orders and being submissive, unfortunately, were things that were drilled into him in his first few months of existence. Sure, he had given orders before, but those were always given to him by Meta. Now that he’s the highest authority, he’s not sure if he’ll handle it as well.

  ❝Tell me what you do to lead. With luck, I will be able to replicate some of it on the Halberd.❞

He thinks for a moment about the question. "Well... It helps to think about what is best for people, even if you don't like it. I show authority without trying to be better than the people I lead. I don't try to rule them, just guide. Do that, and you'll have respect sooner than later."

Bandanna pauses briefly. "Not that you don't already, of course." He respects Matter, very much so. He'd follow him without question.

EVENT THREAD -- Ignition;;

  {✫} He gets back to his feet, then gently pulls Bandana back onto his. Matter yanks the Rainbow Sword out of the ground and places it back in its sheath at his hip. The blade hums for a moment, then falls silent. He’s sort of glad that it’s gone dormant again for the time being–the psychic energy that thing gives off is surprisingly malevolent.

  He holds up his good arm and waves to the ship, which begins to circle around them while looking for a good place to land. Its pilot quickly decides that an active volcanic slope would be risky to park on, so instead a rope is thrown down from an open door on the side of the ship.

  Matter huffs, then turns back to Bandana. ❝Let me carry you while I hold the rope. You shouldn’t strain against gravity while you’re injured.❞

He gladly accepts the help getting back up, pulling twice on his spear to get it out of the ground before putting it back on his back. It’s a little heavier than his old spear, but it’s done him very well so far, so he certainly won’t be complaining about it any time soon.

He copies Matter when he waves up to the ship, mostly out of politeness. Its a small wave but it’s the thought that counts. The huff catches his attention and he looks up at Matter.

If he wasn’t a tomato beforehand he certainly is now. “Oh! Uhm- okay. That- That would be nice…”

  {✫} ❝Hold still. Let me know if I’m hurting your ribs.❞

  He has to struggle a little bit, but after about a minute of careful adjusting, Matter’s safely lifted Bandana off the ground with his good arm. Now comes the challenge of forcing his weakened arm to regain motor control just long enough for him to hold onto a rope.

  Matter loops the dangling cord around his new arm a few times, then straddles it with one pointed leg. For extra security, he even manifests his misshapen mouth and bites down into the rope to make up for not being able to properly grip it.

  Slowly, the cord begins to retract, hoisting its passengers up with it.

"Okay, be careful with your arm, though."

He does his best to get into a comfortable position for Matter to hold him that ensures he won't fall. He also holds onto the rope with one hand and holds onto Matter with the other. He's still red faced.

As the rope begins to pull them both up he turns to the Swordsman. "Thank you again, Matter. I owe you my life."

He copies Matter when he waves up to the ship, mostly out of politeness. Its a small wave but it's the thought that counts. The huff catches his attention and he looks up at Matter.

If he wasn't a tomato beforehand he certainly is now. "Oh! Uhm- okay. That- That would be nice..."

  {✫} There were lots of things he hadn’t expected to happen that ended up happening today. Getting holes punched in his head and stomach, watching Galacta drill through a mountain with a laser he fired his mouth, losing an arm, etc.

  The hug catches him off guard more than any of that.

  Matter stiffens awkwardly. What is he supposed to do? Bandana is being incredibly kind and sincere and he’s just…sitting there, like a socially inept statue.

  Eventually, he reaches over with his new arm (which feels very strange and tingly right about now) and pats Bandana on the back as gently as he can. This is how hugs work, right? ❝Um…thank you. That’s very kind.❞

He was a little concerned by the way Matter stiffened in response to his hug. Was… this too much? He wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about contact and he was going quite past a friendly handshake right now.

However the gentle pat reassured him that he hadn’t made a bad judgement. It was just that Matter… didn’t quite understand. And that was fine. “You’re welcome. But if anyone should be giving thanks it’s me. You… you’ve saved my life twice already. It means a lot to me.”

The Dee is blushing again, and he doesn’t want to end the hug to pull his face mask up further to cover it. So he’s going to sit there and accept slooowly becoming more red.

  {✫} Oh god, he’s doing that reddening thing again. Is that normal? Should he be doing that while he’s injured? Or is the reddening because of the injury? Why are organics so hard to understand?small> 

  He continues the petting, if only because his current hypothesis on Bandana’s change of hue is that he’s overheating, and maybe petting him will calm him down enough to cool off.small> 

  No one ever said Matter was a biologist.

  He’s distracted from Bandana’s predicament by the sound of engines in the distance. Upon looking up, he spots one of the Halberd’s drop-ships approaching over the horizon. Had he been manifesting a mouth, a smile would have tugged at it.small> 

  ❝Oh, our ride is here. Do you need help standing up?❞

He doesn't look up at Matter but he does tighten the hug juuuust a little more. The more he pats his back the redder he gets. He didn't expect Matter to respond quite like he has but... well he's certainly not complaining.

Engines from above catch Bandannas attention quite easily and he follows Matter's one eyed gaze upwards. He's also relieved to see the ship approaching.

  {✫} ❝Probably. Though…the last time I had a limb chopped off, it didn’t look like this.❞

  He glances down at his limp arm, using his good hand to move it into his lap. The blue and lavender lines swirling beneath the white membrane. The orbs lining his wrist are beginning to grow back, but instead of their normal orange hue, they’re a deep shade of purple.

  The resemblance his wounded arm is taking to a certain member of his race is a little worrying to him.

  ❝Whatever happens, I’ll be fine. I’ve seen worse injuries. What about you?❞

“Then… is there anyone who could help you? I don’t want this to get any worse.”

Looking down at the colouration of Matters new arm he’s more worried than he was willing to admit. He remembered Termina quite well…

“Me? As long as you’re fine I will be too. But… I think Galacta cracked a couple ribs, maybe they’re broken. I dunno..” He shrugs a little. He’s more focused on making sure Matter’s alright.

   {✫} ❝Ribs? What are…❞ He has to stop and think for a second. The finer points of organic anatomy had the tendency to elude his memory. ❝Oh, those are bones. Don’t you need those? Having them broken can’t be good.❞

  He makes a note to have the medic on their envoy ship back to the Halberd examine Bandana immediately. A broken anything in an organic body likely spelled trouble.

  ❝There are medics on the Halberd that can treat you. As for my injuries, there’s no one on this plane of existence who can heal them except for myself. I’ll have to wait this one out and hope my outer shell grows back properly.❞

He waits while Matter works out what ribs are, not surprised by his lack of knowledge about anatomy since he didn’t seem to Have anything inside him other than that white core. He nods when he recalls what they are.

“Yes, that’s right. I… do need them but I think you having an arm is more important. Especially if it’s not supposed to be that way.” That colouration only spelled trouble, in his opinion.

“But what happens if it doesn’t? I can be helped, and I will greatly appreciate that, but what about you?” His thoughts, as usual, are more focused not on himself but on others.

  {✫} He ponders that outcome for a little bit. If his arm decided not to heal, and somehow his inner membrane decided to grow outwards and form a permanent new arm, then it might get a little more complicated to hide his status. Even his more powerful brethren didn’t have pure white void inside of them.

  Considering the galaxy’s most recent crisis, and the confirmed continued existence of an insane cultist or two, his arm looking like it currently does would draw him far more attention than he actually wants.

  ❝If, for some reason, this doesn’t heal properly, it won’t kill me. I’ve bounced back from worse circumstances.❞ He decides not to mention his fate at Kirby’s hands all those years prior. ❝To put it simply…I will live.❞

What worried him the most wasn’t the colouration of this new arm, it was that Matter didn’t exactly know what was going to happen with it. He didn’t know if he was going to be alright and that terrified him, but he wasn’t going to let it show. At least… not entirely.

Although… it reminded him too much of that THING. He didn’t even want to THINK it’s name let alone say it. And now Matter looked like it…

“Worse circumstances!? What’s surviveable that’s worse than losing a limb? Who’d even do that kind of damage to you…?” He’s quite worried about that. “I really hope you’re right…”

Matter knows full well that telling Bandana that Kirby was the one who killed him back when he actually deserved death would probably be anything but beneficial to his current emotional state. The poor thing is already worried enough for him–why would he make that worse?

  Still, he’s not sure he can lie to Bandana about his death. Not with him staring at him like that.

  ❝Ah…well. Back when I served my old master, I was forced to commit crimes that sort of…warranted my death. But when my kind die, we just return to the Hyper Zone and then reform. It hurts a lot worse than losing an arm.❞

His eyes were wide as he awaited a response. He knew he wouldn't enjoy what he was going to hear but he needed to hear it.

He's silent as Matter explains his past death. He raises his hands before hesitating. They slightly lower again before he suddenly hugs Matter tightly. "But you've changed. You've changed since then. If you hadn't then I would've died. You'll never feel that pain again if I have anything to say about it."
