it depresses me how homophobic, biphobic and sexist comment sections about green day always are if the post or video is outside of a younger audience or fans of the band. it has unfortunately become a way to track how comfortable people have gotten being openly bigoted thanks to the hellhole that is the U.S.
performances of tre during the saviors tour during “all by myself” where he usually wore a robe on top of his usually colorfully accented fits with eyeshadow and or eyeliner and skipped around being silly on stage had comments like “check his computer” and other things alluding to him being a predator under it.
the post that inspired me to write this was talking about how billie joe and adrienne met and it was just a bunch of pictures of them (adorable btw). there were comments calling her his beard and saying he must be miserable because she’s a woman. again with the bisexual men are actually just gay shit. (also billie joe has been out for a long time and made out with countless men on stage i really don’t think he would pretend to be straight if he was gay). i’ve seen comments joking about him having sex with men or being pegged, calling him a “flamer.” it’s crazy to see like old old homophobic language coming back like that. all of this is an attempt to mock and shame him for being bisexual and how he presents himself. even if he never sees it (i’m sure he has much better things to do than read hateful comments), green day have a very queer audience and others might see that and feel shame. we have enough of that, especially right now.
there’s also all the jokes about all three members looking like lesbians. it’s probably what i see the most. because to some people the worst thing in the world would be to look even a little like a woman and to be a lesbian. the hatred people have for lesbians, especially butch lesbians is horrifying.
i don’t have a good way to end this, i’m just sad to see so much open hatred. and of course, much worse is happening to people who aren’t famous or rich. we have to protect each other and support each other 💚
