“You’ve got all the presents right? And the cookies? I definitely packed them in that bag for you. The presents are there aren’t they?” The insistent nattering of your mom makes your eyes roll exasperatedly, looking at her with love and affection alongside just a hint of annoyance.

She means well and you try to tell yourself that repeatedly. This is the first Christmas that you’ll be spending not at your parent’s house for the day. It sounds a little lame when you say that, considering your age, but you’d never been in a committed relationship where you’d been living with someone else to spend Christmas with them instead of your own family.

Until this year.

This year marked your third Christmas with Hoseok, but it was your first Christmas living with him. You’d only made the transition into not only his heart and his bed, but his home, a few months ago. Both of you had moved slowly, letting his daughters get used to the idea of you being around more frequently until the prospect of you living full time with them wasn’t strange.

For both them and you.

Hoseok had been painfully aware that he needed to move slowly and carefully with his daughters and you’d been completely amenable to it, recognising that his three little girls were his entire world. But he’d also been careful to make you aware that his small world had expanded to include you.

Sometimes you think you have a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to your job.

On one hand, it’s a pretty incredible opportunity, one that you acknowledge not a lot of people get to experience first hand: which is working as an intern in the event operations department for Kcon—the annual Korean convention in which big Kpop groups will travel around the world to bring their music and their joy to the international fanbase. For someone who never actually had the means and the ability to make the trip as an audience member of your own accord, it’s fascinating to witness the back-the-scenes sight of how much effort and how much time goes into planning and organizing an event of this scale.

And because Kcon it in of itself is half a convention and half a concert, there were always many people needed to cover the different subsections of the event, which is where your role as an intern came into play. Given that there were two interns in the department of organizing the physicality of the event, you were put on the team mainly in charge of organizing the convention while the other intern assisted with scheduling of the talents and making sure the performances would go by smoothly.

But on the other end of that spectrum, working with vendors really allows you to see how many people handle responsibility and deadlines and it makes you want to pull the hair out of your roots. You like to think of yourself as a fairly reasonable person, giving a vendor 24 hours to respond to emails at the latest before having to resort to more emails and phone call—but this is absolutely ridiculous.

Checking In

I turned 30 2 weeks ago and actually had a decent birthday, despite having to spend it at home and away from family.

I submitted my first short story to a literary magazine. Though I’m now obsessing over whether it actually stands a chance of being chosen or if it’s just a mediocre story that took too many hours to write. Regardless of whether or not it gets picked, the submission alone was a really pivotal thing for me. I was kind of bummed that I didn’t have a significant other to share this small victory with. The handful of people who understood my writing journey are not as close to me and it just didn’t feel right letting them know. I celebrated/rewarded myself by buying a bunch of non essential items at Target and tried not to think about how lonely I am.

Being at home has made me realize that I don’t have much of a social life to get back to.

I’ve made a loose plan to move back to the south by the time the year is over, though I have no idea what I’ll do when I get there.

I haven’t been excited/fulfilled by acting in a long time and I haven’t figured out if its due to depression, genuine lack of interest, or being honest with myself about what I should and shouldn’t gravitate towards.

I miss my family, a lot. I worry about my parents and grandma especially because even though I teeter on believing that covid 19 is a real threat, I know that they have underlying health conditions that would complicate things if they become sick.

I am constantly talking to God and asking for signs.

I am not a bit more sure about my life’s direction than I was when I started this journey almost 3 years ago. I am ashamed of that sometimes.

I’m tired of washing dishes.

I’m pretty sure I have trichotillomania, and it’s gotten worse since I’ve been working from home.

I miss going shopping.

I wrote a short film.

Working from home has shown me how awful I am at productivity when rules are not set. I take mini naps and snack breaks frequently throughout the workday and when it’s time to go back into the office, I honestly don’t know how I will make it.

I met a guy on Twitter that I’ve been talking to but I’m actually getting more and more turned off by his strong opinions that he tends to tweet about black women and black people in general. I want to bring it up but you know me, passive aggressive Queen.

I miss engaging with my followers. Sorry I haven’t written anything of substance but I feel like nobody’s paying attention anyway lol.

Last week India passed a blatantly anti-Muslim law that seeks to naturalise millions of immigrants, except if they are Muslims.

In August of this year, India revoked the autonomous status of the Kashmir region, putting a communication blackout on the state. Kashmir has entered the fifth month of no internet and heaviest militarisation of any region in the world.

India is a secular, socialist republic. This bill is anti-constitutional and against the principles on which the country was founded

Naturally, there have been protests across the country. At the forefront of the protests are students from India's public universities.

Police opened fire on peaceful protestors in Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi, and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh.

Ever since then, the ruling fascist Hindu nationalist political party, the BJP, has been doctoring videos and sending fake news all over the internet, discrediting protestors and labelling them as terrorists

India has already seen too much religious violence, please please signal boost this, call your representatives, make them aware, get them to make statements. The only thing India and its dictator Modi care about is its image abroad

This post is dated December, 2019 so a little update (June, 2020) since I’ve seen it on my dash a lot lately:

Amidst the raging pandemic and our Government’s botched handling of it, GOI has found the time to book student activists under a draconian “anti terrorism” law called the UAPA.

Here’s a brief article about what exactly the UAPA is here. It was written in October last year so it’s before all of this, but it highlights the ways it could be misused, and why it’s a cause for concern.

Here’s another article about the same. Has proved prophetic, because our government NEVER fails to let us down!

Many student activists have been booked under UAPA, like Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita. Safoora Zargar, who is pregnant, has been jailed despite concerns about COVID-19 (and this being entirely under a draconian and unfair law).

[Oh btw, in a completely different story, no charges have been made against those suspected of inciting violence at JNU. It’s under investigation, which sounds promising, but uh, we’ve seen what’s happened in the past. There’s not really a lot of hope there.]

While there are scattered protests about this, and some mild coverage from very few news channels, and people have talked about it a little, it’s been lost under all the noise of the pandemic, the migrant crisis, cyclones, locust invasion and other horrors hitting the country right now. Please, please, PLEASE raise awareness about this.
