Welcome to my Barbie blog! I appreciate asks at any time about Barbie. If I don’t know something that I am asked I am more than happy to research it. I also have submissions open.

I am sure this goes without saying but I will not answer sexually explicit asks and whether I answer asks that appear to be in bad faith depends on my mood.

I make no promises that the blog will always be 100% child-appropriate but I will steer clear of anything outrageously inappropriate.

Horse figure of the day: Barbie Touch of Magic Sapphire Alicorn

This is really, really only on topic for my blog in the most broad terms but... I've been reading the book Girl Dinner by Olivie Blake, and there's a scene in that book where one of the viewpoint characters attends a party that is "Malibu Barbie" themed. One of the other characters in this scene is described as being dressed like Enchanted Evening Barbie.

That's actually kind of interesting to me, because Enchanted Evening has had a number of different releases. It started life as a fashion pack in 1960.

There was also a collectible reproduction of this as a doll in 1995.

And most recently it's been reimagined as a playline doll as part of the current "Replay the Classics" series.

There was also a 1991 playline doll called Enchanted Evening Barbie that bears some vague similarities to the gown but looks sufficiently different that I think this was just a name reuse rather than a deliberate homage or re-release.

It's certainly not what you think of when you say "Enchanted Evening Barbie", in my opinion.

None of these, you might notice, are Malibu Barbie so I have to say that the character in question is NOT dressing to the theme. The vibe, I think, is that she's taking the theme in a classy and upmarket direction, wearing a very specific Barbie gown rather than more generic pink clothes like many other described characters do... but in general, that means the event sounds way more like generally Barbie themed than Malibu Barbie themed.

But, the graphic lesbian sex scene where one of the characters is dressed as Enchanted Evening Barbie captured my imagination SO MUCH that I had to stop and think about this for a minute.

Are there any modern releases that allow little kids to unsafely handle food?

Not as far as I'm aware, assuming that by 'modern' you mean within the last few years. Gone are the days when Barbies would come packaged with jello or icing or other dubious foods to eat right off the toy. Now, generally speaking, toys are toys and food is food.

There's still food themed Barbie playsets that are interactive, like the pasta sets that come with dough to extrude, but not with real food in them.

That said I kind of miss the horror of the food sets from the 90s so if there are any modern variants anyone else knows of, please let me know.

It hasn't been officially announced by Mattel, but an upcoming Barbie series has been leaked and pictures are being shared online. The theme? Ugly holiday sweaters!

"Holiday" in this case not just meaning Christmas-themed but without being specific, because the set does have a Barbie with a Hanukkah sweater.

I wanted to mention this even though the release hasn't been officially announced by Mattel yet because this would be the first Barbie who isn't in the likeness of another person who is themed around Jewish traditions or culture. 65+ years in the making!

Hope you don’t mind me screenshotting your tags to provide a bit of an answer!

First off the fact that it’s only May is no doubt why this hasn’t been officially announced by Mattel yet and is still in the realm of sneak previews in unofficial channels. The lead time on design and development of Barbies is pretty long but they won’t want to announce them officially until closer to the holiday season. (Not all the way in December would be my guess, but at least when the holiday season is realistically on the horizon.)

As for whether it’s really the first official Barbie to represent a Jewish cultural tradition or holiday — yep. There’s been some Barbies in the likeness of Jewish celebrities or fictional characters, but that’s all. It’s virtually unfathomable to me, but there you go. Barbie has even been banned in some countries for being Jewish (Saudi Arabia I believe? But I am not in a situation I can factcheck that right now) but it’s never been an official part of the Barbie brand or lore, even as a special occasion release.

I did fact check this and to say she was banned for “being Jewish” is a bit of an oversimplification but she was referred to as Jewish by the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in their warning statement.

Also she was banned in Saudi Arabia but is no longer. She is however still banned in Iran.
