I love that the modern-day tumblr post equivalent of chain emails only requires me to reblog a relatively pleasant image instead of forward an email to a bunch of my friends and family members to quell my raging anxiety.

been thinking lately about spike’s love for human culture, specifically low culture. he watches soap operas and horror b-movies, he likes eating blooming onions and chicken wings and weetabix, he takes fashion inspo from punk subcultures. most vampires don’t seem all that interested in human culture, and why would they be - humans are food to them. spike eats humans too (until he doesn’t) but he’s also interested in their art and their cultural contributions. he thinks they make art worth appreciating. and he thinks art that is considered low culture is worth appreciating. maybe it’s because of his distaste for the people of higher social classes whom he knew as a human. he was made to feel ostracized from them and so he resents them and their art. maybe it’s because low culture is the kind of culture that is most readily available to him now that he’s a vampire and continues to be a social outcast. my personal suspicion is that he enjoys valuing cultural products that many others would scoff at and deem distasteful or pedestrian. he likes to give love to overlooked things.
To add, I feel this is a nice response to an extremely sensitive mama's boy poet being chosen out of all the possibilities of Victorian men into an evil vampire. He was so sensitive as a human (imo) he even wanted Dru to wait until mother could join him and the first people he attacks are all the ones who scoffed at his poems and their "effulgence." Then Dru joins him into the original Angel pack and he's like "oh, whose cool now? No more laughing at my poems!" And he spends the next like 90 years becoming the most badass he can be with his new slayer obsession and then the mid-1970s brings the punk fashion movement originating in the UK to be anti establishment and William the bloody has finally found everything he needs to be what he thinks of as "cool!" I forget where I was going with this, I got so excited I wanted to join in the talk with how sweet and kinda funny the bad, evil vampire spike came to be is :) I'm with you he looked for all the ways he could thumb his nose at the high society Victorian who never accepted him and made this a part of his "I've always been bad" persona! :)
My "Holes" review is 22 years in the making. This movie is one of the masterpieces that made me fall in love with movies, and I wanted to make sure this review did it justice. Grab a shovel and stay clear of yellow-spotted lizards. We're revisiting a 2003 treasure of a movie!
