Hello and welcome to barhd. This is an independent writing account for Dustin Henderson of Netflix’s Stranger Things with a few canon divergences. Please note that this blog will have dark themes, so please follow at your own comfort. This blog will be selective, mutuals only, 18+, heavily influenced by my own headcanons, and plot driven most of the time. I didn’t make it as far as I would have liked. I finished through episode 3. I’ll probably will only get through 3 more tomorrow night since I work early, but that still works out. I’m already brainstorming ideas for my oc ( @telekinsis ) during this season. Like she’s probably spotted at the hospital with her dad more often than not. ANYWAY, as always, I love Dustin.

DUSTIN LOOKED OVER AT EDDIE FOR A MOMENT, COULD SEE the exhaustion clear as day. It made him look ten times older than usual. It hurt his heart to see him like this. It hurt him even more that Eddie thought he was brave. He was nothing of the sort. Everyone else, though? Yes, he would say they were the true brave ones. Still, it did touch something with Dustin to hear that coming from Eddie. There was no question the man was another older brother he only wished for alongside Steve, “ I’m not. I’m scared half to death. Bravery has nothing to do with what I’ve contributed. ” that massive ego everyone said he had was really not there seeing how he could never take a compliment straight to the face.

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐤𝐞'𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝, everything sort of felt like all of the video games , all of the 𝘙𝘗𝘎𝘴 like d&d that the party has ever played somehow rose up from their monitors , their boards and their books , however they were played , and 𝙼𝙰𝙽𝙸𝙵𝙴𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙸𝙽 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙻 𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙻𝙳. but it wasn't the way mike dreamed about it as a kid , getting to hang out with his fictional idols and learning to be a great paladin. it almost felt as though ( if this was really what was happening ) that everything in these fictional worlds were coming to the real world to bite them in the ass , to get 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 at them somehow.

but for what? mike knew it didn't make sense. his mind just had a way of coming up with reasons for things just for the sake of there 𝙱𝙴𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙰𝙽 𝙴𝚇𝙿𝙻𝙰𝙽𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽 in the first place. after all , identifying the cause of a problem , in his experience , was the best way to come up with a solution for it. ❝ ... yeah , probably. but it's not like we can 𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚊𝚠𝚊𝚢 from it , since we got ourselves into this mess in the beginning. so ... i guess that means it's up to us to finish what we started , right? ❞ he gave a small sigh , fumbling with his fingers at the realization that he was about to open up , to share his emotions 𝙰𝚂 𝙲𝙻𝙴𝙰𝚁𝙻𝚈 𝙰𝚂 𝙷𝙴 𝙲𝙾𝚄𝙻𝙳 for the first time in a while. ❝ but , i won't lie. i'm ... 𝚜𝚌𝚊𝚛𝚎𝚍. scared of losing my home , of losing nancy , my mom , will , lucas , 𝚈𝙾𝚄 ... ❞

DUSTIN COULDN'T TELL IF COMPARING THEIR GAME TO THIS REAL horror was the smart thing to do or not. It let them understand things better to have a connection with something they knew. It was almost more frightening that way too. They had no idea what to call these actual creatures, but the game he loved was now trying to kill him. The more he thought about it, the more he realized he didn’t like the comparisons. HE, IN SOME WAYS, DIDN'T WANT TO FINISH IT. DUSTIN knew that wasn’t fair of him to think, but perhaps that the small childish wishing in the back of his mind. He was tired of losing people. He was tired of all the horrible memories that busted him in the night, “ I wish things were normal, ” he breathed out, talking more to himself. Blues flickered to Mike as he confessed. He knew his friend had to have been scared, but hearing put it more in perspective. Dustin leaned back, looking at him with caring eyes, “ I’m scared too, man. I don’t want to lose you guys like… like… ” like Eddie. His heart still shattered at the memory.

𖤐 ⸻ WASN'T THIS THE SWEETEST SURPRISE SHE'D GOTTEN SINCE CAMP STARTED ! and it meant more to her than she could even speak on . why ? because most of the campers were too busy side-eyeing her or being feral towards one another . it'd only been three days since camp started and she'd already put a stop to several fights between shadysiders and sunnyvalers . her smile grew more as she gently took the beautiful sunflower from him . " my most favorite flower in the entire world . " and it was true . sunflowers were her favorite and she found so much beauty to them . his sweetest though , reminded her -- that it'd been far too long since anyone had done something like this for her . bright blues moved from the flower and back onto the camper before she bent down just a bit and gave him a hug . " thank you so much for it . "

DUSTIN COULD UNDERSTAND THE RIVALRY OF THE TWO SIDES, BUT wasn’t camp supposed to have the two come together and have fun? That’s what Dustin hoped he was going to get, but of course every year that didn’t happen. Despite the hate each side gives each other, everyone seemed to dislike Caroline. Why? He didn’t understand. She was always so kind and helpful to him. Dustin enjoyed her company which was why he wanted to bring her a sunflower to brighten her day.

HE LOOKED UP AT HER WITH A SMALL SMILE, AND shrugged his shoulders, “ You’re welcome, ” the small hug given, he gave her a small squeeze back, “ Do you wanna come with me to pick some more? Maybe we can put some in the Mess Hall? ”

┊ ┊ ┊ ┊ ♥︎ . *. ⋆ 𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞. he remembered all the way back how in the fourth grade , it didn't take him very long to get the sense that his new friend would be the wise one , the 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 , the one who always knew exactly what to say and when. he knew he was getting way too lost in his own thoughts , that he needed someone else to tell him just how much he expected from himself. and 𝙸𝚃 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝙰 𝚂𝙷𝙰𝙼𝙴 it took him this long to realize.

❝ ... yeah , i know. and i should have 𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚛 , but ... i still appreciate it nonetheless. but still , sometimes i think ... why us? why did vecna choose to come after 𝚄𝚂 in the first place? why hawkins? ❞ a heavy sigh left him , shoulders sagging. ❝ maybe ... maybe it's because we feel dysfunctional. after all , he 𝚑𝚊𝚜 been going after the people he sees are quite vulnerable. ❞

THERE WERE CERTAIN THINGS HE DIDN’T KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT, and other things he was still learning about with experience. Death and pain are a big one right now. He shouldn’t have to know how to deal with these at this age, and yet he was thrusted into this deadly adventure that wasn’t quite over yet. It helped to think of this as some sort of Dungeons and Dragons game, naming what they came across as creatures they represented. But, this wasn’t a game. This wasn’t pretend. This was real. THOSE QUESTIONS MIKE HAD ASKED WERE ONES HE THOUGHT OF long before. Really, this had nothing to do with them. It was bigger than them, “ It’s probably because we keep getting in the way. We are making ourselves the target, ” which was true to a point, “ And then, the gate was opened up here in Hawkins, ” he shrugged his shoulders, “ But, I dunno if we’ll fully know the reason why. We just have to finish it before things get… too out of hand. ”
