So it’s a tricky balancing act at the moment with the tech business Hubinto... - Good news; we have the prototype and speaking to potential investors. - The bad news; because we are not developing any more at the moment, my tech lead is (and completely understandably) having to look for other work and can’t guarantee his availability if/when we get investment. He is after all and always has been a contractor. - It’s sad as it could mean the permanent parting of ways. - And of course being a tech business I need techies 👩‍💻 👨‍💻 so it leaves me in a vulnerable position. - I always offered my tech lead a stake, but he only ever wanted to be a contractor and if it took off would come on board. That’s great but I think I need more blood...I’m thinking i need a tech lead who is invested in the project and has skin in the game! - Any small business is always vulnerable to loss of personnel but sometimes these scenarios force you to think, reevaluate and move forward. What’s the alternative anyway? Give up and roll over? So here is Will and me having a beer and chatting business...actually we had a cup of tea first as we were so cold! Anyway it got me thinking 🤔 - From someone who has built a business on their own and who is now building a media agency with a great team of cofounders, I can tell you it’s a very different experience. - There is never going to be a definitive one is best, but building something with others who have skin in the game, who you can bounce off and who are aligned with your goals is a refreshing change. - Don’t forget being a boss who doesn’t have a cofounder is a lonely and thankless task, but that’s what you sign up for. It takes very good interpersonal skills and a strong team ethic to make it work. This is one of my traits, but even I don’t get it right all the time. - Also don’t forget you won’t have all the answers or the skills. Yes you can employ someone who does, but the challenges of recruiting good people is a tricky task. One thing this tech project has taught me is I’m the one that has to drive it...no one else. - It’s on me and has to be on me. - People let you down, lose faith, lose energy, and ultimately aren’t prepared to walk the hard yards that you have to. - Unless someone has skin in the game, to be fare why should they care as much as you. - Whatever your project, just remember when it’s always exciting day you often only see the good bits. But that’s the easy and good part. - Often a difficult and challenging project will push you to your limits and make you sometimes question your own motivation. - So remember it’s ALWAYS ON YOU...no one else. You’ve got to be prepared to drag a project along, do the hard yards and be prepared to go to war. That is if you want to realise your dreams. - So if you are a startup founder, or thinking about doing something for yourself. Enjoy the journey and enjoy the ride and I wish you all the best... - It’s a journey and an experience not many people will ever go through. So Adam Tobin a local lad kindly popped down to Bideford rugby club and not only showed us his bronze medal at the recent youth Olympics but also helped with our warm up...it was amusing seeing us Vets try and stretch like Adam 🤣 - It goes to show achievement and success in any walk of life can be achieved in every corner of the country. So I had an awesome day with my little guy Max...he is 6 by the way. We got outside washed the car, sprayed each other with the hosepipe, made dens in the woods, rolled big logs down a field and generally just mucked about. - It was a brilliant... - I didn’t have my phone to distract me and we had some real quality time. - It definitely helped me to realign and I’m so pleased I grabbed that opportunity. - That’s it...just wanted to help you remember to appreciate those little moments. Accept it...don’t let it affect you and keep moving forward... - I’ve had a great day today but also experienced a doubter!...let me explain: - We signed up a couple of new clients for Barr Media today a top hair salon @saltbraunton and an influencer in the health and well being sector. - I met with an investor and chatted about Hubinto...it was great he completely got the concept, was fascinated about the idea and under stood the challenges that I face. - Of course we’ve got to run through some more granular details another day. - So great day. - Now where I don’t let knock backs stop me and why you shouldn’t either... - So I’m planning an email marketing campaign for @barrfinancial and focused on bringing a huge amount of value to estate agents with data and insights at the forefront of local markets. I’m trying out with a small user group to effectively test it and then maybe roll it out to a much bigger audience. - Anyway I had a typical ‘nah not for me’...which is fine.... - I understand no matter how good an idea i think it is, any individual might not like it...and that’s okay... - For me the market not an individual will be the deciding factor. Life is a competition and it doesn’t matter what you are doing! - You should have this mindset no matter who you are or what your doing. If you are an employee, you’ve got to fight to prove your worth, your pay rise, your job, your aspirations....you’ve got to stop thinking that your somehow entitled to something. No one owes you shit! - And for you business peeps and wannabe entrepreneurs, your in a fight to be better everyday, to win more clients, do things better and up your game. - My two young boys are constantly competing too! I’m sure those of you who have kids know what a pain this can be! - I think sport is such a good analogy for life and work. I used to play rugby at quite a high level and of course when you are playing it’s a competition. No team is ever going to give you an easy win. You always have to battle and fight for it. - It’s no different in life, business, relationships...you’ve got to fight to make things work and win. - But it’s easy to say this of course. Life is tough and just like sport it doesn’t come easy and just like sport...you will lose. So get used to it. - I don’t win all the time, and the truth is, it hurts when we don’t win.
