Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz used the phrase to describe the fierce fighting during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He famously stated, "Among the Americans Serving on Iwo Island", uncommon valor was a common virtue." This historic quote is engraved on the base of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

I took this picture in 2010. It is known as the Rose Garden. The Rose Garden has been annihilated with concrete.

DSC_0347 - Winter Sunrise at 72 Degrees North Latitude.

The sun only gets barely over the horizon during dark months at 72 degrees North Latitude. In "Winter" the sun doesn't get above the horizon at all.

DSC_1738 - Train Station Kleine Scheidegg Switzerland.

There is a train station located in Zurich International Airport in Zurich Switzerland. A train runs from the airport station through Lucerne and Interlaken Switzerland leading to the Kleine Scheidegg station. From here there is a "lift" that proceeds to the highest point in Europe known as the Jungfraujoch.

I have pictures of all of these locations on this website. It is one of the most interesting places on the European continent.

Rachmaninoff: Élégie in E Flat Minor, Op. 3, No. 1 (1892).

This piece begins with mournful, melancholic melody, always moving on the off-beat, that gradually builds in intensity in 3rds and 6ths. A warm, comforting melody wells up from the bass at (2:22) and slowly builds to a soaring climax (3:17). The music crashes back down to earth and almost dies out, before the first theme re-emerges, even more beautiful and sad than before (4:16). It concludes with one last struggle and a final collapse (5:25).
