I’m crying, this article is just the ramblings of a lunatic... a violently cat-hating lunatic who’s just pissed that she can’t find a girlfriend that doesn’t have a cat. She’s so bitter, I’m almost mad -- I want to personally track down every cat she’s ever had contact with and give them some proper love and attention. Mixed Monday Special: Topaz Breed

The Topaz is a very new blue eyed cat breed which is in development by Iryna Merzlenko in the Ukraine. It currently has experimental status with the WCF.

Blue eyed cats with very little or no white fur at all are usually very rare, but that’s exactly the goal of this breed. Thanks to a dominant blue eyed gene these cats can have any coat colour and still have striking blue eyes. Odd eyes with at least one blue eye are acceptable according to the breed standard as well.

As the breed is still so young the genetics behind the blue eyes have not yet been fully uncovered. It seems that homozygous cats whith large amounts of white increases the possibility of deafness. It also seems to produce extremely unusual markings and white distributions (see examples below).

I was just reading about these the other day! I’ve seen similar cats under a breed called “ojos azules” (Spanish, literally meaning ‘blue eyes’) and I think they’re essentially the same thing? What a cool mutation

Definitely not much like the ojos azules mutation, actually. The ojo azules mutation wasn’t tied to any white patterns and was homozygous lethal. I say ‘was’ as the project appears to be on its last legs. This could prove a very promising replacement for the grail cat that is the blue-eyed solid if the white patterning can be reduced. That will slash the rate of deafness, too - just getting color on the head reduces that.

Very interesting indeed. The white patterning is a challenge, but lethality is arguably a bigger one, so perhaps the dream will realize.
