thinking about basil hallward and his relationship with religion. the fact that he’s the only(?) explicitly religious character in the book. the way his reaction to the corrupted painting is so inherently tied to religion—he urges dorian to pray and repent. and yet. despite his religion. he so specifically uses the word “worship” about dorian ALL the time. he worships dorian. dorian was made to be worshipped. “i worshipped you too much. i am punished for it.” idk something something idolatry and false gods and religious guilt and homoerotic yearning and being on your knees to worship someone anyways i’m going fucking insane!!

i think one of the major flaws of the 2009 dorian gray movie is that you wouldn't guess that basil is deeply in love with dorian up until the point where they're making out and explorin each other.

however in the book, obviously without any such in-your-face scenes, you can absolutely tell, from the first page on, that he is completely head over heels which makes their end all the more tragic.

so like if a book written in 1890 is able to be more explicit about one man being in love with another than a movie made in the 21st century then you know ur not very capable as a screenwriter. i don't think they should not have included that scene but yknow, for that one at least, they could've had some more apparent build up IMO.
