lil sketch dump - Athena, Ares, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon
More explorations coming soon. I have decided to make a height chart of the Olympians in order to force myself to design them. And I figure it will be handy for future projects.
love it when i talk about a character with someone else and i gradually realize that actually they don’t get the character and lowkey refuses to and borderline hates the character like okay wellllll. let’s stop talking.
Zeus and Hera - for the line up

The year is 1217 BCE. There's battle tomorrow and your mom just commissioned you a fine set of armor from Lord Hephaestus. Youve been staring at the bloated corpse of Patroclus for 19 hours straight
Basil was part of the problem alongside Henry by the way. He loved the stagnant idealized idea of Dorian he built in his head and romanticized as an artist. Henry told Dorian that his only worth to other people was his beauty and Basil was right there proving his point. Even when shown the portrait Basil was in denial that after all these years of life apart there was any hint of darkness or depth in Dorian beyond his youthfully angelic, unmarred by the world, perfect pretty appearance. That there could be any hint of hell in the person he elevated to be above a real person. As flat and eternally beautiful as a painting.
"Lord of the silver bow, now hear my prayer! Great guardian of Tenedos and Chryse and sandy Cilla! Mouse Lord! If I ever built temples to your liking, ever burned fat thighs of oxen or of goats for you, fulfill this prayer for me, and let the Greeks suffer your arrows to avenge my tears!" (Homer. Iliad, trans. wilson)

Angst time-
i love when tragedies are like “the love was there. it didnt change anything. it didnt save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the love was there”

one of the most refreshing elements in Trials of Apollo is the lack of insufferable lecturing and overexplaining about its themes. it’s a corny, delightful story about love, redemption and the inherent wonder of humanity. apollo still drowns his evil ex because fuck that guy.
Kid chibi I did while messing around in a different program. Look at him go.

basil hallward is so often framed as the moral opposite of lord henry but that reading feels way too comfortable.
like yes basil cares about dorian in a way lord henry very obviously does not but the way he cares is not actually harmless.
basil doesn’t just love dorian. he idealizes him to the point where dorian stops being a person and starts being a kind of living artwork.
the portrait isn’t just about dorian’s soul. it’s about basil projecting himself onto dorian and then being afraid of what that projection reveals.
henry objectifies dorian through language and philosophy turning him into a kind of experiment. but basil objectifies him through worship which is quieter and feels more sincere but still strips dorian of agency in a different way.
and the wild part is basil knows this. he literally says the painting shows too much of himself which means he understands that his love is tangled up in ego and possession. he just frames it as purity instead of control.
so dorian ends up caught between two people who both refuse to see him as a full human being.
henry pushes him toward experience and excess. while basil freezes him into this perfect untouchable ideal. neither of them actually lets dorian just exist.
which makes basil less of a moral center and more of a different kind of danger. not corruption through indulgence but corruption through idealization.
and honestly it makes his fate feel less like random tragedy and more like the collapse of something that was unstable from the beginning.
Old illustrations for the coursework. I chose Dorian's favorite
