“What do you consider yourself then, if not whimsical?” Phineas thought that whimsical was an accurate word to describe Basil, at least today. He knew that he didn’t exactly have much ground to stand on, knowing how out of touch he could be. A by-product of his upbringing, having a foot half in two (or three) different worlds and being allowed to run around as freely as he had. There were still things that he didn’t know, that people looked at him strange when he admitted. When he told them that he’d grown up in a lighthouse on an island they tended to give him a bit of slack.
“Word does travel fast.” Phineas agreed. “No. I mean I told my sister and she laughed. But I wasn’t exactly going to tell my students. It didn’t seem like a good idea to encourage them. Seems like it would be breaking rules.”
“Are you making fun of my clothes, Isaacs? Because I would like to remind you that you’re the one that picked out your wardrobe, so that is entirely your problem.”
“Fun,” he replied with a shrug. Whimsy was for people that were weird and he wasn’t that weird. Not the way that some people were at least. He tilted his head to the side and looked around the fair. No one else was dressed like him, but that didn’t mean anything. “Besides isn’t whimsy unpredictable? I’m at least predictable.” And also he wasn’t much of a playful person either. He knew that he was the way he was because of the way he was raised. He was supposed to be like this, but it made things more fun, he thought. “Anyways, I think I’m fun, not whimsy. All us writers are dramatic.” He shrugged.
“Well that’s rude. I’m pretty sure my sister would be grossed out.” But he hadn’t spoken to her in a while and it was awkward. “I would never laugh at you.” That wasn’t in his nature. “Besides, I’d kiss you.”
“No! I’m not making fun of you. Really. They look good on you. On me, sweaters don’t look that good. I didn’t pick out my wardrobe. Not all of it, that was mostly my mother.” Back when he lived at home at least. “I only wear blue.”

“I’ll be right back with your order, sir,” Ciara called out as she walked away, still using her customer service voice. Damn, she had really hated working food service, but she had had to pay for college. It didn’t help that she couldn’t even eat the food. Thank god her teaching assistantship now, just one of the many things better about grad school. She made her way to the coffee shop attached to the library and ordered a black coffee with little hassle, returning to the customer not even five minutes later. “Here you go: a large plain black coffee.”
Honestly, he needed to get better about not partying and staying out too late so he didn’t have to write last minute. But the problem was that wasn’t as fun. He lived to be a bit chaotic and on the edge. It was more fun that way. And none of his professors seemed to notice, so what was the point of changing if it was just going to be unnoticed anyways? He typed away on the paper, waiting for the coffee that would give him a second wind. There wasn’t much for him to finish. “Thank you so much!” he said, taking a huge gulp of the coffee. At least he was being nice about it.

Sage made a comically disgusted look. “Ew no. I can’t even watch TV without seeing straight men. I mean, I like straight guys, but maybe I’m also jealous you got to kiss more lesbians than me.” While the Isaacs got no straight children, Sage wasn’t as loud and proud as her twin. But Basil’s openness with his sexuality had helped her come to terms with hers. “As a bi, a lesbian kiss with me would count double.” She held up two fingers. Oh, he was sad about that. “No, I’m not mad at you,” she said quickly, waving her hands. She really wasn’t mad at him, as Basil had done nothing wrong. She just kept putting off spending time together because she was afraid of it becoming awkward…like it was right now. “It’s just…yeah I have been busy. But we should hang out more. For real.”
He didn’t write books about subjects he didn’t know about, so he wasn’t going to write books about straight people. “Cheek kisses don’t count, kiddo.” And most of them had been cheek or forehead kisses. “And no, it doesn’t count double for you just because you’re bi. Lesbian kisses should count more for me because they’re like the only kisses I get.” Which was actually far from the truth, except he wasn’t going to talk about that with his sister. “Besides, you at least have a chance with double the amount of people. I don’t.” He shrugged. It was awkward, but that wasn’t his fault. It wasn’t as if he expected anyone to stand up for him. He had to do that for himself. He always had. He sighed and looked at his sister. “Yeah, just text me whenever you’re free next. You have my number. I’ve... got to you know. Actually, work the booth now.”

“Sure.” Ciara wondered if he actually liked black coffee or was just trying to sound tough. People have a weird thing about drink choice–especially for alcohol– making you cool or not. She didn’t like black coffee herself, and by the time you added enough milk and sugar to make it taste good it made her vampire digestive system unhappy. Ciara raised an eyebrow but did not comment on the stack of bills. She just grabbed it without counting; it was definitely enough to cover the cost of the coffee and then some. Oh, she sure did believe this rich white boy knew how to bullshit. As she went back to her nearby table to pack her stuff up before heading to the cafe, she commented, “Believing it doesn’t make it not bullshit.”
He had always liked his coffee black and a lot of people looked at him funny for it. Baz figured it was probably because he was from a city known for places with shitty coffee. It’s what he was used to. It helped wake him up at least. “Thank you,” he said, leaning back in his chair a bit. Like most dragons, he tended to hoard money. Honestly, he sort of needed to not be so obvious. Wyvernhoard was coming up soon though and he’d probably get some cash from that. Hopefully, it wouldn’t be awful and he could just avoid his family the entire time. “Yeah, well, that’s fine.”
GARGOYLE: Do you believe that all species deserve to be protected?
“Sure, they do, but my dad can rot in hell for all I care.”
SKYWALK: If you could travel to any time period, when would you go and why?
“Are you kidding me? I can’t believe you’re even asking me that question, as if the answer wasn’t obvious. I’d want to meet my idol. The bard himself, Shakespeare. I think that’s a bit obvious, right?”

Sage grimaced again. While no situation had been as bad as Basil being kicked out, anytime Dad yelled made Sage just shut down. She felt another wave of guilt for feeling bad when she wasn’t even the one in trouble. “We can do with some more gay novels. Wow, that’s really cool. Good luck on that.” She sent her brother an awkward thumbs up of support. She had to show Baz that she supported his decisions. “Sure, I’ll let that count though I could argue that those kisses cancel out.” She accepted the hug and squeezed a bit hard. “No? I’m just seeing the fair…” Sage wasn’t quite sure what he was getting at, but talking to him was now more important than eating cupcakes with her friends.
Basil did not want to admit he was struggling, but he was. He just was not going to give anyone in his family the satisfaction that he was having a difficult time. Even if he was happier for being away from his dad. He didn’t miss the yelling or the anger that he didn’t want to join the dragon guard. Basil missed his mom and Sage. “Well, what else am I going to write about? Straight men? No way. And also why?” He refused to write books about something that didn’t understand. “Wait why would they cancel out? Just because they’re lesbians? But I’m their people.” He let out a little laugh. Okay honestly, they probably didn’t count, but he counted them. “I’ve... barely seen you since the semester started. You mad at me or something?”

“I don’t think it’s a lack of imagination.” Phineas said, thinking of the art installation he’d passed early on in the afternoon. He wasn’t quite sure what it’s message was, but it was incredibly unique and imaginative. Certainly not something that he would have come up with, or would ever forget. He rather wished that he hadn’t seen it. “Maybe it’s that you don’t share the same sense of whimsy.”
“ That’s appreciated on both accounts. Oh, you’ve been going around telling them, have you?” Phineas hadn’t made a big deal out of it, considering how reluctant his presence at the booth was to begin with. But it made sense to him that Basil would spread the word about his own shift.
Phineas laughed at Baz’s dramatics, taking a couple different photos. After inspecting them he sent the most pathetic one off to his Ma. “That might be a step too far. She’ll think you need an entire new wardrobe.”
“No, it totally is. Everyone is boring in comparison to me. Well, okay not everyone, but most people.” He could help but laugh a little bit. No one could confuse Baz with someone boring. “Whimsy? I’d hardly consider myself whimsical.” Or maybe he was and that was the problem. Baz thought that he had a decent imagination.
“No, I’m pretty sure the first lesbian that came up to the booth when I was here has been telling people. They’ve just been coming up to me. I swear I didn’t say anything this time.” He obviously had told people that he was volunteering for the kissing booth and was thankful he’d told a few people, otherwise he was sure that most people wouldn’t have shown up. “Did you not tell people?”
He laughed. “Well, I wouldn’t want her to go through all that work, but I honestly could use a new wardrobe. Sometimes when I’m out partying, people flirt with me. And it’s really sad having to turn down so many people.” He was only halfway joking. “I don’t know how they miss my pride flag. It’s practically pinned on my jacket at all times.”

Sage flinched at his comment. Of course she remembered. Despite his flippant tone, she worried that he was mad at her. Did he blame her for not defending him enough? “Yes, I remember,” was all she could reply to that. Sage didn’t like the idea of soulmates, as she’d rather get to choose her partner than have it be destined somehow. “Are you going to write romance novels?” she asked, trying to show interest in his interests. Sage didn’t enjoy writing, but Basil had definitely always been the creative one. She scrunched her nose in disgust at the image of her brother kissing people. “I’m so glad you’ve been successful.” She threw a five in the jar and stepped forward. “Yeah, we can do a nice little sibling bonding hug?”
He couldn’t exactly fault his twin for acting the way she had when the fight broke out. Baz never really understood why his dad insisted on wanting Baz to join the dragon guard when he had never been interested in that life at all. He never asked for that life. “Ah, yes, I thought so. It was very tough to remember dad screaming at me.” He was better off not being in that environment. “Romance novels? Hardly. Unless they’re like... super gay. I have a book with romance in mind though I wouldn’t consider it a romance. I’ve been working with Professor Armani on an idea for a novel and he says I should go for it.” But he didn’t know if he was going to or not. “Mostly lesbians giving me cheek kisses, but you know that still counts.” He laughed. Baz stepped forward and gave her a hug. “So are you just busy...” he asked, and unlike before the hurt was apparent in his voice.

“That’s true. But you’re the only one who’s currently dressed up in that getup, which makes you the only member of that club.” Phineas had never really seen the appeal in Shakespeare, but he didn’t begrudge Baz that. He wasn’t into the history of lighthouses, but he listened when he went on about that, so Phineas could listen to his friend talk about Shakespeare. Or any of his books, really. “If you pout at the booth you’re just going to scare all of the customers away.” Baz didn’t need to know that Phineas was speaking from experience there. “Classic is one word for it. But that’s now the word that I was thinking, and I’m not sure that anyone else here was thinking it either.” Of course there were some outfits that were even more ridiculous that people were walking around in.
“I’ll be sure to tell her that. Wait, hold on.” Phineas said, pulling out his phone. He opened up the camera, pointing it at Basil. “Now, where’s that pout you were talking about? If I show her this Ma is guaranteed to make you a sweater.”
“Well that’s because people are boring and have no imagination. Like we go to a school with supernaturals. You’d think that someone else would have an imagination.” He was being dramatic and he knew it. Shakespeare was one of his favorite authors that he’d studied in his classes. Part of the reason that he wanted to be a writer was because of all the stories he grew up listening to. Though people weren’t always the best when it came to letting him talk about it. Books... they were his thing. “Noted. I will not pout. I shall also refrain from doing something Romeo would do. I’m pretty sure everyone in the queer community knows I volunteered for this.” And yes, he did dress this way to weird out a certain type of people. It was easier to be weird and deter them than it was for them to get their hopes up that he was interested in women.
“Alright. I will keep that in mind.” He grinned. “Oh, okay. Yeah.” Basil frowned dramatically. “Oh, tell her I dress like this all the time.”

This kid must be rich if he was okay with ridiculously overpaying for a simple favor. Well, Ciara was technically raised rich, in a huge manor with lavish decorations, but that was just a gilded cage. “Of course,” she said in her customer service voice, “what would you like?” Ciara wished she was one of those people that could just pop out a paper without much effort, but she needed to spread writing out over time. Also, the stress of procrastinating until the last minute would be terrible. She told him in a deadpan, “Congratulations. You really have the work-party balance down.” Maybe she shouldn’t antagonize this guy before he paid her, but she just didn’t understand people like him.
Even if he didn’t live with his parents anymore, Basil still had money. Or at least he acted like he did. Really he could have used the money for whatever happened after the school year ended and the dorms weren’t an option to live in anymore. Thank goodness his tuition for school had already been paid. “The largest black coffee you can find.” He didn’t like any of the fancy drinks and had gotten used to black coffee over the last few years. Baz pulled his wallet out and threw a small stack of bills on the table. “Oh, no definitely not that. More like my ability to bullshit is better than most people’s.” He leaned back in his seat. “See the best way to write a paper is to really believe what bullshit you’re trying to spin. Confidence is the key.”

“Well, those are our people, are they not?” Phineas joked, but really it was true, and they’d probably been steering clear of the booth due to the overwhelming- but unsurprising- number of jocks that had signed up. But now that both he and Baz were there hopefully they’d turn up. Phineas had had a pretty slow go of it so far. But Baz was pretty hard to miss in that outfit. “President and only member.” Phineas said, patting him on the shoulder. “Gross. No.” He said, fake gagging. It’s not that Basil was unattractive or anything. But he could never be interested in him, or look at him, like that. “Just seeing how ridiculous you look. Which is a lot, by the way. My little Shakesqueer.”
“Blue, right. I’ll mention it and see what she can do.”
“Well, yeah. Obviously.” Honestly, he would have been all over the booth if he hadn’t been working it because of the jocks. Baz dated, but things often got complicated when he told people he didn’t feel sexual attraction towards anyone. He wasn’t picky about the men he dated dating other people, so really he didn’t understand what the problem was. “I feel like there are way more people in that club than just me. I can’t be the only gay dude that finds Shakespeare fun.” Basil did prefer different classics, but that was beside the point. “Wow, okay. I guess I’ll just pout the rest of the evening,” he joked. They were too similar to date. “Ridiculous!? I don’t look ridiculous. This outfit is classic.” Of course, it was ridiculous, but Baz would never admit that.
“No worries if she can’t of course. I just look very good in blue.”
