Chronicling the process of making a record.
3am thoughts, inspirations, art, audio, film all the stuff that makes the record, the record.
To start with, we journey back to 2020, and the 3rd Bastien Keb record, 'The Killing of Eugene Peeps', out on Gearbox Records.
Four years on and its apparent the record was a commerical flop with streams and sales significantly down after the 2nd record (22.02.85), critically it was my best received record. It got little to no airplay, and is generally forgotten about (even by interviewers).
However it felt like my most complete record, and was the first time I ever really spoke honestly through lyrics. Its still my proudest release.
But after relationship break ups, friends dying, getting older, friends having children and all that life generally throws at you as you enter your mid 30's, my next records (Organ Recital, The Only Angel, Grandamme record) felt like I was slightly going through the motions. Much like a relationship, when as much as the foundation of love is still there, you end up knowing what to do, how to do it etc etc, and it lacks at time a risk factor. You basically just get a little tired.
Although, there is truth in that, it's not the whole story. Some of those records contain what I think are my best pieces of music, some (like The only Angel French narration) contain my deepest and most honest thoughts. But overall perhaps I didn't enjoy the process, perhaps the obsession wasn't present, as it was on 'Eugene Peeps'. Either way, for my next one I would like to document the process. So that's what this is. A document of the making of my next record. They'll be clips, retrospective of previous tracks, references to all the things that go through my mind as I make a record.
