Before anyone so much as assumes that Ginny is bitter that Lockhart is still drawing breath, much less hosting the bloody Ostra Festival after participating in a year of collective faculty incompetency that nearly cost her her life — and did, in fact, cost another student his — allow her to clarify.
Yes. She was incredibly bitter.
She assumed that was quite obvious.
She can remind you more often, if you’d like.
As such, she wasn’t entirely planning on attending the Ostra Festival. Funnily enough, Ginny’s favorite brand of self-indulgent behavior didn’t include the collective and public praising of someone who bartered off their moral compass in exchange for the patent of that blasted occamy egg yolk shampoo. She was planning on taking the high road, for once in their life; skipping this little ordeal and not actively making herself and others miserable by bringing up the misery everyone else had the luxury of forgetting.
Then someone pointed out that if she attended the event, she could count all the mirrors in his house and live contently with the knowledge that his life relies solely on panes of reflective glass. However, she, naturally, realize that she could do far more than just count these mirrors. She could charm them to reflect back varying and slight “imperfections,” that would only get more cartoonish as time went on; a bushy eyebrow slowly knitting together and forming a very pronounced handle bar mustache resting just above his eyelids.
Was this her best work? No, of course not. She wanted to release pixies in every single closet, but Luna pointed out that that they likely wouldn’t be able to find enough pixies to fulfill that task, but that it would be far too cruel to the pixies. Ginny had suggested around a dozen other options, varying in different levels of illegality and immorality, before Luna got her to settle on this option.
Luna had essentially been Ginny’s impulse control since their third year. ( granted, she tried to temper ginny’s fuse before that; however, the two years prior were weighed down with impossibly smooth voices of murderous teenaged would-be war criminals and sleepless nights for ginny to listen to anyone, let alone someone speaking reason. ) It was something that she didn’t particularly enjoy thinking about, given the guilt associated with said impulse control, so rather than addressing a behavior that could be harmful to themself or others, Ginny ignored that little character flaw and places Luna on a pedestal past the point of reason.
You know. As you do when you’re well adjusted and have a firm grasp on healthy coping mechanisms.
She turned to glance at the blonde, from their shared perch on one of the many ornate marble benches outside the sprawling estate. She lifted a hand, brushing away a stray petal that rested on her eyebrow, fallen from the flowers Luna had twisted into her hair. “You should teach me to how to do that, you know. So you don’t keep getting pollen all over your nose and petals in your eye lashes,” they chuckled. “Don’t get me wrong, it looks great on you, as always. I just feel like I should have this skill in my arsenal at this point in my life, you know?”
Her tone, to an outsider, might’ve sounded dry to the point of unkindness; however, in Ginny’s dialect of barely concealed aggression and liberal uses of the word ‘fucker’, this was downright docile. It should be noted, however, that she only ever produced an even slightly soft tone wen she was within the sight-lines of Luna or Neville.
"You want to head inside or are we still stalling? I won’t deck or hex him, or anyone,” she paused, knowing the look she was going to get, “without proper provocation. I can’t be held responsible for my actions if and when he decides to be a prat. But I won’t start anything. Cross my heart.”

Ginny doesn’t talk about it. She doesn’t talk about what happened to her when she kept that sliver of the darkest soul the wix world had ever known tucked against her chest; she doesn’t talk about the blood that she still feels caked under her nails; she doesn’t talk about how she had stay over at the Lovegoods during the summer between that year and the next, asking Luna to go over every single subject they were taught that year because she barely has any memory of what happened that year, much less whatever Professor Sprout was on about; she doesn’t talk about the fact that she failed nearly every Transfiguration exam she sat through during her second year because that bloody fucking diary was on top of her Basics of Transfiguration textbook; she doesn’t talk about the damn near permenant ink stains on her arms because she was too scared to write down her whereabouts or notes or even a passing thought on a piece of parchment that could turn out to be hexed or possessed; she doesn’t talk about the small portion of her paychecks that she saves and transfers to muggle money and anonymously sends to Justin Finch-Fletchly’s mother every year on his birthday; she doesn’t talk about how she’s always a bit too quick to anger, quick to cry, quick to unravel on December 18th; she doesn’t talk about the chilling feeling of marble of the Chamber of Secrets on her cheek that’s never quite gone away; she doesn’t talk about how the sound of that fucking voice still wakes her up in the middle of the night, clutching her neck.
She doesn’t talk about any of it.
After a while, people stop asking. And to them, it’s like nothing ever happened.
two.
The thing is, though, it did happen and Ginny never stopped feeling the impact of everything that happened. Some things are subtle and utterly meaningless to those around them; who really cares if Arthur brings home an inordinate amount of muggle writing utensils that end up going missing? Ginny doesn’t like using parchment anymore and everytime they do, they press far, far too hard to ensure the ink bleeds onto the back of the paper, she can see damn well that her words aren’t disappearing into some void only to haunt her days later.
Not everything is subtle, though. Well. Not everything is easy to sweep under the rug or ignore. Like their temper? Their apparent need to pick fights that don’t have any winners? That was something that was a thorn in everyone’s side.
There was never a moment where Ginny wasn’t afraid of the figures in her dreams, the whispers in her ear, somehow coming back into reality. It shortened the already infamously short Weasley branded fuse; it made her quick to act, quick to swing, quick to curse and hex and shout; it made her insults barbed and punches brutal and hexes even harsher. If someone took half a moment to pause, they might realize it was a child’s plea for help.
The fear eventually gave way to blinding anger and that rage was always barely concealed under freckled skin. It took almost nothing for it to boil into something downright dangerous. Their actions, their responses to being backed into a corner, their reactions when their peers were unfortunate enough to say something against Neville or Luna while she was in earshot were nothing short of brutal, blurring the lines of what was admirable spellwork and condemnation-worthy hexes. Ginny never blinked, never shied away from the violence. In fact, the look in her eye was frighteningly familiar to the look that was always omnipresent whenever that diary was clutched in her hands during her first year.
Her second year onward, Ginny spent a lot of time in detention, following more along the twins’ footsteps than Ron’s or Percy’s. McGonagall got her out of quite a bit of trouble, though Ginny’s still confused as to why that was -- was it because she was Molly’s daughter or Neville’s best friend? Or was it because McGongall, like every other educator in that school, should have seen what was happening to her and did nothing to stop it?
Well, one thing was for sure; it had absolutely nothing to do with Ginny’s bordering on horrendous grades in Transfiguration.
three.
The thing is Ginny Weasley might be a little bit in love with Neville Longbottom.
Soft and self-sacrificing and sweet, Neville was born to be a savior. However, after the Chamber, after Tom, Ginny refused to allow themself to be one of the people he saved. They couldn’t ever repay him for doing everything he did to ensure that they didn’t perish at the hands of Tom Riddle’s ghost, but they can try their best to save him from a world that’s hell bent on trying to kill him.
She remembers the Yule Ball quite well, the moment when people started to assume some kind of connection between the two of them; she remembers, not necessarily romance, but safety and contentment and peace. Most memories with Neville were like that; barring the ones involving child militias and horcrux hunting, which were, granted, a significant portion of their memories together. Regardless, even when they were on the brink of death or she was about to come out of her skin as the hissing sound in her mind kept getting louder and louder, Neville was always able to bring her back down to reality.
She’d die for Neville, she’d kill for him, she’d dedicate her life to keeping him safe, even if it meant losing hers.
four.
The other thing is that Ginny Weasley is absolutely a little bit in love with Luna Lovegood.
Luna was her first friend at Hogwarts, both of them isolated from their peers for vastly different reasons. Ginny’s never quite forgiven herself for not defending Luna when that bloody “nickname” when it first originated. Granted, within their second year, Ginny broke nearly a dozen students’ noses and hexed nearly thrice that many people for spewing hateful rhetoric at Luna, but, still, in Ginny’s mind, that will never be enough.
Luna was always serenity to Ginny, she was always peace, and it was no secret that Ginny was anything but. They balanced each other out, provided perspective that the other might not have noticed. Well, Luna was always good at looking at things in a multi-faceted manner, whereas Ginny’s determination and grit was often replaced by tunnel vision that was damn near impossible to waver. Luna was the reason “damn near” was included in the previous sentiment. She was one of the two people, the other being Neville, that could truly ground Ginny.
five.
The last thing, perhaps the most important thing, is that they’re both far, far too good for Ginny for anything to come of that love. That’s not a “oh, woe is me, I’m not good enough for the person I love.” No. That’s a “these people are the most significant figures in my life and I refuse to complicate it when we all might die in this upcoming war.” There might be a bit she’s leaving off with that statement, such as intense fear of commitment and general enjoyment of living up her Hogwarts reputation of “the girl who dated half the castle,” but that’s neither here nor there.
What actually matters to Ginny is that the two people she cares about most in the world are safe and alive and close enough that she can feel safe and alive alongside them. She has the full expectation that she might die in the war, that she’s not the person that lives through something like this, not after what she did and saw and still hears, not after the blood and ink that she’s been unable to wash off of her hands, nearly a decade after the fact.
She might not survive but she can make goddamn sure that those two do.
BULLETED HEADCANONS that still need to be expanded upon
artistic expression !!
One of the most common ways people, specifically children, are told to process their trauma and cope, in general, is through art and I think that if she wasn’t encouraged to do that by someone, Ginny would have gravitated towards it of her own violation.
I’m not saying that she had a fear of parchment, but I am saying that she didn’t trust that everything she was writing down wasn’t being recorded or stored or would be used to weaponize her thoughts/feelings against her at the drop of a hat; it would make sense for her to want to express herself in a way that might not be entirely understandable to others if the ink were to seep into the page and into the mind of someone else, of someone far more dangerous than she remembered or dreamed.
Her drawings started out dark and angry and sad and extremely abstract -- but those were only the ones that she did on paper. She often drew on her own skin, nicking the little muggle pens and markers that her father somehow brought home to study. She was often known to write reminders of assignments onto her arm rather than on parchment and she was often known to use muggle writing utensils in general during Hogwarts.
Her first actual tattoo, not just done in “permanent ink,” is a stick and poke, days after her fifteenth birthday. It’s a golden snitch, despite the fact that she has zero intention of ever playing seeker after the not even remotely legal scrimmage she and Dean organized during the Triwizard Tournament. Listen, she has access to gold charmed ink and a tattoo gun -- don’t but a bummer and worry about how they got it, it’s fine -- and now they have a golden snitch tattooed on the skin just above their right knee.
Did Ginny start giving people only slightly illegal tattoos with this not at all stolen tattoo gun throughout the rest of their career at Hogwarts? That depends on who’s asking and if they’re going to be a little snitch to Moody or Molly.
tattoos !!
Ginny has designed carefully magicked tattoos for nearly every person in her life; however, instead of offering them to the people that inspired them, she bares them on her own skin. Whether or not the person is aware of this little dedication is solely dependent on what Ginny assumes their reaction will be.
For Tom Riddle ~ A blood soaked quill curling around her left ear. This is probably the only one she regrets getting, because it was, just generally, a horrible idea to get a reminder of that pain etched into her skin. However! She has more than enough of it in her psyche, what’s a tiny token of that on her body?
For her mother ~ A miniature version of the spoon clock at the Burrow, wrapped delicately around Ginny’s left wrist. It’s been charmed to actually tell time, rather than gauge the endangerment of her family. Molly has not been directly told that she inspired this one, but it’s the only one of Ginny’s tattoos that doesn't get a lot of criticism from her.
For Neville ~ Sprawling stalk of dittany on her right shoulder. Was it a bit cliche to get a tattoo of a plant to represent her friend that’s far too attached to Herblogy in her opinion? Probably, yes. Why dittany? Because of the healing properties and general calming presence that the plant gives off when she’s sat with him in the greenhouse throughout Hogwarts.
For Luna ~ Thestral that flies around the surface of her left shoulder. Gentle and beautiful and misunderstood by far too many people; that’s every bit Luna as it is the soft hearted creatures that she was prone to feeding throughout Hogwarts. She had to get Luna to describe this one; so obviously the blonde would be aware of this one
For herself ~ Multi-colored phoenix whose flames and feathers shift in vibrancy in tune with her mood (or, rather, the heat of her skin, but the two are quite intertwined when it comes to Ginny. Ron’s ears aren’t the only ones that tint pink when enraged) on her right thigh.
[ note: none of those are set and stone and more can be added as plotting with other muns progresses. honestly, i would love for her to have ones for all of her siblings, as well as harry and hermione but i didn’t want to assume anything. ]
a very important timeline !!
age 8 / pre-canon ~ stole brother’s brooms and taught herself how to fly/play quidditch
age 11 / first year / cos ~ no quidditch! only trauma, apparently!
age 12 / second year / poa ~ tried out for the team, in… literally every position and made the reserves
age 13 / third year / gof ~ quidditch was canceled but ginny trained in her spare time
age 14 / fourth year / ootp ~ ginny makes the team as a chaser! Yeehaw! there is a chance that she didn’t get a whole lot of time in play because she wasn’t quiet about how much umbridge was a ✨ literal fascist ✨ and spent some time in detention. when / if the twins make their grand exit, ginny finally slides into the position she originally wanted, beater.
age 15 / fifth year / hbp ~ ginny starts as a chaser but before christmas, she’s installed as the team's best beater.
age 16 / sixth year / dh ~ ginny is still playing beater and is the captain of the gryffindor quidditch team.
age 17 / seventh year / post-canon ~ beater, captain ;; both the holyhead harpies and falmouth falcons attempted to recruit her
quidditch (coaching) !!
ginny has always been a very physical person, in that she’s hyper invested in sports and that she would absolutely deck someone before she would hex them. this partially stems from the fact that they were denied access into their brothers games that were often rooted in physically fighting or in quidditch (hence why they taught their damn self how to play) and this partially stemmed from the fact that the voice of tom riddle never fully faded from her mind and when she’s moving, focusing on something else, it’s not so goddamn distracting.
she was recruited by two teams within the british & irish quidditch league but declined both due to ???? depending on if neville got the same kind of media attention as harry did in canon, ginny would Not want to be associated with that and thought that a professional quidditch career would amplify that. also i feel like molly would take EXTREME issue with her daughter being put in a public position that would put her in danger because people have died brutally in quidditch, which is typically exacerbated when someone baits another player into a fight, which ginny has been known to do. It’s also possible that neither of them wanted to start her as a beater which would have infuriated her.
But, obviously, she still cared about the game and wanted to teach other people, specifically young girls, how to play the sport. It started shortly after Ginny graduated from Hogwarts, after she rejected the Falmouth Falcons’ offer to join as one of their chasers. One of the current players approached her about training their daughter in quidditch.
WANTED PLOTS
ft. weasleys
I didn’t write up a complete list for the Weasleys, but I have a lot of opinions on Ginny’s relationship with each of her brothers and her parents. If I listed them all here, this would probably be double the size it already is so if you’re a Weasley mun, please hit me up in the DMs.
ft. dark aligned muses
Ginny’s life has absolutely been impacted by the fact that she lived with a piece of Tom Riddle’s soul in her mind when she was a child and it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the higher ranking Death Eaters were aware of this and wanted to exploit it. Obviously, with the horcrux destroyed, Ginny is not in active contact with Voldemort but without a strong mental barrier (see following plot), Ginny doesn’t necessarily have to know that the voice inside her head that’s only gotten louder since Voldemort’s followers got more and more powerful isn’t something to actually be concerned about.
If someone wasn’t aware of what was happening, it could be interesting to plot out them discovering Ginny’s connection to Voldemort -- her apparent lack of empathy or remorse when it comes to the greater good, all the while having a look that mirrors Tom far more than it mirrors Dumbledore; the fraction of an instant that lacks a response when she hears the word “mudblood,” having been far too desensitized to that particular slur when she was off being the puppet of a future purism-based terrorist leader -- and exploiting that, possibly pushing her into a position where she’s forced to act as a double agent? She’d probably attack someone before she did that, but it could be an interesting dynamic, even more so if they promised to get Tom out of her head for good.
ft. st. mungo healers (or mind magic practitioners)
Mental health is almost never addressed in the series -- which is just ✨ super fucking gross ✨ of Joanne, but so are most things that she did, so who’s surprised, really? -- but given the fact that, in canon, the Longbottoms are at St. Mungos because of psychological distress due to prolonged torture, there is some indication that there is something for wix suffering from issues related to mental health. So! I’m assuming that there’s some level of care there.
Ginny isn’t one to ask for help; but, she’s been dealing with the echo of Tom Riddle for a decade now and every time she’s attempted mind magic to rummage through her memories, she’s ended up on the floor, shaking and scratching at the air. As loath as she is to admit it, she’s terrified to try to do that again without additional assistance. Her first thought is to go to someone at St. Mungos who’s worked with people like Lily and James Potter, survivors of dark magic and torture; however, should that fail, she would seek out someone that might not necessarily be a healer, but was skilled in mind magic of some kind.
ft. the malfoys & honorary malfoys
I realize this plot will not work after reading Draco and Narcissa biographies, you can ignore this but I wanted to include it purely because I want everyone to know that Ginny will happily rock Lucius Malfoy’s shit without warning and I find that very sexy of them.
I know this is a very limited plot because it would only involve Draco and/or Narcissa, but I think it could be really interesting. It would, also, very much going to hinge on if Ginny was made aware of who gave her the diary and what Lucius is up to, but I, personally, would LOVE for Ginny to have known because I enjoy the drama of it all. Now I’m not saying that Ginny has ever attempted to kill Lucius Malfoy but she certainly has several bones that she’s publicly picked with him. Has she ever hexed him? Swung at him? Probably. She’s absolutely spent some time in Ministry custody because of it but she fully maintains that her actions were worth it.
I can’t imagine that she and Narcissa would ever interact that much so I doubt this would impact her at all, but I think any sort of dynamic between Ginny and Draco would be fascinating, because Ginny absolutely projected everything that Lucius did and I can’t imagine her finding him remotely tolerable. But, pending the mun’s connection to canon Draco’s occlumency skills, there might be a reason for her to play nice with him unless she’s able to get her hands on someone who can help her that isn’t the spawn of bleach haired satan.
