Fur and Gold Demo: Circle Song I wrote this for and about my French friends Jeanne and Spleen, and remember asking my French cousins to help me translate the English lyrics I had written into something poetic. I think the translation came out quite childlike and I like that… it’s a song about a little knight and his horse, about friendship and community.

Wow, I still can’t quite believe my baby Fur and Gold is 20 years old this year. Feeling proud that my debut album became exactly what I wanted it to be creatively, pure and instinctive... That time in my life was incredibly special, and seeing how the record continues to resonate and what it still means to you touches my bat lightning heart in ways you’ll never know 🖤

The 2025 remaster is available now on all streaming platforms, as well as on vinyl and CD.

This artwork for Tahiti and What’s a Girl To Do is taken from the little lyric booklet we made around the release of Fur and Gold… I wrote and drew every single lyric by hand.

Fur and Gold Demo: Blood Red Shoes This was quite a jazzy strange little song. I was experimenting with my sonic palette and what I liked and didn’t like, ahead of the fur and gold songs… it helped me refine the world of Bat for Lashes to try different sounds out.

This is the beginning of Seal Jubilee and the original notebook in which I scribbled the ideas, the lyrics. This song reflected on the cycles of birth and death inherent in a long term relationship.

I was dreaming about the sea for many years at this point, and so the metaphor of the sea, the realm of emotions, and all the animals helped to make perfect sense of what I was feeling…

The ‘Prescilla’ music video has been remastered ˚˖𓍢ִ໋ 🦇 ✧˚.🔮⋆ Shot in LA in 2006, and partly filmed in the original Batman cave, we went for a surreal take on domestic chores and childhood portals… hungry armchairs, magic daggers, glittery sacrifices and killer vacuum cleaners ensued!

Fur and Gold Demos: Dark Time This song is so sweet and nostalgic for me. Again, a mixture of tacky midi sounds and guitar, I produced this at home, bringing in glocs and thunder sounds and was developing the early bat sound.

Fur and Gold Demos: Rosie Rosie was one of the early Bat for Lashes songs that I played live in Brighton during the few years leading up to signing my first record deal. I used a walking shoe sample for the beat, even though I really wanted a tap shoe sound… this was as close as I could get!

Fur and Gold Demos: Healing Fire Using my Yamaha sequencer and for the organ and beat sounds, I played my sunburst Telecaster over the top. Healing Fire is about meeting the devil at the crossroads, about a dark night  of the soul, and calling for redemption
