i've never been this emotionally wrecked by a tv show in all my life. bobby nash was my comfort character. bathena were my comfort ship. with both of them being taken away, it has well and truly destroyed me.
athena was a character who, at the beginning, was very closed off. very to herself. and bobby helped her open up. helped her to soften and to find peace in the world and in herself again. and all i can think of is how now, without bobby, she will just go back to that person. cut away from everyone and everything. the 118 who had become as much of a family to her as they did to bobby. her children who loved bobby as much as their own father, knowing that she won't be able to look at them without thinking of him and how much he loved her kids. athena is just as gone as bobby and that breaks my heart.
this was the worst decision any writer/director could have done for a show and it will be one that i will never forgive, no matter the outcome. the last four days have been hell on earth and i truly am heartbroken at what has happened because of it.
to ignore the wishes of the cast? to brush aside one of the most generous and talented actors of this generation for 'creative direction' is absolutely insane. none of them wanted peter to leave and peter himself would rather have stayed which only makes this even harder to accept.
you wanted to get rid of a character? fine! bobby would've loved to retire. he would've loved to stay at home all day, baking, cooking, gardening, picking up new hobbies. he would've loved to go fishing or volunteering at various different shelters, helping people considering that's what he does best.
but most of all, bobby nash deserved to live. he deserved to have the peace he has fought eight seasons to have and for that, i will never forgive the way it has panned out.
and to peter, please know you are and will always be so loved by the 9-1-1 fandom and we'll miss you so very much.
Is there something that we should know about what’s in there? No, just some old files, Christmas decorations, stuff like that. [Fireworks explode] Okay, you wanna try again? ‘Cause your taxes seem a lot more exciting than mine.
Athena practically on Bobby’s lap, the shirt grab, and that hand on his chest 🙂↔️ i love for these details (even though the ship arc was a little 😶🌫️)
—for the lovely @batsyspooks who pointed these out to me 😘—
i need a christmassy bathena fic where they're baking and bobby puts his flour covered hands on athena's ass, marking her without realising and either May and Harry or the 118 has to point it out
9-1-1 fans and their racism, microaggressions, & misogny
in defense of athena grant-nash
first things first, if anything you read here sparks argumentative or negative feelings, i don't care. if you respond to this like a hit dog hollering, i. do. not. care. before you reply, i want you to evaluate why what i said made you upset. is it because you have a genuinely good contrary point or did i say something to make you reevaluate YOU and YOUR life and how YOU interact with media? evaluate why you have such a visceral reaction to athena and anything she does
oh and spoilers for 9-1-1, all seasons, all episodes
athena grant-nash is an amazing complex character that gets so much hate for no reason that can be explained without some racist shit thrown in. now, i don't think not liking athena makes you any of these things, however if any examples below are used in your defense of your dislike, and you can't stand on it without any points i made, think about that.
athena is not allowed any grace ever, but especially not now in her grief when it would be most. 9x01 came out with a 6 month time jump and harry and may -- athena's kids -- opening up to her about how they feel like when bobby died, she left too. understandable on all sides, yet athena immediately got backlash. they called her a terrible mother, etc,etc and for the life of me i can't understand why ?
yes, everyone lost bobby, but athena truly believed that she would be able to spend the rest of her life with bobby, the love of her life, yet their time was cut short in the most insane way. should athena be closed off in her grief, especially from her children ? no. does athena deserve grace because this is the third loss of hers romantically and the second she's lost to death ? yes. bobby was her person, her safe space.
none of you would say this about meredith when she lost derek. or bobby if he had lost athena instead.
on the topic of emotions, when have we EVER seen athena really work through her feelings, cry, breakdown, allat with anyone OTHER than bobby. in 9x01 when she tells hen "i want to talk to him" she doesn't mean that lightly.
this fandom doesn't give her space to grieve her HUSBAND but i constantly see tweets about "oh buck, chim, hen, eddie" blah blah fucking blah. all of them get grace to do whatever during this time but other times too.
i've said it once (not on this specific app) and i'll say it again: the way y'all talk about athena is racist and rooted in microaggressions (really macro tbh and most of you are buddies, i'll get to that tho) but YOU don't see that way because 'hen is your favorite character' 'you just love karen' 'may is my pretty princess' liking 3 black characters doesn't absolve you of being weird and racist toward another one the same way having black friends doesn't mean you aren't and can't be racist.
-- calling her awful and evil (user buckleypie on twt, fucking weirdo) during her grief because she didn't want to hear chim's apology OR be burdened with his or the 118's guilt and grief is rooted in racism. black women are always expected to be there for everyone, deal with their issues and problems yet ignoring their own...athena didn't have the mental nor emotional capacity for that and that doesn't make her a bad person, it makes her human.
-- on the topic of humanity, this fandom expects her to be perfect in a way that's not expected by white character or even hen and it's bizarre. athena is put on this pedestal, she's not allowed to make mistakes, she's not allowed to react out of anger. she has to be nice to your favorite character. everyone gets grace except athena. she can’t be flawed on imperfect. remember when hen cheated on her wife ? eddie's son got sick of his terrible parenting so he went to another state ? buck...being buck but in a negative sense ? *oh they didn't mean it, they had to grow, to learn and blah blah fucking blah x2*
-- "athena's a bad cop, she abuses her power" but when she allowed buck to inject himself in her investigation to help and save maddie, none of you said this. when she didn't arrest buck for literally anything he did in season 1 (or ever) and told bobby to give him another chance, she wasn't doing that then. you don't get to pick and choose.
so many of you are also svu stans and would NEVERRRR say this about olivia benson, would even defend her when the show itself calls out the many times she's done it. and on maddie, of COURSE she deserved the help, but it was thanks to athena, that she didn't have to deal with the repercussions to what would have happened if buck had been arrested and charged on top of her trauma.
-- "she was homophobic in season 1" athena not wanting michael to bring the man he cheated on her with (after 15 years of marriage mind you) around their kids and into their lives so quickly is not homophobic. when athena said "if he cheated on me with a woman, no one would expect me to smile" and she was right. "she told michael to go back in the closet so they could stay married" athena's parents are still married and from her own words, she's ashamed of divorce because of the stigma around it, especially for black women. plus...we've met her mother. also, not wanting the divorce to impact the kids negatively or wanting her to just change is normal, is she right for telling him to "forget it" no but this is a conversation with nuance...something you all lack.
-- ''athena's a bad parent" you stan eddie diaz, your point is moot and invalid immediately, be so fucking forreal. cause if we're talking bad parenting then he takes the fucking cake. athena is overbearing and from a daughter's perspective -- a little annoying but it's all love. "she hit harry" something that was completely wrong and i don't defend her for, she was wrong, and from the reactions of EVERYONE was something completely out of character, but the shit that spawned from that? oh i'll never forget the "abusive parent athena" tweets and fics that spawned, like i know what you are. cause i often wonder: if eddie hit chris, would he defended? and you know what, he probably would which is sooo crazy to me.
-- lastly, let's talk buddies "you can't generalize a group of people because of a few bad apples" don't be daft or obtuse. it NEVER fails, NEVER i mean if i had a nickel for every time i click on the most outrageous tweet about athena, it's a buddie stan. the racism, the microaggressive tones, and so much more are expected if i see diaz, buckley in relation to buck, buckleydiaz or ryan guzman in the pfp -- in character or not -- anyone in the profile. NEVER FAILS. and i KNOW i'm right because for soooo many of you, ryan's racism wasn't enough for yall to not stan or thirst over him, it took homophobia and transphobia for y'all to lock in and that's sooo bizarre. THAT tells me all i need to know.
so many of yall are misogynistic too, you hate women and if you identify as a woman, unpack that. i saw a tweet that said "if buck were a woman, buddies would hate him" and so many are saying "no cause then they would be canon" which really proves their point. if buck were a woman, you would see him as a plot device because he's with the "hot" man and not a nuanced character with arcs and feelings and that's how y'all treat athena. as a means to an end.
oh and to all the buddies and other ppl who have said "i'm tired of the show being about athena/bobby/bathena" remember that without angela and the concept of athena, NONE of your ships would exist.
to conclude this: so many of you are white people who've never had to think about nuance and intersectionality when it comes to black people, because it doesn't affect you and you don't care. you say you do, you tweet like you do, but when you're faced with a black woman (a fictional one at that) who doesn't live up to YOUR standards of what she should and shouldn't do or who she should and shouldn't be, you turn on her and act like she's the devil incarnate. UNPACK YOUR RACISM AND FIGURE OUT WHY YOU TURN INTO YOUR DEMONIC ANCESTORS WHEN YOU SEE ATHENA
p.s: y'all use hen as a token character to combat the racism and misogyny you spew toward athena and other women on the show but we’ll unpack that later
