The reason it’s Jo and not Brick is because she is set on finding a “manly” partner (since she finds it more beneficial to the game and she was raised to search for such things), so she got a bit shocked when Brick showed his effeminate side while Jo is more manly, making her question everything she knows about sexuality as she likes Jo more, while she only saw Brick as a friend at the very most that she could use to win, genuinely caring about Jo and having an actual bond.

Her parents are strict Catholics as well as herself, which is why she feels so conflicted.

Brick felt obligated to date Piper since she gave him “orders” to, so he did his best to act chivalrous because of that and his own moral code.
