Cubby Clark’s life is falling apart. My Thoughts 🦇
Mazey Eddings excels at a great many things within her writing. Among them: the balance between internal and external struggle, with a mental health focus uniting the two. While touring for Well, Actually, Mazey Eddings discussed the toll social media can have from a creative standpoint. I'm glad she had the chance to express and explore how social media has impacted her through Cubby's story. Hopefully, it's a reminder to readers as well: the people behind our favorite art forms are, in fact, people, with human emotions ("It’s the price of putting your art out there, when it’s all said and done. You aren’t a human; you’re the product you made, being rabidly consumed."). They can get hurt by our commentary; it can take a toll on their mental health, self-esteem, and identity, seeking that validation. You Won't Forget me isn't just a reminder of that: it's a cautionary tale.
Honestly, I'm a little too connected to Cubby and Darcy's story (practice kissing, let's not talk about it, a sexual awakening, the friends-to-lovers growth). It's messy and complicated and SO. REAL.
Cubby sees "the colors of the song" and relates them to Darcy's hair -- what feels like a stunning callback to Tilly in Technicolor. There's a callback to Well, Actually, too ("One did fairly well, an appearance on an internet show where he ate hot dogs with an incredibly hot host.")
