Bawlin’
Almost 3 years ago to the date, I set out to shoot my first short film with the help of friends, family, and the kindness of strangers. And even though at the time I already had several years of production experience under my belt, I still had no clue what I was doing. I didn't hire a line producer to help me with finances because our budget was already limited, but in retrospect I probably should have. Not only were we able to crowd-fund our goal, we surpassed it and STILL went way over budget finishing the film. At least 3K came out of our own pockets after all the money we raised was spent. In the end, we were broke. So broke. No but seriously, I've never been more broke in my adult life and that's real.
Over the next 2 years I tried entering the short into as many festivals I could afford to and even paid for a private screening event for my cast and crew all by myself. And when it didn't get accepted into any of the festivals I had set my heart on, and realized it didn't make any sense to keep spending money on it, I will admit, I threw the towel in. I was disappointed. I gave up. Worst of all, I no longer had the money to fulfill the perks I had promised our donors, and that guilt ate at me until I convinced myself that nobody wanted to see the film, anyway. It's been a long road getting over that personal disappointment, mostly because I really wanted to make everyone that helped make it proud, not doubt my intentions. Alas, I know some of you out there are still waiting. I want to take this moment to personally apologize for that, and for not being better at math. Ironically, this is exactly why I studied TV & Film in college. But I digress...
Last Fall, Nek and I had the privilege to screen Bawlin' to a small slice of fandom at Brittana Con and let me tell y'all, what an amazingly rewarding experience that was. Everyone laughed at every joke and cheered when the credits rolled. I've never been more proud of something I made than in that moment. (Rumor has it we even got a standing ovation but I think I was too overwhelmed at the moment to realize it.) The point is, our little film had found an audience! Our efforts were not in vain after all.
When I set my eyes on a career in television, I did so with the purpose of making sure little girls didn't grow up not seeing themselves represented on their favorite shows like I did. I was already in my teens when I started seeing characters like myself on screen but no one I truly identified with until much later, when Buffy came about. I was in college when I watched Tara die, which was still pretty traumatizing at that age, but I've had more than enough time to grieve and heal from the loss of many beloved characters like her over the years. I also work in TV now, allowing me a unique perspective when it comes to representation which remains my main objective in my creative work. And I hope one day to have a bigger hand on things, to work in development departments and writing rooms, to have an actual say. But until then I realize that I still have a lot to contribute, even if I cannot feed it directly to your TV screens just yet. This short film isn't mine, it belongs to every person that helped me make it, and to the masses I wanted to reach in the first place. For a long time I debated streaming it online for profit, if only to make up for some of our financial losses, but I couldn't in good conscience do that when our donors who already generously gave us the means to make it have been waiting so long to see it.
So without further ado, here is Bawlin', starring Ash Lendzion and Gabrielle Christian. Thank you for helping me make this film. I learned so much about myself in the process. I hope it inspires you to use your voice and create something of your own. This one's for you.

Just to give you guys an idea of how much of a difference your generous donations have made in the making of our little movie, we just re-mixed Bawlin' on the same stage as Showtime's Weeds and Dexter. NBD, right?
Happy Monday!
Teaser posters!
When you guys are done with the short film where exactly will it be available at? :)
We're going to take it around to a few festivals first! Once we're done with that we're planning to distribute the film online for streaming or download. I don't even have a ballpark of when that will be but I will keep you guys updated.
And we're wrapped!
Hey Bawlers!
Just checking in to let our fam know that Bawlin' is officially in post-production. We wrapped last Saturday night after a long but awesome shoot. My mind was blown from the amount of talent in one room and I'm forever grateful that I got to share my first directing experience with such an amazing cast and crew. The amount of support I continue to receive from my peers through this process has been invaluable. I'm learning and growing every day and I seriously cannot wait to share our little movie with all of you!
We will be sharing our new promotional art very soon but in the mean time here's a sneak peek of our editor Tom at work this morning!
We shall tag it #Charen ;)
Lastly, (and I really hate to put a damper on things but this needs to be addressed) it has been brought to our attention that a person by the name of Peyton Pittman has taken to posting false information about our movie on Twitter. As flattered as we are that someone would want to take credit for something they've never even seen, please note that this person is in no way, shape or form affiliated with our movie, cast or crew members. Donating $300 to our fundraising campaign for an "official" credit in order to successfully lie to people isn't cool or fair to the fandom. Furthermore, we reserve the right to honor such credit when blatantly (and rather publicly) abused in this manner. Use common sense.
Deuces.

First recording sesh for Bawlin' dzown! Had fun working with the talented Julia "Track IX" Ramos today.
Ladies and gents, we've just casted our leading "man"! He's a cutie ;)
Sneak Peek: Bawlin' set piece!
A huge CONGRATS to our DP Cristian for having his short film accepted into Cannes!!! We're so very proud of you ;)
Did you get my question about donating after the deadline? I keep trying to send it in, but I'm not sure if tumblr is letting the go through. The page blinks and does weird things.
I did! Please look at our last few entries for info on how to donate now and let me know if you have any more trouble!
For those of you still trying to donate!
We only had a few weeks to gather the funds necessary in order to shoot on time, so we're hearing from a few of you that either didn't hear about it until now or just couldn't donate before it ended. If this is you and you'd still like to contribute, please email us at [email protected] with your donation amount. We will then shoot you an invoice with a link that will allow you to pay via credit card, debit card, or Paypal.
I hope this helps! Thanks once again for your support.

Hey, are you going to be making the DVD, with the behind the scenes available at any point? I donated to the project but couldn't afford enough to donate for that perk.
Distribution may or may not be in our distant future. We'd like to take the film out to festivals before we make that decision. At any rate, the BTS featurette will remain exclusive to donors who made a $50 or higher contribution (it's called a 'perk' for that very reason). But that's not to say that if and/or when we decide to outright sell DVD copies of our film we won't include any BTS footage, it just won't be the same featurette our donors will get along with their perk. We want to reward everyone who has been generous to us (because you're AWESOME) but we also have to keep our promises! I hope this makes sense :)
What if I wanted to donate but didn't get paid until after the deadline. Is there anyway to still contribute to the film?
We're getting a few of these… If people still want to donate, please send us your email address and desired donation amount via ask. I (Gloria) will “invoice” you to your email address and you’ll be able to follow a link where you can pay via credit card, debit card, or Paypal. Hope this helps!
p.s. we will NOT publish your personal email.
Update: Bawlin' shooting schedule
Hey guys! First of all, I wanted to say THANKS once again for helping us not only reach but go beyond our funding goal in less than two weeks. You're all amazing and very special to us. Really can't wait to share this project with you!
A couple of updates...
Shoot Date:
We're officially a month away from shooting our movie! You might have noticed on our campaign page that our shoot date was originally scheduled for March 9th, however, our lovely leading lady Ash Lendzion has been invited to the SXSW premiere of her new movie Spring Breakers in Austin that same weekend. We really didn't want her to miss it, so we've moved our shoot date up one week to Saturday, March 16th. Although this change will make for a much tighter editing schedule, we're still working towards meeting the deadline to submit our film for this year's Playhouse West Film Festival as planned. Please join us in wishing Ash a fun and safe trip to my hometown of Austin, TX! You can shoot her a good luck tweet here ;)
Special new addition to the Bawlin' crew:
We're thrilled to welcome music man extraordinaire John Zelek to our team! As you may have guessed already, music plays a big part in our movie so we've searched high and low for the right person to take on this crucial role. Not only is John a perfect fit for this project, he's already brought great new ideas to the table and we really look forward to working with him and all the talent he has to offer. More importantly, he's just as excited about bringing this story to life as we are! We're blessed to have him and can't wait to share his magic with you all.
Please continue to check this page for more information and progress updates as we go along! Have any questions about our movie? Ask me over on my personal blog and I'll do my best to answer all inquiries privately.
Cheers,
g
THANK YOU!
We've surpassed our fundraising goal in less than 2 weeks thanks to your amazing support!!! We're overwhelmed by all the love and can't thank you enough. Truly. This is a dream come true for us and it means the world that so many of you have come forth to help make it happen. We're very aware that this is your hard-earned cash you've given us and we'll make sure every penny is well-spent.
For those of you still inquiring about getting a DVD copy of our film with the exclusive BTS footage included, there's still time left! Our campaign will continue accepting donations through tomorrow (Friday 15th) at midnight PST. And if you're wondering what's going to happen with the extra money collected, we're already negotiating a deal to use a much better camera thanks to your generous support. So please rest assured that we will spend up to the last penny making our film the best it can possibly be and getting it ready to compete in festivals across the country.
To make a donation before time runs out, please go HERE.
Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH. We wouldn't be where we are today without you! Now let's go make a movie :)
One love,
The Bawlin' Crew
