Writer Liz Ruddy has something to say to people who continue to blame rape victims. In a searing poem she posted on Facebook on Tuesday, Ruddy recounts a real conversation she had with a male co-worker and the thoughts that went through her head. Itâs long, but well worth the read.Â

Ghana To Ban Skin Bleaching Products in August 2016
Colorism, that which privileges lighter skin over darker, is an issue that not only affects African Americans, but pretty much all people of color around the world.
  From India to Compton, Brazil to Belize, one of the ways in which colorism rears its ugly head is in skin bleaching. We have all seen photos where celebrities such as Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa or Nigerian-Cameroonian pop singer Dencia bleached their beautiful brown skin to odd shades not found in nature, ostensibly for beauty and prestige. As far back as the 1990s, the Jamaican dancehall song âDem a Bleachâ talked about the phenomenon of using chemicals to alter the color of brown skin.
But the West African nation of Ghana is putting the kibosh on that.

@atribecalledkwes look at our people.
Everyoneâs seen this picture a million times in the last 12 hours, but you have to hear the story of how it happened:
Neil Leifer, possibly the best sports photographer of his generation, covered Ali for Time and Sports Illustrated from the early 1960s through Aliâs fight against Larry Holmes.
NEIL LEIFER: âHow good was Ali at self-promotion? Let me tell you a story that shows his genius. After he turned pro, Sports Illustrated did a piece on him. They assigned a free-lance photographer named Flip Schulke, and Aliâhe was Cassius Clay thenâasked, âWho do you work for?â Schulke told him he did a lot of work for Life. This was when Life was the biggest magazine in the country, and Ali wasnât that big then. Heâd won the gold medal, but that was it. There was no reason for Ali to be in Life magazine, so when he said, âMan, how about shooting me for Life,â Schulke told him, âIâd love to, but Iâd never get it past the editors.âÂ
Well, Ali accepted that, but a few minutes later, he was asking questions again. âTell me some of the photographs youâve done.â And Schulke explained that he did a lot of underwater photography; that was his specialty. And Ali thought of something on the spur of the moment, which shows what an absolute genius he was. His eyes widened, and he told Schulke, âI never told nobody this, but me and Angelo have a secret. Do you know why Iâm the fastest heavyweight in the world? Iâm the only heavyweight that trains underwater.â Schulke said, âWhat do you mean?âÂ
And Ali explained, âYou know why fighters wear heavy shoes when they run? They wear those shoes because, when you take them off and put the other shoes on, you feel real light and you run real fast. Well, I get in the water up to my neck and I punch in the water, and then when I get out of the water, Iâm lightning fast because thereâs no resistance.â Schulke was skeptical, but Ali swore it was the truth, and to prove his point, he told Schulke, âTomorrow morning, you can see me do it. I do it every morning with Angelo, and no oneâs ever seen it before. Iâll let you photograph it for Life magazine as an exclusive.âÂ
So Schulke called up Life and suggested the piece, and I think they ran five pages of Ali up to his neck in a swimming pool. And the two things I remember most about that were, first, Ali couldnât swim, not a bit; and second, Ali had never thrown a punch underwater in his life. It was a total bullshit story he made up, but it got him in Life, and Life didnât do it as a joke. They were convinced he trained underwater. Now thatâs a genius you donât see in people very often. Genius and a bit of a con man, too.âÂ
