The Ear of the Artist: ArtBBQ Studio Playlists 2018 #11: Brian Donnelly: artists share their favourite music with each other. Find new music and see if the music resonates with the creative output.
It’s that time of year in which @ronvanderende requests playlists from artists that have been keeping their studios working hard all year. Mine is a bit of a window rattler so crank it up and rip through the winter!
La Pucelle
archival print on paper, ash (edition of 19)
12" x 16"
2017
The original oil on paper painting was completed in the winter of 2017 and set on fire in the early spring. What remains is an edition of archival prints that have been signed, titled, and numbered using the ashes of the original painting. What the work asks is whether or not these prints usurp the role of the the painting in its permanent absence.

ART SCHOOL | Q & A with Brian Donnelly (Toronto)
Toronto based artist Brian Donnelly paints and “unpaints” his portraits into something that is strange and eerie, yet beautifully mesmerizing: His portraits often start crisp and realistic until it is purposely obscured, deteriorated, and altered, using his own mixture of toxic solvents. Not only were we intrigued by his unique work that focuses on issues of human identity, self image and vulnerability, but also his process, his influences and what he has coming up for 2017. We’re excited to chat with Brian in our newest Art School Q&A to find out more about the guy behind the melty faceless people!
