last week my therapist and i were talking about my inner voice which nearly always comes out in a terribly harsh way to beat myself up over everything and anything. and i often feel like it's this harshness that keeps me moving. if i want to change something about myself, it rarely feels like i get there with compassion and a genuine desire for growth. it's more like: you stupid thing you really struggle with this?? you are ridiculous, get over yourself, do better, you're supposed to be better than this!! and that gets me going. i rarely give myself kindness and gentleness and understanding for i fear it will make me stagnant. as i was telling her this, i could feel disgust and anger at myself for even thinking of allowing myself some compassion. for thinking: oh, poor me. that must be hard. even when my therapist shows what feels like the most basic level of compassion, or even just neutrality rather than something harsh, i can feel myself rolling my eyes, figuratively, and i don't really listen to what she has to say. as if that was infantalizing me or making fun of me. i feel ashamed. yet i so desperately crave this sickly sweet care. i feel like sexualizing it is the only way i'll ever allow myself to receive and feel it.
