Background.⋆♱: You’re an assassin under contract for the Zoldyck family. Why? Well, with Killua, Alluka, and Kalluto gone from the manor on their own adventures, Silva and Kikyo thought it’d best to have immediate professional help in case a mission came up that their children weren’t around to take, and that’s where you came in.
They didn’t bother to do an in-person interview, as your work spoke for itself. Clean, swift killings and never any witnesses. Though when you arrived at the Zoldyck manor, they were taken aback by your ‘eccentric’ style.
Black floor-length backless dress.
Eye-catching angle bite and a right spider bite piercings.
Black ballet lace wrap platform heels with bat wings.
“Mr. and Mrs. Zoldyck?” You said as you walked over to them.
Kikyo took a step back as you spoke, as she caught the glint of the viper piercings on your tongue along with the faint scent of poison in the air.
“Yes. Welcome to the Zoldyck Manor. We look forward to observing your work.” Silva said as he shook your hand.
“Gotoh will escort you to your room,” Kikyo said as she eyed you up and down.
As you left the grand foyer with Gotoh, Kikyo immediately turned to Silva.
“Did you see all those piercings!? There were even ones in her mouth! Are you sure she’s the assassin we read about?” Kikyo worriedly exclaimed to her husband.
“She is. The ones in her mouth held poison.” Silva said calmly.
He was correct in his observation.
The viper piercings you currently had in were infused with a mixture of chemicals that replicated the effects of viper venom, only they were much stronger and took immediate effect.
It worked perfectly on clients, especially if you happened to seduce the client, one kiss and immediate organ failure. Caught yourself in a struggle with a client who's fighting back? One bite. That’s all you needed. Of course, the poison does affect you, or at least it used to, but with the constant exposure, you’ve grown immune to most poisons.
This was something Silva was able to notice and immediately respected. So far, you’ve proved yourself a worthy partner to the Zoldyck family.
“God. Well, I hope she finds a more proper way to kill instead of such a tacky one.” Kikyo scoffed as she rolled her eyes.
“There’s no need. She’s found her way perfectly fine. I have a feeling she’ll fit in just fine here.” Silva said as he gently squeezed Kikyo’s hand in reassurance.
You found your way in the underworld of society and made a name for yourself all on your own. Not even the Zoldyck family could make you question your skills.
You were exactly what the family was looking for, even if they hadn’t realized it yet.
You swear that every time something of yours goes missing, he absolutely has it.
To be completely honest, you doubt that he could barely process the idea of another female in the Zoldyck manor that wasn’t staff or related to him.
Nonetheless, the first week at the manor, he seemed normal enough. He even introduced himself to you and showed you around his room.
“This is an internal virus that can be surgically implanted and is inspired by the Poor Man’s Rose. Once inside the target, a contagious disease is within the body, so anyone the target comes in contact with dies along with the target as well.” Milluki explained, highlighting his experiment and research.
“Though, wouldn’t it be more effective to simply kill the target? There’s no need to kill anyone besides the target.” You stated, pointing out the obvious flaw within his work.
“Even so, I prefer more remote ways of assassination.” Milluki huffed as he sat down in his chair.
It was that singular comment that made you realize that maybe he wasn’t as normal as you originally thought.
With your exposure to poisons overtime you established a strong sense of smell, and upon entering Milluki’s room, underneath the scent of cheap air freshener, there was an underlying stench of sweat, greasy food, and plastic.
So you excused yourself, deciding to keep your distance from him, not wanting to see what he was hiding underneath his facade of normalcy.
Unfortunately, that didn’t stop him from taking an interest in you, hence all your missing items, which consisted of four pocket lace thigh-garters which each held their own poisons and assassination materials.
When you found one of the missing four, you immediately noticed it had been bugged and crushed the camera underneath your Doc Marten boots.
“Where’s. My. Stuff.” You hissed as you barged into Milluki’s room, seeing its true state with the walls covered with scantily clad figurines and various snacks.
“I have no idea what you’re–” before Milluki could finish his poor denial you threw the broken camera at him.
“Give them back now before the next thing I break is you.” You demanded, already getting more irritated by the second.
“Geez! Fine! Whatever happened to asking nicely?” Milluki huffed as he handed you the rest of your stuff.
You snatched your things out of his hands, carefully looking them over, making sure they weren’t tampered with.
“Relax, I hadn’t gotten to bugging those yet; all I did was infuse the weapons you had in the pockets with the poison you were storing beside them.” Milluki sighed, hoping that would ease your anger.
“...Thank you, I guess.” You said as you walked out of his room.
Since then, you kept a great distance from Milluki, and when you two did interact?
Something about you that fascinated Killua was how many piercings you had. What always caught his attention were your thigh corset piercings, not because of their placement, but because of how you used them as weapons.
“Why do you have so many piercings?” Killua asked as he lazily performed a kickflip on his skateboard in the manor's courtyard garden.
“Well, at first it was simply because I liked them, but when I found out how to use them as assassination tools, I was immediately hooked.” You replied as you picked at one of the dark chocolate lilies in the garden.
“Assassination tools?” Killua repeated.
“Yeah, take the ribbon lace on my thigh piercings, for example, they can be unraveled and used as sedation tools since they’re laced with the chloroform-like properties. The smallest inhale of them is enough to instantly knock someone out.” You said as you toyed with the ribbon.
“Do you think they could handle electricity?” Killua asked, eyes gleaming with curiosity, as with his new understanding of nen and the perfection of Godspeed, he wondered if you, too, could imbue electricity in your own techniques.
“Yes, if I’m using enough defensive aura to protect myself, of course.” You said that as you looked at the small piercing, you had on your hand.
If replaced with a strong enough metal and with the right amount of electricity in your nen technique, it was entirely possible to turn that small piercing into a fully functioning taser.
“So, would you mind teaching me?” You asked.
“That depends…are you going to use it to kill?” Killua questioned. He was finished with the assassination business after all, and he refuses to let his actions fuel the profession either.
“No, I won’t ask you to teach me enough electricity skills to kill just enough to put someone to the ground, not in it.” You said truthfully, not wanting a skill Killua developed, being used in the same profession he walked away from.
“Fine, I’ll teach you!” Killua exclaimed as he grabbed your hand, ready to start your new training.
Similarly to how Killua developed using electricity, he exposed you to electric shock using tazers. Since it was only a small amount of electricity you needed, Killua had you focusing on replicating the same actions and amount of electricity a taser would.
Out of the entirety of his time in the Zoldyck Manor, this was the first time he actually enjoyed being there. You laughed, you were thoughtful, you were determined, and you were a friend. Someone, despite your differing paths, he could trust.
After two weeks of Killua’s lessons, you finished learning your newly acquired technique. It was perfect timing, really, since Killua and Alluka’s visit to the manor was coming to an end. Though it wasn’t surprising, this place was never good to them, and when they came, it was never for long. Still, the night of their departure, Killua stopped to say goodbye as he said,
“Promise to come see us when you're not in this place.”
“I promise.” You said as you gave him a soft smile as you watched Killua and Alluka leave.
While many promises between Killua and others have been broken, the one between you and him was one of the rare promises that were kept.
When Alluka first saw you, she was so excited to meet another person in the manor. When her and Killua reluctantly visit the manor, she was often left alone when Killua would be meeting with Silva and Kikyo. While it was easy to assume that she didn’t mind the isolation from others, it was obvious to anyone with a heart that she didn’t want to be alone.
Luckily, you weren’t the most informed on Alluka’s powers, and while you were in a contractual agreement with the Zoldyck family, personal family matters weren’t in the fine print, so you happily introduced yourself to Alluka.
Upon simply saying your name and offering a smile, Alluka's eyes lit up, and she smiled back at you, saying,
“My name's Alluka! Wow…You have so many drawings on you! They’re all so pretty!”
“Drawings?-- Oh! My tattoos! Yeah, some of them are really pretty, aren’t they?” You said with a sheepish smile. You rarely spoke about your tattoos, and while you had plenty of them, most, if not all, covered the scars from some particularly difficult assassinations and situations you’d rather forget.
“Hmm…They’re missing something–” Alluka hummed, thinking deeply as she eyed your tattoos.
“Missing something? Missing what?” You questioned, a bit lost on what she was trying to say.
“Color! That’s what they’re missing! They look so sad, but colors will fix it!” Alluka cheered as she pulled you through the halls of the manor for a ‘much-needed’ coloring session.
‘...color.’ You thought yourself as you sat across from Alluka, arms extended, and sleeves rolled up as she colored your various arm tattoos. Each tattoo told a story, most stories being darker than the last, and as you thought about your past, maybe color was what you needed back then.
Alluka colored you for hours. As she colored, you both talked, cracked jokes, and as the day faded into evening, one of the butlers informed Alluka that Killua would be waiting for her at the butler quarters for dinner, and she’d been allowed to stay in the butler's quarters with Killua for their stay.
“They look amazing!” Alluka cheered as she held up your arms.
“Yeah! They look great, Alluka,” You said softly as you looked at your now colorful arms.
“...Thank you…for not leaving me alone,” Alluka softly said as she gently loosened her grasp of your arms, letting them go.
“Of course! No one should be left alone, and besides, now you have me anytime.” You said, giving her a soft smile, squeezing her hand as reassurance.
“Really? Okay! I can’t wait!” Alluka said as she left the room with the butler, excitedly waving you goodbye with each step.
As you looked at your now colorful tattoos, you realized both you and Alluka were provided with something you needed today. Through your interaction, Alluka gained a genuine connection and interaction. While, on the other hand, color was brought into your life, a light that overpowered the darkness that these tattoos once held, and you were glad that Alluka brought that color to you.
With assassination came grace. A type of grace that only skill could provide, the exact grace Kalluto saw in you the first time they laid eyes on you.
You were shred of life within the manor, the only bit of life that hadn’t been snuffed out by harsh treatment or expectations. You held your head high and it showed. It was something Kalluto admired and wanted in themself.
It was midnight when you returned to the manor from a mission. Kalluto watched you enter the foyer, hands lightly bloodstained, outfit perfectly intact, and your head held high with no hesitation in your eyes.
“How do you do it?” Kalluto asked, breaking the midnight silence.
“Do what?” You asked as you wiped the now dried blood from your hands.
“How do you exude a powerful presence?”
“A powerful presence…” You repeated, thinking over Kallutos words. “Tell me, what makes you feel powerful?”
Kalluto paused for a moment. They never thought much about it, their life was lived in the shadows of their siblings leaving room for little thoughts on power or control, as in their world it was something on the strong could have.
‘What makes me feel powerful…’ Kalluto thought as they looked back at you. They weren’t exactly sure what made them feel powerful. There were only a few things that Kalluto admired about themself. Their nen technique, their grace, and their unsuspecting presence. It was those three things that Kalluto held dear to to their character and those attributes ultimately and perfectly defined them.
No matter how tightly they held onto those things they were ultimately lost in the sea of comparison as they observebed the strengths and power of their siblings. Comparison was the thief of any confidence Kalluto held and in the silence between the two of you it didn’t take long for you to realize that.
“A powerful presence isn’t about who’s the strongest. It’s about the confidence in oneself, about you assurance in your skills. When you have that confidence nothing else matters. No matter how much stronger the target is, as long as you stay on your feet and calculate properly you’ll win.” You said breaking the midnight silence.
“...Confidence…” Kalluto quietly repeated as if they were afraid to even utter the word.
“That’s all you need.” You said as you turned around and headed back to your room for the night leaving Kalluto behind you with your words.
Since then, you’ve haven’t seen much of Kalluto in the manor. Similarly to Killua and Alluka, they’re often off doing their own thing, but when you occasionally did see them in manor there was unmistakable change in their character.
It was almost as if a spotlight was shining on them. It was the familiar light of confidence in their eyes, in their step, in every move as they walked with their head high, now holding onto a confidence that no one could take.
It was one of your rare days off in the Zoldyck manor and you realized your hair could definitely use a re-dye. However, you weren’t interested in keeping the same old color. After visiting most of the stores in the Dentora region were beginning to lose hope. It was almost sundown and the day would soon fall into the beauty of night and your precious day-off would be over.
As you lazily trudged around the store looking for anything at this point, your eyes fell on a partiualr hair dye tucked in the back of the shelf.
‘Black No.1: Starlight Void’ is what the the bottle read. It looked good enough and the chemicals listed didn’t seem like they’d do much damage to your hair so you bought the bottle.
It was late evening when you returned to the Zoldyck manor. As you entered your room you decided changed into a old baggy t-shirt that hung off your shoulder and small pair of shorts, that were barely visible from underneath the shirt, as they were clothes you wouldn’t mind getting messy if theyhappened to get stained by the dye or any bleach.
You entered the bathroom and began mixing the dye per the instructions. According to the reviews it’s the darkest hair dye ever produced and apparently make your hair look stars glimmering over a darknight hence the name, ‘Starlight Void’. You couldn’t help but scoff at the suspicuosly positive reviews. Every dye came with it’s set of problems just like assaination, no method ever lasted long.
Nonetheless, you started dying your hair, the sounds of your favorite band playing in the background. By the time you finished applying the dye to first half your hair you were bored of standing in the bathroom so you made your way to the balcony instead. The stars were bright tonight and you could still see so you decided to continue the rest of the process outside stargazing.
“What’s that chemical smell?”
You paused as you heard the familiar voice of a particularly prominent Zoldyck behind you.
“It’s hair dye.” You said as turned around and faced Illumi.
Illumi nodded as he took a seat on the balcony’s edge. You didn’t bother saying anything else to him as you continued applying the dye, feeling his eyes on you.
Once you finished applying the dye, you wrapped your hair and let the dye sit in. You looked down at the half full bowl of dye, you were just going to throw it out that was until you locked eyes with Illumi.
“Want to try it?” You said with grin waving the dye in your hand
“...That? Why?” Illumi questioned as he squinted at the hair dye.
“Cause it’ll be fun and besides it’s not like anyone will notice it’s black dye.” You huffed.
Illumi looked at you, then the dye, and back at you. It wasn’t like he had anything better to do, so he agreed. As your dye settled in, you put his in. For the first time since you’ve arrived at the Zoldyck manor, this was the first moment of comfortable silence you had.
You gently applied the dye, carefully following the instructions with a gentle hand. So gentle that Illumi found himself relaxing in your touch. It wasn’t until he felt the absence of your hands that he realized you were finished applying the dye.
“I’m going to go wash mines out, yours still needs to sit for another 20 minutes.” You said as you stepped back inside your room leaving Illumi on the balcony.
As Illumi sat alone on your balcony he looked up at the stars, watching them shine knowing one day, like all life, it’d be snuffed out. Still, they would always be a beautiful and familiar sight to him.
He killed under the same sky each night. While targets, locations, weapons, and methods continue to change the time remained consistent. Illumi had seen many night skies similar to this one the only difference was that there was no feeling of bloodlust only a feeling foreign to him.
A feeling that could only be described as—
“Illumi? You’re staring, more than usual.” You said, your hair unwrapped and perfectly covered by the dye. You hair replicated the night sky itself.
It was then Illumi realized he wasn’t looking at the stars anymore. He hadn’t been looking at them for long while. He had been looking at you.
“What was the name of the dye again?”
Your hair, black like void yet filled with small and strong glimmers of light like stars. It was absolutely perfect on you.
“I see…” Illumi replied averting his gaze from you.
“...Anyway, I should rinse your hair now.” You said as you went back inside.
Illumi followed you to your bathroom allowing you to wash out the dye and dry his hair. Once you were finished you and Illumi looked at your matching hair color in the mirror.
Neither of you said anything as though you were both lost in the reflection staring back at you.
In the silence, you both realized that you could get lost in the void of each other just as easily as your eyes looked for stars in the night sky.
