My patriotic gesture for the times was warming up to Americana and expanding my appreciation of good old 'merican rock and roll. Here are the songs I choose to remember 2001.
New century, same discontent. Decided to take a break from school to work and revel and laugh and play. Spent time at WFUM behind the camera. Discovered that rock music was definitely not dead. Watched Almost Famous and High Fidelity over and over again. Those, along with with a well-timed greatest albums countdown convinced me to explore the music that had come before the songs of my youth. But that's another playlist. Here are the of-the-moment milennial jams.
1999. Pre-millenial tension produced some of the music, books, and movies I identify with the strongest to this day. Fight Club, Magnolia, American Beauty, Run Lola Run, and countless others at the theater. Classics from The Roots, Jimmy Eat World, Modest Mouse, and Fiona Apple. Lots of time driving to Ypsi for school burned these songs into my brain. Remember the freedom of Y2K paranoia with me, won't you?
The year was marked by roses and thorns. There were moments of joy, peace, love, sadness, anger, frustration, injustice, sometimes in quick succession. I was alternately inspired by and sickened by the world around me. I choose to believe that the good will prevail in the end. I saw too much of it all around me to believe otherwise.
These are the songs that strengthened my faith, made me think, fueled my frustration, or simply caught my ear and settled in.

I distinctly remember this being the first record I had to really work for. Now, 21 years later, it's etched into the marrow of my bones. Bravado and confidence gives way, crumbles, and then lets in just enough light at the end. The demos include Greg singing "My Curse." Marcy Mays from Scrawl sings the album version. It's one of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. Let me introduce you to Gentlemen. So happy to see it getting the attention it deserves. A masterpiece.
