To anyone who sees this, I hope you have an experience of whimsy today. I hope you see something utterly joyful, silly, and ridiculous, and I hope you see it and smile. I wish that for you today.
We're getting there little by little, sure. But it's a road.
Anyway happy international asexuality day back to work I go
And stay safe everyone!
I think part of what drives me so nuts about the whole Israel/Palestine discourse online in general is like.
There are actual, real issues that we could talk about. We could talk about the systemic issues in Israel, the problems (the BIG problems) with the Israeli government. We could discuss the settlements in the West Bank, we could discuss the issues with extremism within Zionism.
We COULD do all of that and possibly have some really great, productive conversations about how to fix these issues!
But we can’t, because right now every single Jew who DOES want to talk about that stuff is instead busy combatting waves of both Nazi and Soviet era antisemitism at literally every fucking turn, and we can’t discuss how to make things better in Israel for everyone until seemingly fucking EVERYONE ELSE stops advocating for our fucking genocide.
Muslims shouldn’t have to be compatible with Western, liberal values to get respect and recognition though. I’d argue it’s especially important for the ones Westerners find most repugnant to have their voice too. There’s nothing inherently less respectable about someone with “Death to America” as a watchword as “God bless America”
No one should have to adhere to certain beliefs or opinions in order to be afforded basic dignity and rights, I'm 100% fully on board with that.
"There's nothing inherently less respectable about someone with 'Death to America' as a watchword as 'God bless America'" -No. Absolutely not. You have completely lost me here. Proudly and publicly calling for the death of an entire country and everyone who lives there is inherently less respectable actually and it fucking should be.
There is such a thing as moral clarity and giving space to genocidal rhetoric and violent extremists who actively want to kill you because "their voices should be heard too" is not it. Good fucking God.
We all fuckin understand that you can't let bigots run around calling for the deaths of minorities with no consequences, because those kind of views are not respectable and tolerating them leads to their advancement and ultimately people getting killed. But somehow that goes right out the window as soon as we look at the middle east.
I'm really starting to think some of you don't actually see Muslims/Arabs as real people capable of making their own decisions, you see them as purely reactive entities with no personal agency who's thoughts and actions are entirely determined by outside forces. And that's pretty fucking racist.
This view of other countries and people in them as some reactive appendages of the US or, alternatively, Russia is not uncommon in the US, by the way. It's the legacy of the cold war. US controls western Europe, Russia controls eastern Europe. US controls Japan, Russia controls Cuba. And so on. Just look how US government overall and Trump in particular are enraged that no one wants to go back to that sort of the world and put out for him.
Seems safe to say there is a level of coercion involved in the Gabistat dynamic. Without being too specific, is there going to be a huge reveal regarding their shared past (maybe from Lestat’s childhood/adolescence) that explains how and why Lestat continues to be victimized by Gabriella? Or is each episode going to offer little pieces of the puzzle that when put together explain the scope of the abuse? My prediction is that something HORRENDOUS happened to Lestat in Auvergne in addition to familial abuse/neglect, and instead of supporting her child Gabriella chose to victimize him instead. I’ve read most of the VC, so I am extremely curious as to how the writers pull the rug out from under us. I’m probably going to rewatch each new episode multiple times scouring for clues and foreshadowing! But feel free to dispel any of my anxious musings, spoiler free ofc. 😬 😂
I think that... puzzle is still ongoing. And yes, it IS a puzzle.
There are a LOT of moving pieces, and a lot of... horrendous things, but that Gabrielle wields her power over Lestat by a very clear method... should be crystal clear latest in episode 6.
And especially rewatching it really... hurts to watch it.
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH FROM @FRANCOISARNAUDSOURCE!
I'm sure many bisexual guys feel the same and end up doing as I did: letting other people's assumptions of straightness stand uncorrected. Perhaps out of fear of oversharing. Under the guise of privacy, maybe. Probably because "masculinity" is a most fragile currency, ready to nose-dive at the first sign of vulnerability or difference. And because it's really fucking scary to give up your privilege. Without a doubt because stigmas of indecisiveness, infidelity, deception and trendiness are still clinging to bisexuality. But here's the thing. Silence has the perverse effect of perpetuating those stereotypes, making bi guys invisible, and leading people to doubt that we even exist. No wonder it's still a chore to acknowledge bisexuality without getting into lengthy explanations. So, yes, labels are frustrating and words, imperfect. But I've always considered myself bisexual. Not confused or trying to look edgy. Not disloyal. Not ashamed. Not invisible. - François Arnaud
I feel like however the show handles Lesmand will be controversial, as even book readers seem to have wildly disparate takes on what the dynamic even was. I just saw a post (with a lot of likes) saying something like: "they really need to capture the Mutual Obsession between Lesmand or I'll be pissed." When IMO Armand's feelings were clearly much stronger & it's a massive reach to call Lestat 'obsessed'. They keep using quotes where he describes Armand's beauty as Proof of some deep infatuation, when 1) that IS typical of Lestat's narration style, he describes a lot of character similarly and 2) even if he is attracted and has affection for Armand that doesn't mean he was madly in love the way they mean. Not to mention there are certain aspects of the book that probably wouldn't make sense or translate well in context.
Armand blew it with Lestat, and that is why that attraction will never come to pass, and why Lestat also never trusts Armand, not fully.
I do love the understanding they share, and yes, Lestat recognizes beauty, but... he does not love Armand the same way Armand is obsessed with him.
And I think that becomes VERY clear by "Blood Communion". Latest.
INJECTING IT
“Williams’ victory feels especially well deserved because Shane Hollander is not an easy character to portray. As we wrote in our review of the series, Williams delivers “a masterclass in micro-expressions and physical restraint.” Shane spends much of the story fighting against himself, suppressing emotions he barely allows himself to acknowledge, and Williams manages to communicate entire emotional arcs through a glance, a tense jaw, or a slight shift in posture. Every crack in Shane’s carefully constructed armor lands with devastating impact because of the work Williams puts in throughout the series.
Seeing that performance recognized on one of Canada’s biggest stages feels incredibly rewarding. Williams’ win is also historic in its own right. At just 25 years old, he became the youngest performer ever to win Best Lead Performer, Drama, at the Canadian Screen Awards, accomplishing the feat on his very first nomination.”
