Another little brother gone. I’ve known Josh longer than anyone from Oregon. He was one of the first people I met in the neighborhood when I moved in 88. He was a little kid with everything, including a trampoline in his backyard. Over the years we’d BMX together. We’d setup a big plywood double across from his house and when his parents were gone, I would set it up over their cars. I may have stolen his bike at some point. It was always just laying there! Haha. He was a few years younger than me and as we grew up, he became one of my little bothers. We’d go on to skateboard together. Be punks together. All in all just do the shit kids on the outskirts of the suburbs did. Like most of my friends, we escaped our hometown and rarely looked back. Be it days, months or years between seeing or talking to one another we’d just pick up and carry on like we never left one another. I’d move along and do dumb bike stuff and he’d become a cannabis innovator. It’d been a long ass time since we last connected and I heard from Josh just a week ago. He was working a job with a BMX dude from Pittsburgh that said he knew me. We only exchanged a few messages, but it was nice to hear from him and know he was alright. Tonight I learned I lost a 4th little brother from back home. Ryan, Joe, Seth and now Josh. Those are just four of way too many friends to list through my tears I have lost since high school. It doesn’t get easier. My heart shatters once again. There’s not much left. I miss my friends. I miss home. I miss living life and all the friends I’ve had to say goodbye to way too soon. Josh, I’d love to write more about you, but it’s taking everything in my to not completely collapse. Oregon was an amazing place to grow up, but I’m so fucking sick of its curse over us all.
