Just a couple of things that you may not know about Jesus
It is certainly no lie when I say that Jesus is the most famous and impact-ful person who has ever walked on earth. If we were to make a bit of a comparison, the influence that Jesus made during this time on earth makes Beiber and Oprah a bunch of “nobodies”.
Therefore, with all that being said, I am sure you do not need any special introduction to get to know who Jesus is. However, despite our claims to know Him through and through, as of lately, I have realized that to this day, there seems to be so much misunderstanding that circles around the name and person Jesus. So just to help get your motors running, I would like to share a couple of things that you might not know about Jesus.
Most of us have this strange notion that Jesus is a pretty laid back, low maintenance person. However unfortunately for the ease of life and fortunately for our joy, this isn’t the case at all. Jesus does not ask for a on and off relationship with Him. He wants all of you always- today and in the tomorrow as well. He just doesn’t want your presence on a Sunday. He wants you everyday.
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
Jesus wasn’t being slack when He said what He said in the above verse. This is a call to offer our entire life to Jesus because ultimately this would lead to our joy. A life lived for Jesus cannot be compared to any other. Offer your life up to Him.
2. The red-light district was one of Jesus’s hangouts
If you look around today, you are most likely to find a murals, stained glass windows of Jesus in places of worship. Back in the day though, you would have most likely to have found Jesus hanging out in the very places that the rest of the world would have chosen to avoid.
Jesus came to search for and save those that were lost and therefore it was the lost that he pursued after. Some of the places in scripture which points to some of the places that Jesus hung out are:
Matthew 21:31 - Jesus shares the truth of the Gospel with prostitutes and tax collectors.
Luke 7:37 - Jesus received gifts from a women labelled as a prostitute.
Luke 19: 1-10 - Jesus had dinner with tax collectors who were recognized as frauds and cheats.
John 4 - Jesus shared a drink and a chat with a promiscuous woman.
John 8 - Jesus defended a woman caught in the act of adultery.
Don’t be mistaken into thinking that Jesus approved of such conduct by these people he hung out with. Jesus chose to be around such people in order to lead them to joy through Him that was eternal. The nature of His mission compelled Him to be around those of lowly social status and disregard the common social norms that were practiced at the time. Jesus was so deep into bring glory to God and therefore He shared the gospel to those who the the most ready to receive it.
3. Jesus was not as mild and meek as you imagine Him to be
Culture has presented Jesus as this guy with with sleek locks of hair deserving to be in a Dove advert, all dressed up in spotless white robes and holding onto a cute looking lamb. Sounds like a commercial for a beauty product don’t you think?
However the Jesus that is presented in our culture today does not entirely fit the image of Christ as mentioned in the Bible. Jesus offered grace, forgiveness, comfort and mercy to those who felt the weight of their sin and chose to walk in repentance. Regardless in His drive to ensure that all things brought glory to God alone, Jesus did quite a few things that people at the time would consider outrageous.
John 2: 13-22 - Using a whip, Jesus drove all those who were profiteering in the temple.
Matthew 23 - Jesus called the leaders of His time as ‘children of hell’, ‘blind leaders’ and a ‘brood of vipers’.
Matthew 16:23 - Jesus did not hesitate to call His own disciple, Peter - Satan.
Jesus was a strong and a determined person driven by strength and humility. He displayed His strength by
Holding fast to all that was true.
Continuing to be courageous and faithful to His calling despite all the persecution that He had to go through.
He stood up against the corrupt leaders at the time and stood up for those in society who couldn’t stand on their own.
He endured a brutal crucifixion when He took our place on that cross and put death to shame when He rose up on the third day.
4. Jesus is NOT dead and Never will be
Some might consider Jesus to be a historical figure that walked our earth. If you are one of those people, then you might want to know that He isn’t just a historical figure, but more of a present figure. Jesus is alive in the the midst of us even as I write this post. Unlike some of the famous historic figures, Jesus didn’t remain dead when He was crucified and buried. Jesus defeated death and rose from the dead and in that act He showed all of us that nothing (not even the power of death) can stop the power of life that He has within which He in turn wants to share with us.
Unlike the other historical figures, there is no tomb or burial place for anyone to visit and pay respects because Jesus who is very much alive has not reason to live amongst the dead. As much as you may not realize this. Jesus is right next to where you are right now. Believe and you will see.
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
I am sure when your eye came across the word judge, your thoughts quickly registered to the above verse in Matthew 7:1. This is in fact a popular verse which is much used in our culture today. However, sadly, this also happens to be one of the most misused verses as well. Context, when reading the Bible, is such an important factor to consider and while the first sentence of that verse is super popular, the rest of the quote which follows is most often (and conveniently) overlooked which states that each of us being hypocritical as we are, we require a greater need in self assessment.
We usually make use of this verse as a shield or a ‘get out of jail free’ card to avoid judgement being passed onto our wrongs that we may have done. Yet, while we are busy protecting ourselves from the opinions of those around us, we totally fail to remember that there is infact a true Judge that we cannot detour or shield ourselves from. There will come a day where we will have to give account for all our actions and everything that followed. To believe in Him and to walk in active repentance would give you favor over those who do not choose to believe in Christ and those who choose to actively walk in sin.
Jesus paid the price for all the “logs” and “dirt” that have lodged into our eyes and has made is possible for sinners like you and me to be reconciled with God and experience His unending grace.Jesus will judge us and that day will surely come.
