This is a post about the infamous “Light-kun is my first ever friend” scene. We know L was manipulating Light, but I’ve never heard anyone explain the mechanism of the manipulation (in a way that I agree with) so I wanna take a shot… I guess I feel like this is both truer and juicier than other explanations I’ve seen BUT feel free to disagree.

L understands how doomed Light is by his own nature. L himself is doomed by his nature, but unlike Light he’s made it work and found a weird niche in which to survive and become acceptable to society. So even though Light is viciously trying to kill L and L knows it, L is able to treat Light as if he might still have a human heart.

In the scene, the walls are closing in on L. He had just deduced that the two Kiras had joined forces, and admitted to Light how threatening that was. As a last ditch effort to save his own life, he attempts to appeal to Light’s humanity. He is not certain if Light has any left, but if Light was just a teenager who let power go to his head and got carried away and didn’t know what to do except keep going, if Light was experiencing lifelong intellectual isolation with no hope of ever obtaining satisfaction except through godhood, maybe just maybe, the prospect of a friend who was an equal whom he could respect, who feels the same way about him, might just touch his cold dead heart. He might not actually want to kill that person, L supposes.

I think when people have trouble reading L they’re usually not clocking his fear, which is understandable because he doesn’t react to fear like a Normal Person. Bravery is his underrated trait, intelligence is the most obvious. In the scene, he and Light are having this intense conversation where they’re understanding each other like no one else can. Task force and viewing audience are both missing the meaning behind the things they’re saying. And the topic of the conversation is literally Light killing L dead. The fact that L appears calm and logical in this dire situation is almost the entire appeal of his character, isn’t it? Brave + Intelligent.

But yeah I think the reality was that Kira had his claws around L’s throat in that conversation and L was trying to save his own life by giving him big ol’ puppy eyes and going “but you’re my first friend?” And he did so from a place of fear for his life, not sincerity, thus he was indeed lying.
