thinking about how the messages in gun song and how i saved roosevelt are in many places largely the same, in that both the generic american bystanders and the assassins are trying to capitalize off of the tragedy of assassination. the main difference is that one of them felt so wronged by the american dream to attempt the act while the other just watched. but it is yet another way that sondheim connects the audience/general public to these assassins, in that they have the same motives. and maybe the american condition, and the expectations that the american dream creates, were at fault all along and that it is a systemic issue and not a personal one.
