Today is International Mother Language Day 🗣️

It is incredibly important to preserve and promote indigenous languages all over the world. At least 43% of the estimated 7000 languages spoken in the world are endangered.

Although I'm no where near fluent in Irish, I do my best to include our native language wherever I can in my business. This year, I'm also making a conscious effort to include more gaeilge in my work - so I started a series of seanfhocail designs for kits. You've probably already seen the first one (níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin) and here's two more I'm working on. Which one is your favourite?

I don’t get how in fantasy fiction, the women who actually enjoy sewing/embroidering are always painted as the weak, boring, and anti-feminist characters 

Sewing and embroidery take skill, patience, and artistic talent and it was also the ultimate way to ignore the annoying men in your life in past centuries 

If you didn’t feel like talking to a man, you just “took up your sewing” and he’d have to leave you alone, especially if he needed that shirt mended

Women also got together all the time to sew, weave, embroider but also talk, gossip, assist each other’s work, and enjoy each other’s company in peace 

The skill the female character has doesn’t have to be sword-fighting for her to be strong, because there’s strength and power in any skill she has

First day getting back into the routine and I'm feeling fresh and ready for the year ahead! New orders are packed and ready to be sent out tomorrow. And the website has been updated.

good time to remember that embroidery is an incredibly intricate artform with a rich and detailed history. because most of its craftspeople were and remain women, it has rarely received the attention given to say, oil painting, despite the fact that throughout history, for the average person embroidery was more visible and present in daily life. the reason this skill was so valued in young women was that future mothers and daughters-in-law could use this artform to add color and beauty and joy to entire lives & households.

seeing it elevated like in the video above is so remarkable. never forget that embroidery is as valuable and stunning as any artform
