Just thinking about that post that went around recently about not always making having swords and doing sword fighting be what makes a female character important/valuable/etc (while still letting girls have swords because they are cool-as-foretold) and it occurred to me that SD Smith’s Green Ember books seem to do this reasonably well.

Like there are a few times Heather picks up a weapon (a hammer, a spear, a blazing torch) because it’s an emergency and she’s on the spot. But she mostly leaves combat to her brother and friends and it’s her storytelling and medical work and generally being a good and faithful person that the story tends to emphasise.

Heyna Blackstar gets some moments where she’s pretty flaming ninja, disarming and defeating enemies in unarmed combat, but also spends a lot of time simply being a friend and companion to the princess - which the story depicts as a positive thing.

And then we have characters like Emma and Mrs Weaver who don’t do any fighting at all but are still shown to be really significant in their own way because of their leadership, their advice, their care for others.

That’s about as far as my coherent thoughts go on this. Just felt like sharing while I thought of it.

Something I'm really appreciating about The Green Ember so far is that it understands that teenagers are going to teenager regardless of the circumstances. Sometimes they develop an unsubstantiated hatred towards someone due to a deep-seated inferiority complex and they are going to be grumpy about it regardless of whether or not they're being chased by giant murderous wolves.
