Summer’s Different || Closed
Sam nodded, his smile still shy. Gabriel… An uncommon but beautiful name. “Nice to meet you too,” he said softly, letting Gabriel’s hand go despite it feeling nice in his own. It was encouraging that this person didn’t find him repulsive already, which Sam was used to experiencing because of the jocks at school. He watched the other boy carefully, scuffing his old sneaker against the floor while he stroked an absent finger over the spine of one of his books. “I think it’s wonderful that you bake.” By now it was clear that Sam spoke softly and kindly; even the light, almost pastel colors of his outfit reflected that. “What’s your favorite thing to make?” Sam glanced around to make sure nobody else was coming into the shop, though he found it odd that Gabriel seemed to be alone here when he wasn’t the owner.
Gabriel liked how open Sam was being with him. It was a pleasant change from his home where everyone hides under at least three facades. But his question made the shorter man think, bringing a hand up to his chin. “Hmm. I really like fritters and cannolis. They’re fun to make.” He walked over to the coffee maker when it finished and started pouring out a cup for Sam. He continued, “Cream puffs are also great cause we can fill them with a lot of different things.” His face lit up as he spoke, turning back to Sam. “Here you go.”
Sam smiled sweetly in response, finding it frankly beautiful that Gabriel's expression lit up with the thought of something he enjoyed. His tawny colored eyes caught the sunlight from the window and that was nearly breathtaking, making Sam pause before answering. "Oh.. I've never had those before. I'll have to come back sometime and try them." He looked around for a moment and said, "Be right back," before hurriedly placing his books on a nearby table. He returned to the counter and took the coffee with another cute smile, feeling a fluttering in his belly. "Thanks. Maybe, um... maybe if nobody else comes in for a bit, you can come sit with me?" He tried not to look too hopeful.

“We got a bit o’ everything. Are you in the mood for pastries, breads, or sweets? Maybe some chocolates?” Gabriel suggested. He hoped he could get a sale from this man, it would get him in good graces with his boss.
Gabriel smiled as he reached into the small fridge under the coffee maker to grab the creamer. “Every day?” he questioned softly, but didn’t press any further. He casually leaned against the back counter as he waited for it to brew. He looked out the large window longingly. “Eh, it’s been worse,” he admitted as he dragged his eyes back to the newcomer, “Besides, sometimes they let me back into the kitchen to try some things if things are too slow.” He smiled genuinely, almost forgetting he was talking to a stranger, “And I get the weekends off, so I get enough time outside if I really need it.”
“Yeah, every day,” Sam confirmed shyly, brushing his brown bangs from his eyes. It was awkwardly styled– not short like a lot of guys, but not gelled into a certain style like the greasers either. It was just kind of there. Noticing that nobody else was coming in, Sam took a step forward and placed his books on the front counter beside the register, just to give his arms a rest. “You like to bake?” He asked with a little smile. That was definitely odd for a boy their age, but Sam liked the idea. “I’m Sam, by the way,” he added after a beat of pause, extending his hand over the counter to shake the man’s hand. Sam was peculiar that way– he liked to know the names of people who showed him any kindness. He didn’t find it much, so the list was short, and maybe he’d come back here for the rest of the summer and make this young man a friend. Surely they had something in common, being similar ages living in the same place.

Sam laughed shly and looked at the man leaning over the counter- the way his golden tawny eyes shone in the sunlight was beautiful.
“Um.. If you’ve got black coffee to go with it, I’d love a blueberry scone. Do you have those?” He shifted on his feet for a moment, feeling suddenly insecure about his appearance and the books he carried, not that it took much for him to feel that way.
Gabriel pushed off the counter with a smile and nodded, walking over to their coffee maker and prepped to brew a new batch. The brew from the morning had gone cold and Gabriel refused to serve substandard coffee to any guest. While the pot was filling, he moved back to the glass cases and reached in for the scone.
“Just black? No cream or sugar? Maybe some flavor?” Gabriel suggested as he put the scone in a pastry bag for the other. “If you want, I can get you a bag or a box for those books?”
Sam watched him move with a look of interest, noting that the man’s arms were seemingly just as golden with tan as his eyes, a nice contrast to the crisp white of his short sleeved shirt. “Um. Cream would be nice, thank you.” Sam nodded once, and then lifted a hand from his books to gesture. “Oh no, it’s fine, thank you. I, uh. Carry these every day. I’m used to them.” After a small pause where nothing was heard but the coffee maker, Sam piped up, “I guess it’s slow for you today. I’m sorry to hear that, I’m sure you’d rather be outside on a nice day like this.”
