So I just watched the newest episode, Charlie, and then go down the WBB tag to see what’s good and I am seeing some pretty negative things going on.
Transphobia in We Bare Bears?
I don’t think so friends.
Time and time again we have seen the “Guy dresses as a girl to disguise himself” in cartoons. Looney Toons has done it many times, it happened in Dexter’s Laboratory, Scooby Doo did it too. So what is the difference between those instances and this one?
The crowd of photographers, as well as the bears, say “Ew”.
Now, Charlie is Big Foot and in lore Big Foot is described as a giant, or semi giant, creature covered in head to toe with fur. Some say it’s a violent creature, other’s say it’s mostly peaceful. Some say it has sharp teeth and claws, others say it doesn’t. Back to the point, Big Foot was never mentioned to be, at any point in it’s lore, handsome or attractive. Though I’m sure people have made some killer art of Big Foot that is pleasing to the eye, Big Foot was not an attractive creature at all.
I mean here are some artist interpretations of Big Foot
As you can see Big Foot is not what humans would call attractive. Big Foot is a very masculine, hairy creature with an ape like face.. Now imagine Big Foot dressing up as a woman.
Okay. I am 90% sure Big Foot dressing as a woman would be a horrifying experience.
Charlie, who is Big Foot, basically scrapped together what he had on hand. A mop for hair, cheese shmutz as lipstick and a apron as a dress. It’s not a pretty picture, is it?
Now I know that there were many other words that the script could have used, like “Uh”, “Huh”, “What”, “Urk” and even silence would have sufficed, but “ew” is a fine word to use because Big Foot, in that attire, is not at all a pretty picture. One reporter does call Charlie “It” and “That thing” but honestly, while Big Foot is humanoid, Big Foot is not human and is a creature. Creatures typically don’t have genders. The Yeti and the Lochness Monster are examples of genderless creatures.
I am positive that Chong wouldn’t damage the show’s reputation like that and I am also positive that he meant no harm by doing that.
That whole scene turned out alright in the end. Panda set aside his differences with Charlie in order to help him get away, Panda and Charlie made up, and while their parting was on the awkward side, it is understandable. Pretending to be boyfriend girlfriend with Big Foot is something out of Panda’s comfort zone.
Wouldn’t you be a little uncomfortable pretending to date someone who was bugging you about your relationship status only hours ago?
So, with that in mind: please stop painting We Bare Bears like some demon show because of one overused cartoon troupe.
