My chiltepin came back after all the rain we’ve had over the last 2 months. This plant was originally a volunteer in shade bed on the other side of the house. It then spent some time (months if not a year) in a pot next to that shade bed. I finally moved it to the first hugel last fall. This big garden spider decided yesterday to build its web over the office doorway. Either by coincidence or because this is a very smart spider, it built its web over the corner of the door frame on the hinge side and attached the other side to the door itself. These mofos were the 7th and 8th tobacco hornworms that I found on my tomatoes. These are the largest of the bunch but still quite small in comparison to caterpillars I have found in the past. The larger one is probably 2 inches. I think the adult form of this may be a beneficial insect, but these buggars can make quick work of my tomato plants, so they were quickly dispatched with my hand pruners.
