he clicks his tongue against his teeth. he shouldn’t. the only money he gets are from loans for being broke as hell with muggle parents who are entirely unsupportive. but if he wins the bet he could be raking in a lot of extra cash. he weighs his options, considers the bet. he shouldn’t. it’s risky, but

“yeah. put my money on ravenclaw. they better win this.”

kaz writes down this name in the book he uses to keep track of the bets, he writes everything in code in case a teacher finds it and tries to figure out what exactly he’s been up to. when he’d first shown up here he hadn’t even had the money for a snack on the train now he didn’t even question the money he could spend when his class went out to the nearby village. someone was bound to get curious eventually.

“you want to pay a little extra and i’ll even give you insurance.”

potions is alright, in piper’s opinion. she’ll find it interesting one class, then get bored out of her mind the other, especially if she knows anything about what the professor’s teaching on the day. those days have happened less, though, since they were partnered up. her partner isn’t half bad, it helps her keep focus at the task at hand instead of thinking about ten other different things if she isn’t too interested in the subject already.

“three? really?” she didn’t pay attention to the actual list, too interested in what they made. “that seems— alright, i think.”

he wasn’t used to people doubting him, he should be really but he isn’t or more that it worms under his skin and makes him want to prove them wrong in a thousand different ways. “yes, three.” with a roll of his eyes he pointed to the portion of the instructions that said to use three for a stronger dose. wasn’t technically what they had to do but it was the better potion, why waste time on something that wasn’t powerful?

“see?”

“you’re on the qudditch team, right? for gryffindor?” he keeps tabs on these things but might as well ask so that she doesn’t think he’s taken any specific interest in her. “that might be of use.”

the hufflepuff common room was noisy as ever. and cathryn was secluded from the activity, so she opted to making a stop at the kitchen and finding somewhere to read. she pulled out a pastry wrapped in a napkin and put it out for him. “you want one?”

“if the wizard world is really so amazing you’d think they would have technology on par with the muggle world.”

clearly not. this place was stuck in some forgotten time where they didn’t need to even try and be accessible to people with pain or disabilities. not that he ever said a word to teachers or anyone really, she just found him in a moment of pain and frustration.

the idea that the snack was a trap flashed through his mind but he reached out and took it quickly, inspecting it carefully as he watched her from the corner of his eyes. where he came from food was the best way to punish someone. slip something that would make them sick into it as a way of teaching a lesson. but he can’t imagine he’d done something to piss her off. “sure. where’d you get these? keep a secret stash?”
