In honor of International Women’s Day, Beat Bar Beauty’s Beauty Stain Project set out to discuss beauty, skin conditions, race, and female empowerment. We hoped to promote diverse beauty and initiate the #IdealBeautyRejection. We wanted women of ethnic groups to share their experiences and contribute their stories to our Beauty in Diversity Movement. We wanted to provide research on the influence of beauty ideals on women and girls of ethnic groups and provide insights on how to initiate discussions on beauty ideals within the household. We wanted women and girls of ethnic groups to reject European beauty standards. Research indicates that although the media is a huge proponent of beauty ideals, beauty ideals permeate through family, peers, and larger society.
What We Discovered
A majority of participants in our study were between the ages of 25-34 with at least a Bachelor’s degree. All of our participants were female.
On The Importance of Beauty
A majority of participants felt that beauty was an important element in their lives and that they either spent a lot of time on their looks or they followed beauty companies or beauty magazines on social media.
On Family Discussions on Beauty
A majority of participants indicated that their parents did not discuss body image with them as a child.
Understanding the Importance of Body Image
Research indicates that at early ages, as young as 6, girls experience body dissatisfaction. It is important to initiate critical discussions on body image and media images within the household. Experts suggest co-viewing TV programs with your daughter and talking about female representations.
Promoting Extracurricular Activities
Encourage sports, music, or reading activities within the household. Such activities can help in boosting self esteem. Develop habits that help your child become more engaged in the world, as well as habits that help with self improvement.
Monitor Your Own Behavior
Parents heavily influence children’s perception of beauty and body image. Do you often make comments about your own body dissatisfaction? Do you talk about hair within your household? Do you talk about natural hair in a negative or unpleasant manner? Do you make negative remarks on skin tones? Do you make negative remarks on features you deem unfavorable such as larger noses or thicker lips? Think about the messages you are sending. Your child is listening and is heavily influenced by your beliefs.
Women and young girls should always feel secure and should not feel disempowered due to stifling beauty standards, which is why a world which embraces diverse beauty is important to the political, social, and economic development of women of ethnic groups. Young women of ethnic groups should not have to feel pressured into fitting a certain beauty standard. Instead, they should be made to feel naturally beautifully.

Beat Bar Beauty's Co-founder Ramona Selvarajah on The Beauty in Diversity Movement #IdealBeautyRejection
What would you like to accomplish with the Beauty in Diversity Movement?
Beat Bar Beauty would like to accomplish acceptance with the Beauty in Diversity Movement. We would like for all to accept their skin, their beauty, their smile, and their heart.
Have you ever been told that you were not beautiful or felt that you were not beautiful? I think one feels "not beautiful" when they compare themselves to what society feels is beautiful. When a person doesn't really consider who they are as an individual they lose sight of their inner beauty and what they can do to change the world.
How can the media/society work to ensure diverse beauty? The media/society can bring more light to different skin tones, races, sizes, and characters to ensure diverse beauty in the world.
Share with us your own experience with beauty standards by taking our two (2) minute survey.

Love every inch, every pore, every flaw!
It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength ― Maya Angelou
The Beauty Stain Project: The Beauty in Diversity Movement is a bold movement to embrace and promote diverse beauty. The movement encourages discussions on beauty, skin conditions, race, and female empowerment and disseminates these messages in hopes of empowering women through the process.
European standards of beauty circulate frequently via Western media and advertising and promulgate harsh concepts and images. Women of ethnic groups are especially impacted by European beauty standards. Such beauty standards result in negative body image among women of ethnic groups, prompting psychological, social, and cultural implications. Further, incessant messages about European ideals of beauty are not only prevalent within the media, but remain pervasive through family, peers, partners, and larger society.
The internalization of European beauty standards is a societal issue that begins during childhood. By the early age of 6, girls begin to show concerns regarding body image. In a study conducted on 10-17 year olds, 72% stated that they felt pressure to be beautiful.
Girls of ethnic groups ages 11-14 scored higher than White counterparts on body dissatisfaction. For example, African Americans girls may be vulnerable to eating disorders and felt pressured in order to combat stereotypes.
This internalization of European beauty standards has a significant impact on the self-esteem of women, particularly women of ethnic groups. The European beauty standard refers to close association to European features. In Western culture, such features are considered more attractive. These features include close relation to whiteness, such as lighter skin, straight hair, a thin nose and lips, and light colored eyes.
Women of ethnic groups need to be empowered in order to protect themselves against negative messages that they receive from their environment. In order to combat these ideals, empowerment begins at home.
From from March 2-6, in honor of International Women’s Day, Beat Bar Beauty challenges society to aid our Beauty in Diversity Movement by participating in our discussions on beauty, skin conditions, race, and female empowerment. We want society to know that we reject their beauty standards! We want young girls and women of ethnic groups to know that they should also reject European beauty standards! We want parents to educate their young on topics of beauty, skin conditions, and diversity. We want women of ethnic groups to embrace their natural beauty. Ultimately, to love every inch, every pore, every flaw.
OBJECTIVE
Beat Bar Beauty’s Beauty Stain Project hopes to combat negative body image among women of ethnic groups and people who suffer from visible skin conditions. The Beauty Stain Project: The Beauty in Diversity Movement visualizes and fosters a world that condemns the degradation of ethnic women/women of ethnic groups and instead, embraces diverse beauty.
GOAL
The Beauty Stain Project: The Beauty in Diversity Movement hopes to achieve the following goals:
Invite girls and women of all ethnicities to partake in discussions on beauty, skin conditions, race, and female empowerment and reach a wider audience.
Educate audiences on issues of beauty, skin conditions, and race.
Challenge European ideals of beauty by dismantling media messages regarding such beauty standards.
ABOUT THE BEAUTY IN DIVERSITY MOVEMENT
The Beauty Stain Project is for the woman suffering from visible skin discoloration/deformities like; vitiligo, hyper-pigmentation, scars, or rosacea. The mission of the project is to increase self-esteem and lower depression rates among young girls and women with these conditions by providing holistic solutions. The Beauty Stain Project promotes women’s confidence, stability and appreciation for their unique beauty. We seek to dispel the myth that “a ton of makeup is what makes you beautiful”. We promote images and stories of women embracing unadorned, beautiful and natural skin.

Cold weather and alcohol can cause skin to dry. This is pertinent information for New Yorkers since we’re home to snow storms and an array of gin and whiskey joints to get us through winter.
If you’ve ever needed an excuse to pig out on guac and chips, here’s one: Avocados are one of many fruits high in antioxidants, which repairs damaged skin.
Cutting your smoking habit is long overdue. But, if you do need more convincing, smoking damages skin, by interfering with the flow of oxygen. Oxygen is a basic survival need! Don’t deprive your skin.

Western culture rarely highlights diversity in skin. Further, discussions on skin conditions are often tuned out. Beat Bar Beauty’s Beauty Stain Project hopes to combat negative body image among people who suffer from visible skin conditions and work to empower women.
Beat Bar Beauty’s co-founder Ramona Selvarajah was featured in An About Face feature by Innertia Project. Ramona points out how liberating it was to remove her makeup and as she spoke, she was absolutely radiant. She describes her reaction to the symptoms of vitiligo and how her journey impacted her life experience since she was diagnosed in 2013. Ramona addresses what it means to be beautiful in a culture obsessed with beauty.
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty to me means being comfortable in your own skin, and letting all your imperfections become your everyday “glow”. Your character, feelings, emotions, and abilities should feel empowering and that should exude through your skin.
Has your definition of beauty changed since you were diagnosed with vitiligo?
My definition of beauty has tremendously changed over the years. I realized it was more about who I was, and who I was surrounding myself with to make myself a better person. I realized pre-diagnosis I took vanity way too seriously rather than considering what was really important. I took for granted who I was and what I should work on and worried more about my looks, and appearances.
How can the media work to accommodate diverse beauty?
We live in a society where the media picks and dissects every little thing about a person. Instead of humiliating and making someone feel bad about themselves, the media should try to embrace all types of beauty and bring more light to skin disorders and imperfections.
How does your experience help to empower women of color?
I want women of color to embrace their skin, their color, and their flaws. We live in a world where we have always had to prove something because of our skin color, when really it should always be constantly celebrated, empowered, and inspired. I embrace my spots because they make me who I am. Every spot has taught me something about myself that I have had to accept and grow from.
What makes you fearless?
I wouldn’t say I'm fearless all the way. Im still growing and learning. I will say that I am much more braver and confident in my actions, words, spirit and beauty. I am much more comfortable in my reactions, and more proud of who I am becoming.
