          SHE  LETS  HER  DOG  START  LEADING  the  way  as  they  start  passing  through  the  quad  .  with  ace  being  a  trained  ,  cece  didn’t  have  to  worry  about  keeping  minimal  slack  between  the  leash  and  her  dog  .  she  momentarily  glances  down  at  her  watch  before  feeling  a  light  tug  on  the  leash  .  looking  up  ,  she  quickens  her  pace  to  stop  ace  from  circling  around  and  sniffing  the  other  person  .  “  hey  ,  sorry  !  he’s  friendly  i  promise  .  i  think  he’s  just  a  little  curious  and  still  not  entirely  used  to  everything  in  the  building  .  ”

Selin grinned, “honestly, I’m a lightweight when it comes to alcohol.” she had been nursing her drink for the last hour, sipping on it when she remembered. The food that the mixer offered was much more appealing than the bar, “yes, they are delicious,” she smiled, “i have never had any before tonight, but I’ll definitely be having them more.” The mooncakes reminded her of a Turkish dessert her mother would always make, helva, and it held a special place in heart, “how are you liking all the treats?”

          A  GENTLE  LAUGH  EXPELS  PAST  HER  LIPS  .  “  that’s  definitely  not  a  bad  thing  .  it’ll  save  you  money  at  the  bar  ,  ”  she  points  out  before  taking  another  sip  of  her  drink  .  cece’s  more  of  a  social  drinker  ,  preferring  to  nurse  a  drink  at  any  event  that  serves  alcohol  .  “  oh  i  love  them  .  they’re  delicious  .  i  had  a  roommate  in  college  that  introduced  me  to  them  .  granted  ,  i’ve  only  had  the  traditional  ones  .  i  didn’t  even  know  other  options  existed  .  what  about  you  ?  ”

Ding! As soon as she heard the noise, Laurel perked up and clicked the red dot on her recorder. Every last detail would be hers. She soon learned her position was not the best to remain unnoticed, though, when her neighbor and a dog ran right int her. How did she explain this? Laurel hopped to her feet, trying to inconspicuously stuff her recorder away. “No, I was just tying my shoe. He’s cute though, I wouldn’t mind if he did run into me.”

          SHE  DOESN’T  MISS  THE  WAY  THE  other  woman  is  stuffing  something  into  her  pocket  .  cece  has  to  stop  herself  from  throwing  the  odd  look  towards  her  way  .  “  you  say  that  but  i  wouldn’t  be  so  sure  ,  ”  she  lightly  grimaces  .  “  he’s  almost  90  pounds  and  he  can  get  a  little  too  excited  sometimes  ,  ”  she  chuckles  ,  generously  petting  the  top  of  ace’s  head  .  “  i’m  sorry  i’m  being  rude  ,  i  think  i’ve  seen  you  around  the  building  but  we  haven’t  actually  met  .  i’m  cece  .  ”

                “  mhm.  ”  adriana  moved  a  strand  of  hair  from  her  face  as  she  tilted  her  head  to  the  side.  the  fact  that  there  was  literally  free  alcohol  was  going  to  help  her  get  through  this,  as  she  was  finally  going  to  meet  the  rest  of  her  neighbors.  she  had  already  met  a  few  others  already,  either  before  the  mixer  or  a  few  minutes  ago.    “  i’m  not  exactly  one  for  things  like  this,  b-but  i  felt  like  it’d  be  rude  of  me  to  decline.  so,  tonight,  i’m  going  to  suck  it  up  and  enjoy  the  mixer.  ”  she  motioned  over  to  the  drinks.  “  with  a  little  help  of  something  called  alcohol  courage.  ”  with  a  few  drinks  in  her  system,  she  would  be  much  more  brave  in  terms  of  meeting  people.  “  how  long  have  you  been  here  at  the  mixer?  ”

          “  YOU  MAKE  IT  SOUND  LIKE  IT’S  a  bad  thing  ,  ”  cece  lightly  jests  .  social  events  aren’t  for  everyone  but  this  felt  like  an  event  to  hit  two  birds  with  one  stone  .  socialize  and  meet  your  neighbors  .  but  maybe  she’s  just  looking  forward  to  seeing  most  of  the  building’s  tenants  so  she’s  not  caught  off  guard  .  god  ,  what  if  she  had  an  ex  living  here  too  ?  “  liquid  courage  really  can  do  wonders  .  but  hopefully  you’re  enjoying  yourself  .  ”  she  brings  the  glass  up  to  her  lips  .  “  i’ve  been  here  about  an  hour  and  a  half  now  ?  ”  eyes  quickly  dart  down  to  her  watch  .  “  yeah  just  about  .  but  what  about  you  ?  just  got  here  or  waiting  to  make  an  early  exit  ?  ”

        great ?  well ,  certainly interesting ,  hanson notes ,  himself not trusting all of the other mixer patrons to know and / or honor their own limits .  his eyes drift across the room to a familiar face from the floor below ,  already looking a little sloshed despite the mixer occurring for less than an hour .  but he could definitely look on the bright side  —  especially as he finishes up the contents of his wine glass .  at the woman’s suggestion ,  he pauses .  “  i’ve gotten the rundown from my wife .  she’s chinese ,  ”  he elaborates ,  “  what’s your favorite pairing ?  ”

          EVEN  WITHOUT  ALCOHOL  TO  SERVE  AS  a  social  lubricant  ,  cece  finds  herself  striking  up  a  conversation  with  just  about  anyone  at  a  party  .  could  it  have  to  do  with  the  year  spent  in  the  glitz  and  glamor  that  is  fashion  ?  possibly  .  “  ah  i  see  .  this  might  just  be  the  second  time  i’ve  had  a  mooncake  ,  ”  she  admits  .  “  but  i’m  a  big  fan  of  the  snowskin  mooncakes  and  i  think  the  remy  martin  pairs  really  well  with  it  .  it’s  silky  ,  delicate  and  not  at  all  overpowering  .  did  you  want  to  give  it  a  try  ?  ”

kaede was already halfway through her pour when she realized someone was next to her. she had spent far too many hours being awake and existing as a fully grown adult, and now she was ready to party. “i don’t know if the organizers could afford to keep it an open bar with me around, but that’s a fun experiment we’ll have tonight,” she commented back, shimmying her shoulders while sipping her drink. “i did have one when i came in, and i had to fight the urge to stuff some into my purse. i’ve never really gotten the whole alcohol and food pairing thing. they all kinda just end up tasting the same to me. like what is the whiskey doing to the moon cake that makes it a good pairing?”

          “  OH  I’M  SURE  THEY  ACCOUNTED  FOR  it  in  their  budget  .  ”  given  aspen  and  veronica’s  first  impressions  ,  cece  held  no  doubts  that  these  women  have  their  shit  together  .  she  helps  herself  to  another  slice  of  mooncake  .  it’s  quickly  followed  by  a  sip  of  her  whisky  .  “  you  probably  would’ve  gotten  away  with  snagging  a  couple  mooncakes  ,  ”  she  chuckles  .  “  i  think  the  whole  point  of  food  pairings  is  to  even  out  the  flavors  .  but  to  answer  your  question  ––  i  think  the  whisky  really  tones  down  the  sweetness  .  i’m  not  a  sweets  person  so  it  makes  it  a  little  more  bearable  .  ”

Thank god for Cece that’s all Chase was thinking as she stepped in and immediately forced their annoying neighbor Patrice to stop talking to him. He played along because he needed an excuse to not have to continue the conversation with the older woman. “My place. You can come up now if you want, I could use some help with the salad.” He smiled and then mouthed a thank you to his neighbor, glancing at the numbers lighting up to tell them which floor they were on. “She always does this. I think she’s lonely but my god get a parrot.” Chase whispered back.

          SHE  FOCUSES  HER  ATTENTION  TO  CHASE  .  although  ,  it’s  hard  to  tune  out  patrice’s  babbling  .  no  hate  ,  cece  is  sure  she’s  a  lovely  woman  but  by  god  can  she  NOT  take  a  hint  .  “  perfect  !  there’s  this  new  vinaigrette  recipe  i’ve  been  meaning  to  try  .  ”  she  shoots  a  wink  towards  him  .  “  if  she  wants  to  hear  herself  talk  i  think  a  cat  might  be  a  better  option  ,  ”  she  chuckles  .  “  i’m  gonna  be  honest  with  you  ,  this  is  the  first  time  i’ve  run  into  her  .  i  didn’t  even  know  she  lives  in  the  building  .  ”

As he poured a little more liquor in his glass he smiled slightly and shrugged. “I think the best thing about the open bar is that some people are gonna get belligerently drunk and then I can laugh at them making fools of themselves.” Chase countered and took a sip of his drink. Though in general he hated drunk people, if he had the option to leave and not deal with them when he got bored of it, then maybe it was funny.

          LIPS  CURL  UP  INTO  A  SMILE  as  she  chuckles  into  her  glass  .  “  oh  i’m  sure  there’ll  be  a  few  .  ”  head  turns  to  spot  a  group  of  people  already  swaying  on  their  feet  .  “  but  can  you  blame  them  ?  ”  cece  asks  ,  moving  to  stand  next  to  chase  .  she  sips  her  drink  before  gesturing  towards  the  crowd  .  “  either  aspen  or  veronica  kick  them  out  or  they  end  up  leaving  and  barely  remember  the  night  .  what’s  your  prediction  ?  ”

 chocolate  hues  are  drifting  through  the  crowd  of  attendees,  finding  comfort  in  people  watching  from  a  safe  distance  at  the  bar  until  the  whiskey  he’s  nursing  starts  to  kick  into  effect.  hearing  what  the  person  beside  him  says  has  a  chuckle  pass  through  his  lips,  mouth  curling  upward  in  a  grin  around  his  glass  as  he  sips  his  drink.  ❝  that’s  definitely  a  plus  side.  from  what  i’ve  seen  so  far  from  some  people  i  sure  as  hell  hope  none  of  them  are  actual  bartenders.  if  there  isn’t  anyone  passed  out  near  the  shrubbery  by  the  end  of  the  night  i’ll  be  surprised,  ❞  nik  answers  with  a  shake  of  his  head  before  turning  to  look  at  his  companion.  ❝  i  had  one  earlier  and  it  was  delicious.  super  sweet.  if  i  ate  another  in  rapid  succession  then  i  might  develop  a  cavity,  so  i’m  trying  to  pace  myself.  otherwise  i’d  go  home  with  a  number  of  them  hidden  in  my  pockets,  ❞  he  admits  and  grins.  ❝  what  number  are  you  on  ??  drink  or  mooncake,  that  is.  ❞

          “  NOTHING  WRONG  WITH  LIKING  YOUR  DRINKS  STRONG  ,  ”  cece  lightly  jests  .  although  she’s  sure  that  there  are  some  people  with  vodka  tonics  that  held  the  tonic  .  “  i  doubt  aspen  or  veronica  will  let  it  get  that  far  .  i  think  this  is  supposed  to  be  one  of  those  classy  resident  events  .  ”  she  fondly  shakes  her  head  ,  reaching  for  a  slice  of  mooncake  .  “  i  overheard  from  cora  that  they’re  meant  to  be  shared  so  now  i  don’t  feel  bad  for  only  wanting  a  small  slice  to  sample  .  ”  she  laughs  .  “  oh  me  ?  drinks  ...  i’d  say  this  is  number  three  .  mooncake  ?  i’ll  say  i’ve  had  the  equivalent  of  one  because  i’ve  just  been  sampling  all  the  different  flavors  .  my  personal  favorite  is  the  snowy  one  with  the  custard  filling  .  did  you  have  a  favorite  ?  ”

                  “  mhm.  ”  an  open  bar.  sold.  adriana  had  her  own  drink  that  she  made  earlier  on  in  her  hand,  taking  a  sip  of  it.  if  she  was  going  to  make  it  through  any  social  situation  such  as  a  party,  she  was  going  to  have  at  least  a  little  bit  of  alcohol  in  her  system.  looking  down  at  the  mentioned  mooncakes,  her  eyes  lit  up  a  little  bit.  “  ooo,  a  mooncake!  ”  she  grabbed  one,  looking  down  at  it  before  taking  a  bite  out  of  it.  “  i-i  don’t  remember  the  last  time  i’ve  had  one.  ”  she  nodded  her  head.  “  uh,  are  you  enjoying  the  mixer?  ”

          EYES  SETTLE  ON  THE  HORIZON  ,  watching  the  sun  slowly  set  .  cece  brings  the  glass  to  her  lips  and  takes  a  sip  .  when  aspen  announced  there’d  be  a  mixer  ,  she  immediately  started  planning  out  potential  outfits  .  she  might’ve  met  a  couple  people  around  the  complex  already  but  she’s  curious  to  see  how  the  rest  of  the  tenants  are  .  ”  oh  yeah  ,  definitely  !  ”  she  nods  ,  head  turning  to  face  the  younger  woman  .  “  free  food  .  free  booze  .  a  chance  to  meet  the  rest  of  my  neighbors  .  what  more  can  you  ask  for  ?  ”  a  light  laugh  expels  past  her  lips  .  “  what  about  you  ?  or  are  you  just  here  for  the  free  food  ?  ”
