Been designing a posable bird wing made completely out of interlocking paper, no glue or tape! My goal is to make a bird lantern similar to my koi lantern :D
The only problem now is that my laser cutter broke due to some software update by Full Spectrum Laser and they are refusing to fix it 😭When I contacted their support, they just told me to buy a new one. As if I would ever buy another laser from such a shitty company.
Anyone has a recommendation for a better laser cutter from a reputable company?
I just heard a quote about motivation that really struck me "You have to learn to trust yourself" If you say you're going to do something you have to do it. If you don't follow through, you lose trust in yourself and you're less likely to do it the next time.
Executive Dysfunction is such a big part of ADHD that I realized I have no trust in myself to do the things I say I'm going to do. Even as I'm making the promise, in the back of my mind I know it's probably not going to happen.
The advice they gave to build that trust was to say you're going to do the thing as you're already doing it. Tell yourself "I'm going to take a shower" while you're already in the shower. Tell yourself you're going to get out of bed as you're standing up. Rebuild the trust with yourself to follow through on what you say you're going to do.
I've never thought about it that way before but the idea really resonated with me. Finding ways to trust yourself, to rebuild the belief in yourself that you can do something that you set your mind to - no matter how small it is.
hello! i saw that you sometimes give adhd tips. for me, summer is one of the worst time for adhd because i just do nothing all day, even when there's cool stuff i want to do, and then i feel bad for wasting time. any tips for helping manage this? any help is appreciated :)
Ohhh boy I can do what I can but I'll point out my ADHD-managing skills are FAR from perfect lol.
I didn't want this to be super long, so this is the summarized version of some stuff that works for me. If anyone wants more detail just ask!
1) Don't bother with the regular work cycle of wake-early sleep-early. If you, like me, work best from midnight to 4am, work from midnight to 4am.
2) SLEEP. Yeah I just said to work at weird late times if you work well at weird times but that doesn't mean stop sleeping. Rearrange your sleep schedule for when you want to be working. EG In the best case, I sleep twice during the day - once from 5am to 11am, and once from 8pm to 11pm, because my brain Does Not Like doing anything resembling thinking at these times lol so that's when I try to sleep.
3) Stop frEAKING planning stuff as if you're a neurotypical!!!! For real. You have ADHD, it's not going away, so plan stuff around that. Pick 2 or 3 things per day and stick to them (EG: 2 study subjects and 1 type of clothing for laundry.). I used to plan stuff like "oh I'll do a bajillion hours of studying followed by a run and then I'll clean my whoooole house" and then it would inevitably fail and I'd feel bad.
4) BIG WATER + FLAVOURED WATER. Forgetting to drink water is a big issue but also it affects everything from Awakeness^TM to mood to everything. Buying a big bottle of flavoured water every day can remind you to drink it. Big = harder to misplace/forget, Flavour = brain go :) instead of >:( I have @enby-life to thank for their post on flavoured water that inspired me to buy strawberry water and I am one high drayted human now lmao. I always buy the same 1.5l bottle of strawberry water and it helps a lot.
5) GO TO THERAPY. Yes it's scary yes it can be expensive yes it's WORTH IT WHEN YOU FIND THE RIGHT THERAPIST. (u can find a therapist in your country and specific area here: LINK)
6) Don't plan time for work. Plan stuff. Planning to do Xhrs on This subject and Yhrs on That subject never worked for me. Instead I'll plan something specific to do over the course of the day, and something that I can easily measure. EG: Not "do 2hrs of work on Magnetism, do laundry", but "make notes on 20 of the released Magnetism slides, wash dark t-shirts". Specific and easily-measured things on a plan make them easier to tick off and therefore better for making your brain go :).
I think I have a great analogy for adhd.
Okay, so:
When I was in middle school I did track for a year, and I always got yelled at by the coaches for not pacing myself and going too fast. And I’d just be like “what do you mean go slow? There’s no such thing??? I can’t go slow and still be running so slow = stop.” And so I’d keep running and I’d end up totally exhausting myself and coming in last place.
And I think that’s kind of how adhd works except no one can see how fast your brain is going so later when you end up all exhausted it just looks like you’re being lazy. Your brain doesn’t know how to pace itself and stuff so it ends up using all it’s got on the first half of the race and coming in last place in the end.
Does that make sense?
adhd friendly interview tips
hey y’all, i just answered a question in the adhd reddit about how to interview when u have adhd & maybe struggle with it, and then i thought maybe someone here would find it useful.
everyone is different + a lot of job hunting comes down to luck, but here r the steps that help me interview better.
-b4 the interview: do a lil stalking, take some notes on the company. the most important thing is finding the company’s MISSION (almost every company has one, i guarantee) and noting that down, ideally to reference in a cover letter or how you’re a good fit for it. make your nerves come across as passion for the company!
-once u have that info, google “most common interview questions” and rehearse your responses to these questions, maybe taking down notes as well (especially if you’re doing a virtual/phone interview). it doesn’t matter if u actually can recite the same answers u practiced in the real interview—being prepared for that question ahead of time will make it go smoother & there will be less floundering. especially ones like “what’s your biggest weakness” that can actually be a GREAT opportunity to impress if u think ahead
-i also recommend (esp for virtual interviews! HAVE a reference sheet in front of you if possible!) writing down a simple bulleted list of things (skills, experience, etc) u want to bring up/anecdotes you think show what you have to bring to the table, in case u need it & so it’s at the top of your head. good ones r examples of difficulties you’ve overcome, examples of good leadership, etc.
-make sure during the interview to write down any questions u have for the interviewer for the end of the interview, since they WILL ask & u need to have at least one. go tos: “what does day to day practical life look like at this job?” “what r (company’s) high priority goals this year & how will this position contribute to that?” “what should i expect for the rest of the hiring process to look like from here?”
-after the interview, SEND A THANK YOU EMAIL. within 24 hours preferably, at MOST 48. just google “job interview thank you note sample” and plug n chug, preferably adding at least 1 thing specific to ur interview. this makes a great impression, and also opens the line of communication for them to contact you back
i Just had to go thru all this for an interview so it’s fresh on the brain—AND they emailed me back for a 2nd interview the day after i sent my thank u, so clearly it worked at least a little! i know it’s easier said than done, but i find channelling my stressed/nervous energy into research and note-taking before the interview helps me feel more prepared, and therefore be at least a LITTLE more put-together. good luck! there’s a job out there for you :)

“executive dysfunction” (abrev. ED):
• a symptom of adhd that is used to describe a mental blockage in the specific area of the brain that controls everyday function and execution of neurologically-transmitted commands. this symptom presents itself in the form of a temporary psychological paralysis to the frontal lobe. ED is also defined as “short-circuiting” in the brain, specifically freezing the neurotransmitters that send out commands to your body to turn thoughts into actions. ED impairs the ability of the brain to easily execute the thought-to-action commands. this is thought to be a result of the dopamine deficiency inherent to adhd.
-> more facts: executive dysfunction can occur randomly and last for equally random periods of time; it is not a conscious decision & the area of the brain that could, theoretically, decide to “snap of out it” becomes partially paralyzed + unable to make executive commands (like decisions) at the time of the ED experience. while executive dysfunction externally looks like laziness, it is often described by adhd-ers as a constant and conscious mental war to find enough dopamine to get our executive command center unstuck. ED impairs various areas of life by turning everyday functions into large mental blockages that have no quick fix. while this is arguably the most difficult symptom of adhd to deal with, studies have found that it can be made somewhat more manageable by increasing intake of magnesium as well as omega-3 fatty acids to stimulate brain function.

Found this list online of easy food to eat if you are struggling and it helps me a lot so I thought I would share :)
This is why I get meal kits. Do I need them? No. Can I easily make them myself? For way cheaper? Yes. WILL I??? No.
Other tips: if you are going to buy things that aren’t pre-taxed, you need to make a habit of always doing the prep AS SOON AS YOU GET HOME. it will NEVER HAPPEN if you don’t.
Get the bulk pack of steaks! But you are never gonna eat them before they go bad. If you freeze them in individual ziplocks as soon as you unpack you probably will?
Get the celery, but you need to cut it ALL UP and store it in the fridge in water or it will rot.
And don’t do all tgese at once, get like, one or two prep things a trip. You aren’t gonna get it started if it’s a huge task.
Don’t pass by these tips because you don’t have ADHD!
These are valid points for the busy parent, the overstressed college student, and the person working the “wrong” shift.
Real story - I have thrown away SO MUCH meat and produce in my time. Frozen veggies can even be better than fresh, since they are picked when ripe and frozen rather than picked early and expected to ripen in shipping. My local grocer will sometimes pre-chop less-than-desirable veggies and sell them in the discount cooler - a chopped onion is more useful than a whole one! Meat in bulk packs is WAY cheaper, but you have to make breaking up that huge pack part of putting away the groceries. Also, having a place to put the groceries away helps make the process easier. It’s taken me more than one decade of life to figure these things out.
It’s not lazy if it is efficient. Professionals call it “time management.”

2022 Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize ICANVAS DIGITAL ART AWARD FINALIST: Anne Martwijit - “Threads of dreams” [Digital Painting & Drawing]
“I am fond of reading. I enjoy imagining and love transforming my internal experiences from those things into painting. When I was a child, I remember reading a book called ‘The Witches’. One of the characters in the book was a tiny little witch whose power was not at all tiny to the world of witches. She had the most powerful magic of all. As a tiny girl myself, while I was reading it, I was so inspired by this powerful little witch. I admired her power and strength, so much so that I decided from that point on that this would be my life mission. I wanted to grow up and be just like her! Fast forward to today, here I am using my creative power as my magic wand to inspire the world through the art with the stories of my witches, fairy tales, mysteries and magic.”

I believe this is an example of Sichuan musical theater, which is known for it’s skillful costume changes. It’s said that actors can change into completely different costumes on stage without the audience ever noticing. The technique is classified as a Chinese state secret.
