Herbs and Roots for Halloween
We switch from using fresh to dry herbs this time of year. These can be used for spellcasting during the Halloween season, tea making, kitchen witchery and seasoning holiday dishes, or incense and smoking...when appropriate research and percuations have been applied.
Rosemary: for memories, connecting to ancestors, protection from evil spirits and malice, buried with the dead
Mint: as an offering to the gods of the underworld, to mask the scent of decaying bodies, brings good fortune
Mugwort: for lucid dreaming, strengthens divination, seeing and invoking spirits
Hops: to preserve life, a key ingredient in witch’s brew, for sleep, working with dreams, uncovering hidden truths, a hypnotic, the wolf that strangles sheep
Yarrow: for ever lasting love even beyond the grave, ritual cleansing to heal emotional wounds like loss
Catnip: to attract black cats of course, invoking animal spirits, taps into altered states of mind
Sage: general cleansings and to rid of the undesired, calm grief and honor the dead, to find immortality, grants wishes
Mullein: ritually burned for Halloween and funerals, connecting to spirits, the witch’s torch
Cannabis: connecting to the unseen, thinning the veil, change in perception, higher consciousness and altered mind states, also the time when the flowers are (finally!) ready for smoking after drying and curing.

Roots connect us to the underworld and are often harvested in late autumn when plants send energy down into the earth for winter.
Valerian: invoke spirits, helps bring sleep like the earth resting this time of year, good to pair with catnip
Garlic: standard issue Halloween protection, garlic is also planted during the October new moon
Dandelion: aids in psychic vision, projection into the underworld, conjuring spirits
Burdock: protection against evil intentions, to purify haunted spaces, stability in the underworld
Turnip: the original jack-o’lantern, for working in the in-between, protection from trickster spirits and as an invitation for others
-🍄bonus🍄-
Autumn Mushrooms: (various species) connecting to the dead and dying, bridge between the underworld and the living, keepers of old knowledge
-from what I have readily available in my apothecary, feel free to add to the list!-
