Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters (1985)

Rodger Ebert deemed this move “the most unconventional bioptic [he’s] ever seen, and one of the best.” Based loosely on the life of writer, actor, military leader, samurai, and icon Yukio Mishima. His life is told through the stories that he had written over his lifetime; Temple of the Golden Pavillon, Kyoko’s House, And Runaway Horses. Each of the stories have a personal aspect of Mishima within them, the bioptic is then weaved through fiction and fact. Surreal landscapes reminiscent of Shigeo Fukuda, riffed with the music of Philip Glass creates a deeply emotional drama of one mans life.
